JOSEPH CHARLES BARROW (d.1802) MOONLIT LANDSCAPE WITH FIGURES BY A FIRE, JAMAICA Signed and dated 1789, watercolour with pen and ink, original washline borders, unframed Image 28.5 x 39cm; sheet 35.5 x 46.5cm. * Barrow is thought not to have travelled to the West Indies but he was retained (like Edward Dayes, Thomas Girtin and Thomas Hearne) to develop studies made by other artists who had travelled abroad. James Moore was one of Barrow's patrons who employed him for this purpose. Barrow was elected FSA in 1790, and he taught John Varley in his active studio, with whom he went on sketching tours in Britain. Sadly, Barrow incurred debts and died penniless. His drawings are rare but examples may be found in the Victoria & Albert and British Museums. Another view in Jamaica by Barrow, also dated 1789, was sold at Christies London on May 8th 2003, lot 229 ++ Surface slight rubbed in centre and upper left; needs a light clean

(1748-1818) Quarter length, wearing a military tunic and sash, signed with initials and inscribed: J S/ 1791/ Madras, pencil on paper, unframed Oval 13.5 x 12cm. * Floyd was put in command of the 23rd (19th) Light Dragoons in Madras in 1781 and distinguished himself against Tipu Sultan 1790-1794. He was promoted Major General in 1794 and led the covering army during the Siege of Seringapatam in 1799. Exhibited: Glasgow, Royal Institute of Fine Arts * A view from Charlotte Cottage, above Lamorna Cove, where the Simpsons lived from the late 1920s. The house had been built by William Matthews Duncan as his retirement home and the house was very close to the home of his friend, Samuel John Lamorna Birch. The house became known as "Duncan's" despite the Simpsons' residency. This picture was painted in about 1932 and remained in the artist's collection after they moved to their subsequent home in Penzance. It was sold by the artist's daughter, Leonora, in 1999. ++ Needs a light clean
