This lithograph was made at the instigation of the Atelier Matthieu in Zurich and relates to a 1965 painting, Different Kinds of Water Pouring into a Swimming Pool, Santa Monica (private collection). The depiction of water in these pictures is highly stylised. Hockney later said that water 'offered an opportunity for abstraction - almost as much a recurring desire as painting a portrait' (Stangos, p.100). This is a key feature of the present lot, which dates to the 1990s. Inspired by a simple Christmas wreath in which the supporting wires were barely visible and clusters of leaves glistened with snow at different angles, Harry Winston sought to develop light platinum settings that would maximise the brilliance of the diamonds and minimise the supporting framework. With a legacy spanning almost ninety years, the firm maintains this philosophy to this day. Having acquired, cut, sold and donated some of the world's most important diamonds, the brand is known for sourcing rare and fine gems and has remained steadfast in its commitment to the integrity of the most exceptional stones. Jacques Timey was a Swiss jeweller and his distinctive maker's mark, seen on this Harry Winston necklace, was registered on 17th January 1966.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY DIAMOND NEGLIGÈE PENDANT/NECKLACEThe cushion-shaped diamond surmount suspending two knifewire drops set with similarly-cut diamonds, each side terminating with a rose-cut diamond in a foiled closed-back setting, to a fine trace-link chain, mounted in platinum, lengths: chain 38.7cm, pendant 5.3cm, cased by Hubert et Van Regemorter, 56, Rue de la Loi, 55, BruxellesFootnotes:This early 20th century diamond pendant is set with two well-matched rose-cut diamonds , it is unusual to find a matched pair of rose-cut diamonds of this quality and sizes : one of 9.2 mm x 8.75 mm and one of 9.1mm x 8.55 mm. The introduction of the multi-faceted rose-cut diamond can be traced back to the sixteenth century with the advancement of more sophisticated cutting techniques. In its original state, the rose-cut is formed of domed top with 24 facets and a flat base. The faceted domed top was intended to catch the light in a more effective way than the previously popular table-cut stones. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
