KING CREOLEOne-Sheet (27" x 41"); From the Collection of Bass Guitarist, Jason Newsted FramedVery Fine Paramount, 1958After achieving great initial success as a singer and on-stage performer, Elvis followed in the footsteps of his role models, James Dean and Marlon Brando, and went on to become a significant film actor. With hits both before and after leaving the army, Elvis created a slew of well-known romantic musicals and popcorn flicks that are well-remembered. From the Collection of Jason Newsted, a huge Elvis fan and the former bassist of the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Fame heavy metal band Metallica. Note this poster is inside a framed shadow box, meaning an exact grade is not available. Condition and grade are based on a visual look at the front of each poster. ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLEJapanese STB (20" x 58")Very Fine Folded Toho, 1963Offered here is a rare country-of-origin STB poster ("Standing Board poster," sometimes called tatekan or tatsumi posters and made from two overlapping 29" x 20" B2 sheets, resulting in an image 58" in height) from the film's original release, prominently featuring a "Mushroom Person" and members of the cast. Original release posters from popular Japanese films are always in high demand, Matango especially so as it never received an American theatrical release. This very clean and bright STB in two parts has only light fold and cross-fold wear and two very faint vertical creases in the lower half of the top portion that can only be seen at close inspection. Best known as the director of Gojira (aka Godzilla, 1954), the movie that inaugurated the dai kaiju genre in Japan, Ishiro Honda also helmed a number of solid, stylish science fiction films that didn't feature giant monsters. The most intriguing - and disturbing - of these was Matango (1963) released on American television as The Attack of the Mushroom People, and perhaps best summarized as "Gilligan's Island remade as a horror film." This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. THE GAME THAT KILLSOne Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- on Linen Columbia, 1937Paper from this title is extremely scarce, as it is prized by Hayworth devotees, poster aficionados, and hockey fans alike. The dramatic poster offered here, with its scene of mayhem in the rink, features a beautiful image of Hayworth in the lower right, along with Quigley, with whom she made five pictures at Columbia, of which this is the fourth. A poster with some light touchups to fold lines and cross folds. Still evident are a few small minor chips at the end of two horizontal folds in the border and corner pinholes. The artwork is relatively untouched and as such displays very well. It's murder on ice in this hockey mystery film when Tom Ferguson (Ward Bond) is killed during an in-game "accident," leading his brother Alec (Charles Quigley) to join the team to investigate the matter. This was one of the first films in which Rita Hayworth used her now-familiar stage name, as her real name, Rita Cansino, was considered too "exotic." Columbia Studio head Harry Cohn, who had just signed the actress to a seven-year contract, thought that the name, and the "Mediterranean" image that went with it, would limit her choice of roles. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE40" x 60"; Style DFine+ Rolled; Artist Drew Struzan & Charles White III 20th Century Fox, 1977This large format poster with a good image has general crimping, creasing, edge wear with tiny tears, smudging in the borders, and some slight tanning in the upper border. There is also some sporadic tape residue with some light surface paper lifts in the center area. George Lucas' ground-breaking space opera, which defied all expectations to change the film industry forever. Inspired by Flash Gordon serials, Westerns, samurai films and World War II movies, Lucas crafted a new, hugely popular mythology in "A galaxy far, far away," while setting a new standard for visual effects. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. LA TRAITES DES BLANCHES BY JEAN-LOUIE DEBUT DE LA FORESTFrench Newspaper Grande (47" x 73")Fine- on European Linen; Artist Theophile Alexandre Steinlen Le Journal, 1899This poster on European linen with an overall appearance that is largely undiminished has had some touch-ups to previous fold wear and separations, pinholes, chipping, as well as tears to the interior. There is some paper loss in the lower vertical folds and in between the words "Le" and "Journal" in the upper left. There is also an ink stamp in the lower left, some general color softening and the linen has been trimmed into the border by approximately 1" vertically and horizontally, extending slightly into the upper printing. This intriguing poster from 1899, with Art Nouveau-inspired design by Theophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859-1923), promotes Le Journal, a Paris daily newspaper published from 1892-1944. This issue is particularly infamous as it covers a chapter of author Dubut de Laforest's novel La Traite des Blanches (The White Slave Trade), a fictionalized account of an actual incident that occurred in 1880 when it was revealed that some 50 foreign - and underage - girls were taken captive and forced to work as prostitutes in the brothels of Brussels. The case drew international attention, especially when it came to light that some of those involved in the affair were members of the local police force. Steinlen's image, which brings to mind the iconic poster art of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, captures a scene from the novel inside one of the brothels as the house manager looks on derisively as three desperate girls are forced to endure their captivity and abuse. Among those who appreciate posters from this period, Steinlen's work is considered especially collectible, so make sure you don't overlook this rare beauty, as it deserves a special place in your collection. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
SUNSET BOULEVARDOne-Sheet (29" x 43.5")Fine+ on Linen Mercurio Films S.A., 1951This poster on linen has had light touch-ups to all the fold lines, to the two lower cross-fold center points, lower center vertical, and around the word UNA. Evident still are scattered sporadic pinholes in the borders and slightly inside the image, tiny tears, especially on the lower edge, and a tear in the upper left border. Named after the central street that has been associated with film production since 1911 and runs through the heart of Tinseltown, Billy Wilder's entertaining film combination of noir, black comedy, and character study is considered one of the greatest movies about Hollywood. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
SCANNERSOne Sheets (2) (27" X 41"); Regular and AdvanceVery Fine+ Folded; Artist Joanne Daley (Regular) Avco Embassy, 1981This lot features an exceptional teaser poster (note the "Advance Teaser" notation in the bottom right) for this fan-favorite film, far more subtle and compelling than the graphic one sheet issued for the general release. Both posters are in presentable condition and have minor scattered crimping and some fold wear. The advance poster has a faint two-inch scratch in the lower left panel and the regular poster has some light wear to the lower two panels. In 1981, Canadian auteur David Cronenberg added to his then-brief catalog of "body horror" films with the release of Scanners, about a group of psychics with mighty telekinetic and telepathic powers, powers that can be used to deadly effect (hence the tagline, "Their thoughts can kill") and the large corporation that wants to use them as weapons. Rushed into production without a finished script - Cronenberg wrote individual scenes for the film instead of a traditional narrative - the film eventually required nine months of editing and reshooting, becoming "the longest post-production of any film I've ever done," according to the director. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
TERROR FROM THE YEAR 5000One-Sheet (27" x 41")Fine+ on Linen; Artist Albert Kallis AIP, 1958The film itself is fun and engaging, but the one sheet promoting it is an absolute classic, with a great image of the future woman plunging through a time portal in a striking image by well-known poster artist Albert Kallis. A poster with scattered touch-ups to extra fold lines on the upper and lower horizontal lines, some slight paper loss in the lower left in the credits as well as the lower center point cross fold. There is also some light sporadic staining in the borders, but the images themselves here are bright and very presentable. If science fiction films have taught us nothing else, they've taught us that messing with time travel is always bad. Professor Howard Erling (Frederic Downs) has failed to heed that sage advice as he constructs a functional time machine that allows him to trade objects with the future. However, he goes too far like all scientists in movies like this. Eventually, he retrieves a female killer (Salome Jens, whose name does not appear on any promotional material) from the distant future. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
WESTWORLDOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- Folded; Artist Neal Adams MGM , 1973The one sheet offered here is the artwork by famed comic book illustrator Neal Adams, showing Brynner's Gunslinger revealed as a mechanical creation.A clean and bright poster with some minor fold wear including slight separation on the lower fold end, general light scattered creasing, and staple marks in the borders with one In the center and a little pull in the upper right. In 1973, audiences were treated to the new science-fiction Western spectacular Westworld, about an advanced interactive amusement park where the android characters all start to malfunction, with dangerous and murderous results. Written and helmed by first-time director Michael Crichton (whose book, Jurassic Park, would become a franchise-maker in 1990), and starring Yul Brynner, Richard Benjamin, and James Brolin. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONEOne-Sheets (2) (27" x 40"); Advance & RegularNear Mint Rolled; Artist Page Wood (Advance) & Drew Struzan (Regular) Warner Bros., 2001The advance poster has only some minor wear on the lower edge and a few light sporadic crimps, and the regular poster is mint. One of the most astounding media successes of the current century has been the explosion of the Harry Potter franchise. Based on the books by author J.K. Rowling, "Pottermania" has slipped into virtually every corner of the popular culture universe, inspiring stage productions, video games, spin-off series, toys, clothing, and even theme parks. While the books were the starting point, the series of seven movies kicked the Potter franchise into high gear, starting with the film represented right here, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, John Cleese, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick David, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, and Maggie Smith. Grossing more than $1 billion at the box office, the film smashed records worldwide, gaining widespread critical and audience acclaim, and paved the way for sequels. KANSAS CITY BOMBERLife Magazine One-Sheet (26.75" x 40.25")Fine+ on Linen MGM, 1972On the June 2, 1972 issue, Life Magazine featured the fetching Raquel Welch as the cover girl to which MGM decided to release this unique special poster as a promotional tie-in for the film Kansas City Bomber. This poster on linen has had some touch-up work done to the fold lines, especially the upper vertical and horizontal lines. Plus, there is some light smudging in the top right, the right side edge, and the lower right edge. Other than some scattered creases, the poster is very clean.Centering around the then-popular 70s league sports entertainment Roller Games, iconic actress Raquel Welch plays a tough single mother and kick-ass roller derby queen. TOUCH OF EVILOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine+ on Linen; Artist Robert Tollen Universal International, 1958Considered by some to be one of the last in the classic cycle of film noirs, this one-sheet for Touch Of Evil via artist Bob Tollen visually displays all the dramatic notables that make the film such a provocative and historic Orson Welles original. It is a very clean poster that has been linen-backed without restoration and has only pinholes in the corners, and light fold wear is evident.Masterful film noir from Orson Welles, starring Charlton Heston as a Mexican narcotics officer investigating a car bombing on the Mexican-US border. Welles - also appearing as a corrupt US police captain - infamously fought the studio, Universal, to realize his vision for the film, which was heavily re-edited against his will. Welles' preferred edit was not assembled and released until 1998.This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. There is also a faint blue stain on the lower left border and a light blue number stamp in the lower right corner. Clint Eastwood stars in and directs this semi-supernatural Western, in which Eastwood plays a gun-toting stranger who turns up in the corrupt town of Lago with a vengeance on his mind. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. RESERVOIR DOGSOne-Sheet (27" x 40")Very Fine+ Rolled Miramax, 1992This one-sheet for Reservoir Dogs has it all and is memorable for many reasons. A barren yet ultra-cool and clean style, criminal character colors Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen), Mr. White (Harvey Keitel), Mr. Orange (Tim Roth), Mr. Pink (Steve Buscemi), and Nice Guy Eddie (Chris Penn) in chic black silhouette and an off-kilter display that announces the arrival of a new auteur.A rolled poster in terrific condition with only minor light sporadic edgewear and a pin-size chip out of the lower edge. Otherwise, this is an immaculate example of this poster. Quentin Tarantino made his directorial debut with "Reservoir Dogs," a gripping, humorous, and intense portrayal of a failed jewel heist. The film stars Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, Steve Buscemi, and Michael Madsen, and pays homage to classic crime films such as "The Killing," "Kansas City Confidential," and "City on Fire."This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. STARSHIP TROOPERSJapanese B0 & One-Sheet (57.5" x 40" & 27" x 40")Very Fine Rolled Buena Vista International/Tri-Star, 1997A terrific Japanese B0 featuring Michael Ironside's POV of the bug invasion, not to mention five very iconic image squares in the lower area, and it's matched here with the iconic one-sheet.Both posters are clean and bright and have only light general crimping. The Japanese B0 also has some sporadic edge wear, including creasing, crimping, and tiny tears.RoboCop Director Paul Verhoeven once again brought a satirical edge to sci-fi with this interplanetary war movie based on the novel by Robert A. Heinlein. While following the fortunes of a group of fresh-faced teens in a war against arachnid-like aliens, the film skewered fascism and pro-war propaganda - though its subtleties were sadly lost on many critics and audiences at the time of release. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. COMMANDOOne-Sheet (27: x 41"); Let's Party StyleVery Fine Folded 20th Century Fox, 1985Offered here is the "Let's Party" style one sheet from Commando, featuring a great image of a buff and steely-eyed Schwarzenegger as well as one of his iconic lines from the film. Many feel that this is the more desirable style for this sheet, as the other features the same artwork, but bears the somewhat generic tagline "Somewhere, somehow, someone's going to pay" instead of the line most associated with Schwarzenegger's character in this film. A folded poster in good condition, with only light general crimping and creasing, with some slight scuffing in the upper left and right in the black background. Few names in the pantheon of action movie heroes stand as tall or as proud as Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former Mr. Universe and two-term governor of California. His breakthrough role came in 1980 when he portrayed Robert E. Howard's famous barbarian hero in "Conan" and its sequel "Conan the Destroyer" (1984). With the release of James Cameron's "The Terminator" (1984), Schwarzenegger's star power was undeniable. "Commando", which followed in 1985, capitalized on his superstardom as he played Special Forces Colonel John Matrix, who must rescue his young daughter Jenny (Alyssa Milano) from a band of mercenaries who hold a grudge against Matrix from a previous operation. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. MAGNUM FORCEDie-Cut Mobile (DS) (34" x 15")Very Fine- Warner Bros., 1973This hardly ever-seen kick-ass die-cut mobile promoting Magnum Force features Clint Eastwood in full Dirty Harry mode, pointing a very large Magnum .44.This double-sided mobile has some light-age wear, including minor crimps, surface scuffs, and slight scratches, but the artwork itself still presents well. There is a tear at Eastwood's wrist which is being reinforced by tape, but the rest of the piece is very much intact. The sequel to Dirty Harry, with a script by John Milius and Michael Cimino, pits detective Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood) against a group of rogue cops, who are even more extreme in their methods than he is.This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. THE ANGRY RED PLANETThree Sheet (41" x 79")Very Fine Folded American International, 1960Released at the height of the "red" scare and basked in a scarlet background, this one-sheet for The Angry Red Planet is most recognized for the depiction of the composite bat, rat, and crab-like alien creature that dominates the poster.A presentable and very clean three sheet in two parts with light sporadic fold line wear, including some extra folds. Plus, both are rolled and very clean. Both of these posters are super clean with only minor sporadic edge wear, a few light crimps, and a soft corner in the upper right of the one-sheet.Paul Verhoeven's ultraviolent sci-fi satire stars Peter Weller as a police officer in near-future Detroit, who is brutally murdered, then resurrected as a cybernetic law enforcer. LIFEBOATOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Fine+ on Linen 20th Century Fox, 1944Posters for acclaimed director Alfred Hitchcock are becoming more scarce, and this is an early one from his American career. This excellent stone litho poster gives us a glimpse of most of the cast, including Tallulah Bankhead, William Bendix, Walter Slezak, Mary Anderson, Henry Hull, Heather Angel, John Hodiak, and more. This poster on linen has had some touch-ups to fix previous issues, including wear, light separation, and some paper loss to the fold lines and cross folds. There have also been sporadic touch-ups to other areas, including the four corners, but the images themselves are very presentable.Although Lifeboat was based on John Steinbeck's novel, the author chose to disassociate himself from the film because of its treatment of his material. Nevertheless, the picture is one of Alfred Hitchcock's most innovative films, which takes place almost entirely on a small lifeboat that carries the survivors of a torpedoed freighter during WWII.This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORYOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Near Mint Folded Paramount, 1971With only typical light general edge and fold wear, this folded poster is in near-mint condition. Based on the classic book by Roald Dahl, this film tells the story of Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum), a poor child who wins an opportunity to tour the magical candy factory of the mysterious Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) when he finds a Golden Ticket inside a Wonka Bar. Although the film received generally positive reviews (Roger Ebert compared it favorably to The Wizard of Oz [1939]), it underperformed at the box office. Only after the movie began appearing on television did it become a true cult classic and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2014. THE CRAZIES, DAWN OF THE DEAD, DAY OF THE DEADOne Sheets (3) (27" X 41)Very Fine+ Folded; Artist Lanny Powers (Dawn of the Dead) Cambist Films & United Film Distribution, 1973 & 1978 & 1985George Romero revolutionized the zombie genre with his groundbreaking apocalyptic classic, Night of the Living Dead (1968). But his contribution to horror cinema didn't stop there, as can be seen in the trio of posters offered here. The Crazies poster has minor wear including slight separation of the lower cross fold and border wear including chipping, and two tiny tears, plus scattered crimping and light creases. Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead are extremely clean, with only faint handling and fold wear. The Crazies (1973), about a biohazard that causes an outbreak of homicidal madness in a small town and the resulting military takeover, is one of the best films from his early period following Night. A victim of poor distribution and the resulting meager box office performance, the film has developed a dedicated cult following in the years since. Dawn of the Dead (1978) was Romero's long-planned follow-up to Night, and set the zombie outbreak in Pennsylvania's Monroeville Mall, likening the unrelenting craving for human flesh that the reanimated corpses display to America's rampant materialism/consumerism. The film was so popular that it spawned a quartet of sequels, the first of which was the unrated Day of the Dead (1985), about a group that has survived a zombie apocalypse by sheltering in an underground bunker in Florida. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Both items are from the Tim Matheson Collection and are autographed personally by Tim with his character "Otter" added underneath in silver sharpie. Both the hoodie and t-shirt are in good condition with only a light bit of typical age fading. There is some stitching coming out from the corners of the front pockets of the hoodie that can be repaired quite easily. There are no defects nor fraying of the collar, sleeves, or bottom, and both the images and autographs display well.As well as being the first film produced by the popular humor magazine National Lampoon, John Landis' college campus comedy Animal House also launched the big-screen career of Saturday Night Live star John Belushi. Also, its unashamedly low-brow laughs effectively gave birth to the gross-out subgenre. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. Infamously, Monroe and Olivier clashed during the difficult production, which was depicted in the 2011 British film My Week with Marilyn. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. THE INVISIBLE RAYFrench Grande (44.5" x 61")Very Fine on Linen; Artist Boris Grinsson Universal, 1936The French Grande offered here presents a striking image of Karloff, complete with glowing hands and an expression of glowering menace against an atmospheric orange and black background, an image that is in every way superior to the American release imagery. Universal Monster paper has always been highly desirable, and the material from this title has proven exceptionally elusive. Boris Grinsson creates a spectacular image of Bris Karloff in his role as Dr. Janos Ruhk. This is the only example of this poster we are aware of selling in recent years. Prior to restoration, this poster had only minor fold and cross-fold wear, pinholes in the borders, and some light paper splits within the image. There is a small dot on Karloff's nose that has been touched up, but otherwise, this is a very clean and desirable example of this poster. In 1936, there were two undisputed Kings of Horror in Hollywood: Bela Lugosi, who had starred in Dracula (1931), and Boris Karloff, who played the Monster in Frankenstein (1931). It's not surprising, then, that Universal Pictures would eventually team these two cinematic titans. The Invisible Ray (1936), is about a scientist (Karloff) who finds a strange meteor made of an unknown element dubbed "Radium X," whose emanations cause him first to glow in the dark and then proceed to drive him slowly mad. The film is particularly notable for being the last of the Universal Monster films to be released under the studio's original regime, marking the end of an important era. THE MAZEOne-Sheet (27" x 41"); 3-D StyleVery Fine on Linen Allied Artists, 1953This linen-backed poster is very clean, with only some touch-ups to light fold line wear and some imperceptible residue and faint border airbrushing from what appears to have possibly been a snipe over the 3Dimension tag.The Maze is a movie set in a castle in the Scottish Highlands, where mysterious and horrifying events take place. The film is a chilling and eerie 3-D tall tale, and it is noteworthy that this was the final feature of the filmmaker William Cameron Menzies, who was known for his "dimensional" style as a production designer and director. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEINInsert (14" x 36")Very Fine- Folded Universal International, 1948This folded insert represents what some consider to be one of the best formats created for this classic Universal horror/comedy crossover. The first movie to team the '40s double act Bud Abbott and Lou Costello with Universal's monsters - in this case, Dracula (Bela Lugosi), the Wolf Man (Lon Chaney Jr.), and Frankenstein's Monster (Glenn Strange). It proved a huge hit, and four more monster crossover films followed. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. SUNSET BOULEVARDOne-Sheet (27" x 41"); Style AFine+ on Linen Paramount, 1950Most of the poster formats for this film share the same graphics, as it's hard to top the image of a seething, maniacal Swanson casting a scorching glare upon young lovers Holden and Nancy Olson. The style B one sheet is much less impressive as it is merely a logo without actors. This poster has been restored to fix previous issues including fold line wear, chipping, and some tearing. There is also some light airbrushing in the upper center face image. Now, on linen, this one-sheet displays wonderfully."All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up." Gloria Swanson showed true professionalism when she took on the role of aging actress Norma Desmond in this sensational and dark look at Hollywood. Billy Wilder directed this nightmarish film noir thriller and it became one of the absolutely timeless classics. Erich von Stroheim and William Holden (as Joe Gillis) co-star, but it was Swanson's show and comeback vehicle. The film was nominated for 11 Oscars and took three: Best Art Direction, Score, and Screenplay. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace.
