The work denounces both dissenters (the 'guts') who attacked the Church of England and the monarchy, and those comprehensionist Anglicans (the 'brains') who sympathised with their cause.

Mathers is primarily remembered as one of the founders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
