LOUIS NAPOLEON: (1856-1879) Prince Imperial, the son of Emperor Napoleon III. The Prince fought in the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and, whilst serving with the British forces, was killed in a skirmish with a group of Zulus. An extremely rare A.L.S., Napoleon, two pages, 8vo, Camden Place, Chislehurst, n.d., to a Countess, in French. Louis Napoleon writes, in full, 'I have just received with real joy the message in which you show me that you haven't forgotten about me, despite my lengthy absence. I accept your invitation with the greatest willingness and I beg you to accept, Madam and dear Countess, my best wishes'. With blank integral leaf. EARDLEY GEORGE: (1912-1991) English Company Sergeant-Major, Victoria Cross winner for his actions east of Overloon in the Netherlands on 16th October 1944 during World War II. A.L.S., George H. Eardley VC MM, one page, 4to, Wistaston, near Crewe, 2nd January 1968, to a Headmaster. Eardley states that he has recently received a letter from the headquarters of the Light Infantry Volunteers informing him 'that the scholars of your school have decided to carry out a project entitled “The British Army” and that their efforts should have every encouragement' and continues 'When I originally joined the army in 1940 it was at Stoughton Barracks, Guildford, with the Queens Royal Regt, and it was there that I was given my first step to promotion…..Later, during the last war, I was transferred to the Shropshire Light Infantry, and went to Europe and the Far East with them' before concluding 'I wish the scholars of your school every success in their endeavours, and I feel sure the rewards for their efforts will no doubt amply repay them in the years to come'. GORDON CHARLES GEORGE: (1833-1885) British Army officer and administrator, known as Chinese Gordon. A.L.S., C G Gordon, three pages, 8vo, Harpersfield, Lanark, 8th October 1868, to Newsome. Gordon informs his correspondent 'On receipt of your letter containing W[ar] O[ffice] query & supposing you would go to town on Monday I wrote my answer to you at that Temple of Wisdom and I am afraid you missed it', adding that 'it contained my official answer to Jervis open for your perusal with a private note to him & a ditto to you' and that he had followed it up with another private note to Jervis 'recommending the glacis of the forts to be made at same time as they were weighted'. Gordon further outlines his upcoming travel arrangements and suggests meeting Newsome at Suffolk Street, reflecting 'It seems to me 14 or 15 years since I left Gravesend, time hangs so in the country and for my life I dare not give away a trait' and concludes by remarking that he expects to receive a long letter containing the interview with Jervis before long, although if it is not yet written to not mind and wait until until Friday 'when we will get it over in a minute, and go to the W.O. together'. EINSTEIN ALBERT: (1879-1955) German-born Theoretical Physicist, Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1921. Vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph, the image lightly affixed at the corners to a card mount by a discerning collector (as opposed to a studio photographer) and depicting Einstein in a head and shoulders pose with his hands clasped beneath his chin. The image is taken from a vintage print of a photograph by Yousuf Karsh in 1948. Signed ('A. Einstein') by Einstein in black fountain pen ink to the lower mount and dated 1955 in his hand. A note in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the photograph was signed at Princeton, New Jersey. Some light staining and minor corner creasing to the mount, otherwise about VG  The present photograph was signed by Einstein in the last months of his life; he passed away at Princeton Hospital on 18th April 1955 having refused surgery and declaring, 'I want to go when I want. It is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share; it is time to go. I will do it elegantly.'

ROBINSON JOHN: (1839-1903) British Journalist, the first Prime Minister of the Colony of Natal 1893-97. L.S., John Robinson, as Prime Minister, five pages, folio, Natal, 10th November 1893, to Walter Peace, on the printed stationery of the Colonial Secretary's Office. Robinson informs his correspondent that the Governor, on the advice of the Executive Council, has appointed him to be the Agent General for Natal in London with a salary of £1000 per annum and an allowance of £600 per annum for office expenses and further states 'It is a condition of this appointment that you are to perform, without further charge against this Government, the whole of the public work of this Colony in England and Europe', also adding that a Committee of Advice will also be set up in London and that 'With regard to the matter of the security to be furnished by you, to the selection of a Bank to do the business of the Colony in England, and to other matters connected with this appointment, a further communication will be addressed to you'. D.S., North, one page, folio, Whitehall Treasury Chambers, 4th May 1774. The manuscript document is a warrant addressed to the Commissioners of His Majesty's Customs in Scotland and approves the application of Edward Burrow, Collector of the Customs at Port Glasgow, to be absent from his duty for six months in order to attend to his private affairs. Signed by North at the foot and countersigned by Charles Townshend (1728-1810) British Politician, Lord of the Treasury 1770-77 and Charles Cornwall (1735-1789) British Politician, Lord of the Treasury and Speaker of the House of Commons 1780-89. Vintage signed official Christmas greetings card, the cream small 4to stiff folding card featuring a colour illustration of a map of the Gold Coast to the inside. O'CONNOR LUKE: (1831-1915) Irish Major General, the first soldier to receive the Victoria Cross, awarded for his actions at the Battle of the Alma on 20th September 1854 during the Crimean war. Dark ink signature ('Luke O'Connor, Major General') and two additional words and the date 27th April 1905 in his hand on a piece evidently removed from the conclusion of a letter. A small, neat tear to the left edge has been repaired with tape to the verso, causing a little light staining which slightly affects the signature, G

WRIGHT FRANK LLOYD: (1867-1959) American Architect and Interior Designer. D.S., Frank Lloyd Wright, being a signed cheque, Taliesin, Spring Green, Wisconsin, 6th August 1947. The attractive partially printed document, completed entirely in Wright's hand and signed in his capacity as President of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, is drawn on the Farmers State Bank in Wisconsin and is made payable to Stereoscopic Cameras Inc. for the sum of $55.09. With various bank cancellations at the centre, one of which only very lightly affects Wright's signature. Some light staining and minor age wear to the upper edge. About VG Wright made many photographs of his drawings and his archive contains over 40,000 photographs.

ROCKINGHAM MARQUESS OF: (1730-1782) British Prime Minister 1765-66, March - July 1782. An extremely rare, very fine D.S., Rockingham, at the foot, one page (vellum), large oblong folio, n.p., 1st September 1761. The attractive manuscript document is issued by the Marquess of Rockingham in his capacity as Lord Lieutenant of the West Riding of the County of York and is addressed to Paul Meyer, appointing him to be a Major of a Battalion of Militia raised within the West Riding and lately commanded by Henry, Lord Viscount Downe. With a good red wax seal affixed alongside Rockingham's signature. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise a clean example. About EX Henry Dawnay (1727-1760) 3rd Viscount Downe. British Lieutenant Colonel and Politician who served in the Seven Years' War and fought in the Battle of Minden (1759) and Battle of Campen (1760), dying as a result of wounds received in the latter.

Shea, on the printed stationery of The White House. Roosevelt thanks his correspondent for a fine inscribed copy of The Pioneers of Sydney Cove and remarks 'It is a strikingly beautiful piece of printing of which you have reason to be proud', further adding 'I was previously familiar with this work and I am therefore more appreciative of your gift. Warren led the Warren Commission, the presidential commission which investigated the assassination of John F. Kennedy, 1963. A vintage printed 8vo programme for the twenty-eighth Annual Meeting and Dinner held by the University of California Law School Association in honour of Earl Warren in the Rose Room of the Palace Hotel, San Francisco, 7th August 1954, signed and inscribed by Warren in blue ink to a clear area of the inside and also signed by two unidentified individuals, each with additional holograph sentiments. DINUZULU: (1868-1913) King of the Zulu Kingdom 1884-1913. Son of Cetshwayo. An extremely rare A.L.S., Dinuzulu, two pages, 8vo, Osuthu, 17th July 1906, to J. F. Clark R.M., in Zulu. The boldly penned letter is untranslated and features a lengthy postscript, making a reference to 2nd July 1906, and again signed by Dinuzulu with his initials. Together with a second, brief A.L.S., Dinuzulu, one page, 8vo, Osuthu, 18th July 1906, to C. J. Walls, in English. Dinuzulu states, in full, 'Please supply bearer 3 bottles whisky E.S.C.' Some light age wear, minor foxing, folds and creasing, G to about VG, 2 The present letters were written during the Bambatha Rebellion of 1906, after which Dinuzulu was accused of having given the orders to Bambatha kaMancinza to start the rebellion. The Zulu King was subsequently put on trial for treason and, although protesting his innocence, was found guilty and sentenced to four years imprisonment in March 1908.Provenance: The present letters were previously part of the Ray Rawlins collection of autograph letters and historical documents. The Illustrated London News of Saturday, 7th December 1907 described the Zulu chief Dinuzulu as 'a hopeless drunkard'.

John states that Mavis Wheeler had telephoned to say that she had delivered the drawings to the Royal Academy and continues 'I think you mentioned wanting a few more. I have a sheet of studies of a baby mounted & framed, also some sheets of studies of calves, mounted only, if you would like them - possibly to substitute for the others you have which were sent up before last year', concluding by remarking 'I'm trying hard to get the portrait done - but the very variable light is trying'. EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A rare, official T.L.S., Edward R I, as King, one page, 4to, London, n.d. (late January 1936), to Major F. A. M. Browning, on the printed mourning stationery of Buckingham Palace. The King's letter states, in full, 'I wish to place on record my gratitude to you for the part which you took in the vigil over my Father in Westminster Hall, from the 23rd to 28th January 1936'. Neatly laid down to a small folio card. Together with two unusual vintage photographs (7 x 9.5 and 12 x 11) being reproductions of different paintings by the artist Frank Beresford, each depicting the lying in state of King George V in Westminster Hall, one being the basis of Beresford's famous painting The Princes' Vigil: 12.15am, January 28, 1936, both of the photographs extensively annotated and signed by Beresford to the versos, and the larger additionally signed by Beresford to the lower photographer's mount and inscribed to Colonel Browning on St. George's Day, 1936. The signature on the letter is very slightly faded although perfectly legible. Some light age wear and corner creasing to the mounts, G to about VG, 3  Frederick Browning (1896-1965) British Lieutenant General of World War II, famous for his role in Operation Market Garden, September 1944.  Frank Beresford (1881-1967) British Painter who, in 1936, made the only painting of the Princes keeping vigil with their father's, King George V's, body overnight. The painting, titled The Princes' Vigil: 12.15am, January 28, 1936, was later bought by Queen Mary and presented to King Edward VIII on his birthday.

BADER DOUGLAS: (1910-1982) British World War II Ace (22.5 victories), recognized for his important role during the Battle of Britain. Bader was made a Prisoner of War at Colditz Castle during World War II. Signed 8.5 x 6.5 photograph of Bader in a full length pose wearing his flying overalls as he stands on the wing of his fighter plane. Signed in blue ink to the image, partially across a darker area, adding 242 (Canadian) Sqdn. 1940 in his hand to a light area at the base. Mounted on card and with some light wrinkling. Together with Pat Reid (1910-1990) British Army Officer of World War II, a Prisoner of War held at Colditz Castle. Reid was one of the few to escape from Colditz (1942). CLIFFORD HENRY HUGH: (1826-1883) British Major General, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at the Battle of Inkerman on 5th November 1854 during the Crimean war. Clifford later took charge of communications between Lord Chelmsford in Durban and the forces in the field during the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879. A.L.S., H H Clifford, four pages, 8vo, Horse Guards, 31st March 1870, to 'My dear Fruth'. Clifford thanks his correspondent for their kind note and remarks 'I am sure that I have to thank you; & I do so most sincerely for the very kind manner in which you have worked with me for the last 5 years & more particularly since I have held the appointment of O.G.M.G. here', further adding 'It has been a great pleasure to me to see the admirable manner in which you have worked all this time, & I only wish that His Royal Highness had all such faithful & conscientious officials under him as yourself'. NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) French Military and Political leader, Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. A.N.S., Napol, a bold example, in the margin of a L.S., Dejean, by Jean-Francois-Aime Dejean, one page, folio, Ministry of War, 22nd April 1807, in French. Dejean's letter is in the form of a Report to His Majesty the Emperor and commences 'I have the honour to bring to Your Majesty's attention that Marshal Augereau, upon his arrival in France, demanded the payment of his salary for the duration of his recovery', continuing 'Since I allowed myself to pay in France the peacetime salary only, I allowed the payment  of the salary allocated to his position as a Marshal of the Empire only' and concluding 'I implore Your Majesty to let me know if it is intended for Marshal Augereau to continue earning the General in Chief salary he was earning when commanding the 7th Corps of the Great Army, independently of his regular salary'. Napoleon's four line holograph note in the margin instructs that Augereau's salary as General in Chief should be paid until 1stJune. With blank integral leaf. Napoleon entrusted Augereau with important commands and he fought with great distinction in the French Revolutionary Wars and Napoleonic Wars. In early 1807, shortly before the present report was issued, Augereau fell ill with fever and at the Battle of Eylau on 7th February 1807 he had to be supported on his horse. Nevertheless he directed the movements of his corps with his usual bravery.

MARX KARL: (1818-1883) German Philosopher, Economist, Historian and Socialist Revolutionary. An extremely rare, brief A.L.S. with his initials K. M., one page, 8vo, n.p. (London), 18th March 1872, to [Maurice La Chatre] 'Cher Monsieur', in French. Marx states that he had forgotten to enclose La Chatre's response with his letter. A few light creases to the edges and corners and a couple of small holes to the lower right corner, none of which affect the text or signature. CHARLES II: (1630-1685) King of England, Scotland (1649-51) and Ireland 1660-85. D.S., Charles R, as King, at the head, the signature very weak and only barely visible, one page (vellum), oblong folio, Court at Whitehall, April 1663. The manuscript document is a military commission appointing Edward (surname not entered) to be a Captain of a Company of Foot in a regiment 'at present employed for Our Service in Our City & Garrison of Tanger'. Countersigned at the foot by Henry Bennet (1618-1685) 1st Earl of Arlington. English Statesman, Secretary of State for the Southern Department 1662-74. With the minor remnants of a red wax seal. Some holes to the folds, minor areas of loss and light overall dust staining and age wear, only about G Tangier, in Morocco, was under Iberian rule until 1661 when it was given to King Charles II as part of the dowry of the Portuguese infanta Catherine of Braganza. A squadron under the admiral and ambassador Edward Montagu arrived in November 1661 and by January 1662 English Tangier was fully occupied. The King praised the city as 'a jewell of immense value in the royal diadem'.

[LINCOLN ABRAHAM]: (1809-1865) American President 1861-65. Asassinated. A small piece of light coloured wood measuring 0.5 x 2.5 inches, previously lightly mounted to an oblong 8vo sheet of notepaper although now detached, being a piece of wood removed from the site of Abraham Lincoln's home in Springfield, Illinois, the notepaper annotated in ink 'A piece of wood from Lincoln's Springfield Home' and signed by Herbert Wells Fay with an inscription dated 6thJune 1940. The notepaper also has a brown oak leaf neatly attached alongside a further annotation by Fay, 'Oak leaf from tree at Lincoln's tomb'. With blind embossed heading H. W. Fay, Custodian Lincoln's Tomb, Springfield, Illinois and blank integral leaf. GIBSON GUY: (1918-1944) British Airman of World War II, Wing Commander of 617 Squadron. Victoria Cross winner for his actions during Operation Chastise (The Dambusters Raid) on the Mohne and Eder Dams in Germany, 16th May 1943. A rare, bold pencil signature ('Guy P Gibson V.C.') to the verso of half of a postcard, the recto bearing the typed name of Mr. A. R. Knowles and two rubber stamped 3 numerals. Slightly irregularly trimmed to one edge and with some light creasing and age wear. Together with an 8vo sheet of plain notepaper featuring four original pencil drawings of aircraft in flight, unsigned and executed in an unidentified hand (although certainly not by Gibson). Some creasing to the edges, G, 2 Provenance: According to information supplied by the vendor the present signature was obtained in person on 22nd June 1943 at Buckingham Palace by Arthur Knowles, a relative of the vendor, when both he and Gibson were in attendance at the investiture which saw the pilot presented with the VC and Bar to his DSO by the future Queen Elizabeth II, thereby making him the most highly decorated serviceman in the country. This would therefore make the present signature one of (if not, the) the earliest examples with a Victoria Cross suffix. Arthur Knowles OBE CBE served as Secretary General of the Association of British Chambers of Commerce from 1945-46.

Established in the 1970s, Jean Machine has been described by Esquire magazine as being 'best known for kitting out London's cool kids in properly fitted, unfussy jeans'.

WHITE GEORGE S.: (1835-1912) British Field Marshal, Victoria Cross winner for his actions at Charasiah in Afghanistan, 6th October 1879. White commanded the garrison at the Siege of Ladysmith 1899-1900. A.L.S., George S. White, four pages, 8vo, The Convent, Gibraltar, 20th January 1903, to Lady Acland. White states that Captain Currie has shown him his correspondent's kind note regarding a dinner with Mr & Mrs Broadrick and remarks 'I shall be very glad to fall in with your proposal to entertain them on Thursday the 29th but both on public & private grounds I think it would be better for you not to have me or my daughter', further adding 'I will therefore make no arrangement for them for Thursday the 29th evening. I have a dinner party tonight that I did not like putting off again as most of those coming had been engaged to me when I had to put them off on my wife's departure for England'. PELHAM HENRY: (1694-1754) British Prime Minister 1743-54. An extremely rare A.L.S., H: Pelham, one page, 4to, n.p., 24th August 1727, to a gentleman. Pelham acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter, adding that he has 'sent to Collonel Steward and the other persons mentioned not to punish any of those soldiers who voted for Mr. Hope, nor let them in any degree suffer for their so doing' and further remarking 'I am glad Mr. Hope has so good a voucher for his principles as you are, he was an entire stranger to me, but now I am convinced he is a good protestant'. Pelham also wishes his correspondent success in his county election, just as he did at Rochester, and states that they have tried to assist with votes 'and I make no doubt that you will find the benefit of it when you come to Poll'. Autograph letters by Pelham are extremely rare and his signature is usually encountered on Treasury documents (or fragments removed from them). Some light age toning to the edges, only very slightly affecting the text and signature, and with a few very minor tears at the edges and some traces of former mounting to the verso, G Pelham's letter was written whilst serving as Secretary at War from 1724-30 and his correspondent may have been David Polhill (1674-1754) who served as Member of Parliament for Rochester from 1727-41 (and again from 1743-54).

[BOER WAR]: HELY-HUTCHINSON WALTER (1849-1913) Anglo-Irish Diplomat & Colonial Administrator, Governor of Natal 1893-1901 and Governor of Cape Colony 1901-10. An interesting A.L.S., Walter Hely-Hutchinson, four pages, 8vo, Natal, 8th November 1899, to Murray, on the printed stationery of Government House. Hely-Hutchinson thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'I have just repeated Royston's pigeon post message to you. Reuter says the Boers caught his messenger; and a telegram has just come in from Pretoria with practically the same list of wounded', further continuing 'Tugela Ferry reports hearing about 8 shots this morning in Umbulwana direction; firing then ceased. I wonder whether our four inch gun has got to work & silenced them? They seem very cheery at Ladysmith…..If old Joubert keeps hanging on to Ladysmith, things will come all right soon'. In a postscript Hely-Hutchinson writes 'Please say to your Corps how much I value their patriotic service: & that I intend to make the corps the subject of a special report to the G[overnor] G[eneral]'. CARTERET JOHN: (1690-1763) 2nd Earl Granville. British Prime Minister for four days in February 1746. An extremely rare, good A.L.S., Granville, three pages, 4to, Arlington Street, 3rd March 1752, to 'Madam'. Carteret writes an informative social letter, sending news of a birthday which he had attended, 'I was there this morning, not only all ye rooms were so full, yt one could not move about, but ye streets so crowded to St. James's…..I saw Ldy. Charlotte Finch there, very handsomely dresst, & Ldy. Juliana Penn, who was almost from ye highest to ye lowest finely dresst & I think one of ye best figures there. Ldy. Louisa was very greatly dresst, & with her nieces. Jewels were as fine…..', further adding that Lady Charlotte had dined with him but will not attend a Ball, and neither will Lady Juliana, 'but Ldy. Louisa is gone, wth Lady. Egremont, & Ldy. Granby. Ldy. Louisa is to dance…..I assure you every body is pleas'd wth her & say she is improved' and further remarking that he has received a good account from Bath, 'Ld. Pomfret has got a true, painfull fit of ye Gout, wet will do him a vast deal of good' adding 'I saw Mr. Fox today who came from Bath Sunday morning last, who confirms this to me…..however great yr. concern may be for his pain I have had ye Gout painfully in my left foot for ten days, but am ye better for it, tho I was forced to go to ye Birthday to day with a great shoe.' Carteret also states that 'Tomorrow we are all to be in black again, so this is ye only day of sunshine….The King lookd perfectly well, told me he knew people again now they were out of black. He was in purple, without weepers…..' and reports the death of the Countess of Yarmouth's mother, remarking 'That old Ldy was one of ye best friends, yt ever I had, so I regret her much……' Some show through of ink to the first and second pages and some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Carteret's subscription to the present letter reads 'Y[ou]r L[adyshi]ps most dutifull Son & obedient humble servant', apparently indicating that he was writing to his mother, however she had died in 1744. Lady Charlotte Finch (1725-1813) Royal Governess to the children of King George III and Queen Charlotte from 1762-93. Lady Juliana Penn (1729-1801) English wife of Thomas Penn who assisted him in the administration of the colony of Pennsylvania. The 'birthday' attended by King George II which Carteret describes in the present letter was presumably an anniversary held in honour of Queen Caroline who had been born on 1st March, although had died fifteen years earlier, in 1737. The Queen's death was widely mourned not only by the public, but also by the King, who refused to remarry.

A printed 4to brochure issued to promote the publication of the scientific record of forty years of outstanding medical research, entitled Selected Papers of Charles H. Best, including papers on insulin and diabetes, heparin and thrombosis, choline and liver damage, the brochure featuring several pages of printed text, two images of Best, and a list of the contents of the publication. SMUTS JAN C.: (1870-1950) South African Prime Minister 1919-24, 1939-48. Smuts served in the field during the Boer War and later as a British Field Marshal during World War II. A.L.S., J. C. Smuts, one page, 8vo, Irene, 22nd April 1929, to Sir Thomas, on the printed stationery of the Library of Parliament, Cape Town. Smuts informs his correspondent that their letter was most welcome and interesting and comments 'Yes, the veterans are rapidly passing away. It is a privilege to have you still with us, giving words of wisdom and good cheer, now as in 1914'. Together with Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr (1894-1948) South African Politician, Deputy Prime Minister of South Africa 1943-48 and widely regarded to be the political successor to Smuts as Prime Minister before his untimely death at the age of 54. A.L.S., Jan H. Hofmeyr, two pages, 8vo, Treasury, Pretoria, 3rd January 1944, to [Professor] Rousseau. Hofmeyr thanks his correspondent for their letter and enclosures and comments 'It is rather a big budget that you have sent me, and, being very busy just now with pre-session work, I have little time to give to it. I must therefore abstain from comment, for the present at least', further adding that he is glad his correspondent's wife is in better health and that he is sorry he did not see more of them during a brief visit to Grahamstown 'which I found quite stimulating'. SLATIN RUDOLF CARL VON: (1857-1932) Anglo-Austrian Major General and Administrator in the Sudan. As Governor General of Darfur Slatin was forced to surrender to the Mahdists and an attempt was made to use him to induce General Gordon, the Governor General of Sudan, to surrender. This failed and Slatin was placed in chains and on 26th January 1885, shortly after the fall of Khartoum, Gordon's head was brought to the camp and shown to the captive Slatin. Vintage signed cabinet photograph (5 x 8.5) depicting Slatin standing in a three quarter length pose wearing his military uniform.
