(Early golf) Thomas Mathison The Goff. An Heroi-Comical Poem. In three Cantos...With an appendix, Containing Two Poems in Praise of Goff, and a Few Notes and Illustrations Third edition, though described as the second on the title page, it was enlarged by a dedication 'To all the lovers of Goff in Europe, Asia, Africa and America', and by two short poems, later blue half calf rubbed to extremities, marbled endpapers with the ex libris label for Samuel Chick (a copy of William Faques the first printer to the king, 1504) and booksellers label for Henry Sotheran & Co to front pastedown, some light staining to the head of the title page, pp.32 runs true, pp.22, 23 and 25 previously dog eared, a very good copy, scarce, Printed for Peter Hill, Edinburgh, 1793.One of the cornerstones of golfing literature, the third edition of the first printed book devoted entirely to golf, is Thomas Mathison's "The Goff." Born in Edinburgh in 1721 and trained as a legal writer, Mathison first published this work in 1743. The poem humorously depicts a game of golf played on Leith Links and provides significant insights into how golf was played at that time, including details on the equipment used and the layout of the course. It also mentions prominent golfers of the era, referred to as the 'Caledonian Chiefs,' who were regulars at Leith Links. These players, drawn from Edinburgh's professional elite, were the founding members of the first golf club, the Company of Gentlemen Golfers.Peter Hill, the publisher, typically printed in the hundreds rather than thousands. This scarce volume, with WorldCat listing only seven editions in eleven libraries worldwide and none in the British Library, is in remarkable condition. The slightly later binding, bearing the label of the esteemed Henry Sotheran & Co booksellers, further attests to its distinguished provenance. The identity of Samuel Chick, as noted on the ex libris label, remains a mystery. An important work, rarely sold on the open market.
