Lot 2079

Mauritius, 1859 'Post Paid' 2d blue, intermediate state of the plate, SG.38 (cat.£1,400). Very attractive used example with light cancel in UR corner well clear of the profile, nice even margins on upper three sides, lower margin slightly into frame at LR corner. Absolutely sound and free of repairs, a very clean stamp. Accompanied by 1977 R.P.S. certificate.

Tristan da Cunha, specialised collection of stamps and postal history beautifully presented and written-up in ink in three albums, starting with several 1920s/'30s covers showing early Tristan postmark types, incl. on 1/2d KEVII franking to London, KGV three-colour philatelic franking all with control numbers, KGVI incl. RMS Carinthia cover, etc. Then the stamps incl. 1952 first set MNH, QEII first set MNH and to 4d on Gough Island survey cover, all following QEII sets complete MNH, as well as booklets from 1958, air letters, traffic light/plate number gutter pairs, 1983 high value wmk varieties, etc. Bonuses: Two brand-new SG Devon albums with leaves and a postcard album of commemorative usages mainly rail and navy interest.

This and the following 7 lots are from a fantastic estate, the core in Windsor albums with many extra pages inserted for varieties and especially postmarks and covers, the whole intact as received with no items separated, since it came in at the last minute. The first volume of the collection, packed with stamps and postal history from QV to early KGV, starting with two used Mulready envelopes, fourteen penny blacks incl. on cover (four margins, light red MX), 4x 1840 2d blues only one without full margins, a plethora of 1d red imperfs incl. mint example on blued paper and several different black plates used incl. huge margins plate 5 on cover 1/7/41 Leith to Hull, 2d lines superb margins shades and unusual cancels incl. '12' in cross, etc. The perf line-engraved very well-represented too, with red plates complete to 224, 1869 2d blue inverted wmk, etc, followed by surface-printed with quite comprehensive shades and plates to 5/- (1874 plate 2), some superb cds examples, 1856 1/- green wmk inverted, 1883/4 10/- ultramarine shades, the later QV with mint control blocks, jubilees complete mint and cds used in pmk study with many 1/- values, etc. The KEVII also very strong with apparently all DLR shades etc complete to 1/- mint and only a handful of empty spaces on Harrison printings varieties mint to 1/-, also used to £1 green, as well as controls mint and used, interesting postmark studies, perfin studies, etc. Similar depth lastly on KGV with impressive showing of Downey varieties mint and used, controls, postal history with scarce flight covers, etc. A great collection.

Lot 2128

Great Britain line-engraved collection, in a Safe hingeless album with 1840 1d grey-black (D-B), margins nearly all round and sound, 1840 2d blue margins right around except LR corner and in at top, other small faults yet good clean colour and light cancel. Excepting absence of the 1½d, the collection then has no spaces save red plates 77 and 225 and 1/2d plate 9. The collector has achieved very reasonable quality overall on the 1d red plates. An additional stockbook holds dozens more 1d red imperfs, hundreds of 1d red 'stars' categorised incl. inverted wmk (small faults) and lots of further plates incl. over thirty pl.207 for reconstruction, and ½d page. A good range of the line-engraved period.

Great Britain and Channel Islands smorgasbord in 4 cartons, of which 2 cartons are new issues to 2018, 1 carton PHQ cards and 1 carton of cinderella, cigarette cards, matchbook cards, railway related material, etc. The face value on the GB alone will exceed £2,400, with stockbooks of sets in gutter pairs and traffic light blocks of six, sheetlets/booklet panes, presentation packs, christmas stamp booklets, impressive showing of booklets from pre-decimal to 2000s prestige with light duplication even on high value booklets, as well as aerogrammes, postal orders, etc. The Channel Islands look similarly comprehensive incl. prestige booklets, even some Eire 2000s € face value. The albums have been subject to dusty storage but this has not affected the contents.

Great Britain, surface-printed group of 12 stamps, 1873 to 1887 issues used, generally neat bar cancels on the earlier, then 1884 6d green cds, 9d jubilee superb, as well as the 4 1/2d with scarce deep bright carmine shade (SG.206a, cat.£650), neat reg. postmark and very light blue crayon stroke, with normal for comparison. Total cat.£1,800+.

Lot 2175

Great Britain, 1911 Downey Head ½d green shades, Die 1a yellow-green and bluish green, SGspec.N1(4) and N1(5), both in fresh mint horizontal blocks of six (with normal green shade for comparison). The yellow-green block has UR stamp hinged, otherwise MNH, the key bluish green block MNH (cat. £2,400 for hinged), couple of inconsequential very light gum bends barely visible from the reverse only and mentioned for the sake of accuracy. Extremely attractive quality with strong colours, scarce this nice. Total catalogue as hinged singles £2,660.

Great Britain, beautiful black and white George VI Post Office Letter Box plate, enamelled steel, a few light and evocative signs of use/wear to the sides of the entrance and small area of chipped enamel on left edge (incidentally revealing how the enamel was bonded to the metal). No doubt a scarce collateral item of KGVI postal history, of considerable charm and small enough for framing in an exhibit.

Has been worn, so has very light signs of use when you look carefully. Inside the movement looks clean. The dial is pitted and has a fine line of wear/dirt around the outer edge. Slightly marked where it has been opened in the past as the case is made of soft metal.
