Pieter Hugo Naudé (South African 1868-1941) PALMIET LAGOON signed oil on panel PROVENANCECollection of Professor J. Smith, Stellenbosch/Johannesburg 28,5 by 39,5cm Though often seen as South Africa’s first Impressionist, Hugo Naude’s practice was never a formal or academic display of Impressionism in the orthodox Parisian manner, with its interest for optical sensation. The artist, while well-aware of the schools of thought and art, did not subscribe to any artistic doctrine nor prescribed ideology. Rather, his approach was intuitive, more concerned with portraying the particular qualities of this scene, often painted en plein air as he captured a fleeting moment in time. The spontaneous brushwork and lush surface detail of colour and texture were deployed with the artist’s mastery of his compositional elements of colour and structure. The use of subtle guiding lines to draw in the viewer and lead one through the image, the eye moving along the curve of the lagoon’s bank, experiencing the push and the pull of the clouds receding over the crashing ocean and into the distance of the horizon, and framed by the swelling rocks, grass and flowers of the foreground and the jutting peninsulas on the right of the composition.Naudé’s work is a paean to the South African landscape, to the light and colour of the world whichwashed over the artist and which he so poetically recorded. - L.C.Berman, E. Painting in South Africa, Southern Book Publishers, 1993, p. 12-15Berman, E. Art and Artists of South Africa, A.A. Balkema, 1983, p. 302-304Naudé, A.
