Dutch school; second third of the 18th century."Moses rescued from the waters".Oil on canvas. Relined.Presents repainting and restorations.Measurements: 91 x 122 cm.We see in this canvas a biblical scene, the finding of Moses newborn in the waters of the Nile by the daughter of the pharaoh. The story is told from a classicist point of view, with the women represented as nymphs bathing naked in the river. In addition, on the left side the space opens in depth to the landscape, and lets us see the entablature and pediment of a classical temple. Also at the formal level it is a classicist work, with the figures placed as a frieze, organized in two planes close together forming a triangular composition that leads to think, in fact, in the reliefs of a classical pediment. The apex of this pyramidal structure is the head of the pharaoh's daughter, who bends down and points towards the newborn, guiding the viewer's gaze towards him. Also typical of the classicist baroque is the perfectly ordered scenery, closed in the foreground on the right side and open towards the background on the left, allowing more light to pass through. The chromatism, of pearly flesh tones, reveals the knowledge of the Venetians, while the general warm intonation tells us of the Caravaggist influence even in the followers of classicism.Regarding the theme represented, this is based on the Old Testament (Exodus 1:15-17), it tells how there is an ordinance by the Pharaoh, to kill all males born, the mother of Moses, Iojebed, hid her baby (Moses) for three months, but once she could not hide him anymore, she decided to introduce him in a wicker basket filled with mud and tar, to deposit it in the Nile, hoping that the child would be found. During the crossing of the waterproof basket, Moses was followed by his sister Miriam, until finally, he was found.

Lot 91

Spanish mannerist school; first half of the 16th century."Assumption of the Virgin".Oil on panel. It has flaws, slight cracks in the wood and loss of the upper frame ribbon.Measurements: 61 x 55 cm; 69 x 63 cm (frame). The expression Assumption is significant: it is opposed to the Ascension, as the passive to the active. That is, Mary does not ascend to heaven by her own means, like Christ, but is elevated to Paradise by the angels. Byzantine art represents the Assumption of the Virgin's soul, collected by Christ on his deathbed. On the other hand, Western art depicts her bodily Assumption outside the tomb where the apostles had buried her. Therefore, a distinction must be made in iconography between the Assumption of the Virgin's soul in the form of a child and the Assumption of her glorious body, the latter being the one represented here. The European model presents Mary as we see in this work: in a prayerful attitude, raising her joined hands and surrounded by golden light, carried by angels and leaving the open tomb at her feet, which may appear empty or full of lilies and roses. This is a painting of devotional character, since the attention is focused on the figure of the Virgin and not on the episode itself represented, the Assumption. In fact, all narrative elements are eliminated, and the composition acquires a clear decorative sense, with the angels surrounding Mary like a garland of flowers. Mary appears full-length, in a typically Mannerist "contraposto" position, with the body turning on itself in an ascending and twisting posture that, in a way, advances Baroque forms. However, her figure is closed, still classical, with her arms folded over her chest and her hands joined in a prayerful position, in addition to the folds of the drapery falling almost completely vertically, with hardly any flight. In addition, Mary's face appears turned and slightly inclined, reflecting humility and piety and compensating the ascending sense of the image, in a subtle and very thoughtful way, typically mannerist. Due to the technical characteristics, such as the modeling of the forms, the tonalities used, the type of composition, and even the aesthetic details used in the treatment of the fabrics that make up the scene, this work can be inscribed within the mannerist school.

They ring when tapped, they gauge at .732 and .733, the tubes are not dented. The bores have occasional pitting spots which might polish out but might be too deep to do this without thinning the walls. The wall thicknesses are not known. The barrels are tight on the action with only the most minimal perceivable amount of wobble when the forend is removed. The metalwork generally has a dark brown / plum patina with light pitting, the blacking to the barrels is fading. The stock has some wear to the chequering but no splits or cracks or repairs. This gun would benefit from a good overhaul and clean up to look a lot better.Right barrel (sighting down the gun) .732 9inches from the breech, .729 9 inches from the muzzle, .662 at the tip of the muzzle. The action appears to function correctly. The retaining clip sping which the bolt head attaches to or removes from when taking the bolt out of the gun is weak and therefore the bolt head does not clip down as firmly as normal when placing the bolt back in the gun. This does not affect the functionality of the gun. The stock has been refinished probably when it was FTR 'd in 1953. The metal work has some scuffs and wear to the paint finish. The magazine serial number does not match that of the rest of the gun.

The wood scabbard at this point has a section broken away and missing. The grip is lacking the loop from the pommel. The blade has very minor occasional dark patches around the cutting edge. There are some very minor nicks to the cutting edge but it does not look like it has been fought with or hit against a hard surface. These nicks can be seen by blowing image 12 up, they are just ahead of the light shine on the blade. There are small signs of light pitting that have been polished out. When sighting along the sword blade as if it were a rifle, there is a very slight bend or snake that can be seen. If you blow image 9 up, above the shine of the light there is a slight fault that can be seen. We are not sure if this is a crack, a fault in the blade or a patch of pitting.
