The Light Car, 1913 to 1917. A very good collection of very rare magazines by Iliffe & Sons, competitors to the more common Temple Press Lightcar magazine. A well-illustrated weekly journal comprising three small quarto hardbound volumes in modern black cloth with gilt lettering to the spines, holding the issues from Volume III, January 6, 1915 to Volume VII, January 3, 1917; together with a further two hardbound volumes in period dark brown cloth with gilt lettering to the spines, holding the issues from Volume VII, January 3, 1917 to Volume VIII, December 26, 1917. All the issues are bound with their covers, the latter two volumes including title pages and indices bound in at the front of the volumes. There is some page browning through age, otherwise all the issues appear to be in generally very good, clean and sound condition. The lot also includes a collection of loose issues from 1913 and 1914, all with their covers but in variable condition, comprising: Volume I, Nos. 4 to 30; plus Nos. 32 to 36; and Vol. II, Nos. 38 to 41; plus Nos. 43, 52, 56, and 60. Two hardbound small quarto volumes in very worn half-leather, holding the issues of the magazine The Cyclecar from Volume I, No. 1, 28th May 1913, to Volume II, No. 26, 21st May 1913, by which time the title had changed to The Light Car and Cyclecar. Bound with the magazine covers and appearing to be complete and sound, albeit with page browning through age. Together with 29 loose issues, each in separate transparent sleeves, and all bar one with their covers. Most appear to be in decent condition, though with page browning as usual and with some covers a bit worn, loose, marked or frayed. Original staples holding the 24pp editorial and results between folded beige card cover, English text. Some soiling and edge feathering to the cover, otherwise very good. Also, a circa 1922 FIAT 519 cord-tied brochure printed on light green textured card, six tipped-in colour body-style depictions with tissue covers, Italian text. (2)
An 18th century gentleman's whitework waistcoat of fine corded quilting The fully quilted front of floral decoration with two pocket flaps and 19 fabric buttons, the back of the waistcoast in white brushed cotton, a fine linen interior. Made to fit a larger gentleman. Length 71cmTogether with a pair of heavy cotton men's white trousers, possibly 19th century but with replaced modern buttons.Waistcoat: A 3cm hole to one shoulder, and brown spotting. This is the most serious area of damage. Some pinholes in the lining and various area of light staining, now illustrated in photographs. A couple of the fabric buttons have unravelled. No evidence of repair.
