THE NATURAL (1984) - Robert Redford-Autographed Roy Hobbs' Rehearsal "Wonderboy" Bat - A Robert Redford-autographed Roy Hobbs' rehearsal "Wonderboy" bat from Barry Levinson's sports drama The Natural. Baseball star Hobbs' signature bat Wonderboy was carved from the wood of a tree that was struck by lightning at the same time his father (Robert Rich III) suffered a heart attack. While the standard Wonderboy bats featured in the film were wood-burned, the text and symbol on this example were carved in and then outlined with marker; the bat was used during production for rehearsals, and may have been one of the early prototypes for the wood-burned bats seen on screen. When filming wrapped on the movie, this bat was signed and inscribed by Redford and gifted to Chris Pollack - the son of the film's costume designer Bernie Pollack and nephew of the producer Sydney Pollack. The inscription reads: "Dear Chris, This is my bat and it is impervious to your pitching - Robert Redford (Roy Hobbs)." Chris was an aspiring baseball player himself and previously spent time on set during filming, where he got to know Redford and other cast members.A few years later, when Chris Pollack signed with the Montreal Expos and entered professional baseball, Redford sent him a letter of congratulations stating "I know it was the bat," a joke that this Wonderboy prop bat was the reason for Pollack's success.Designed by property master Barry Bedig from period-specific Louisville Sluggers, this light brown oak bat features "Wonderboy" and a lightning-shaped "W" symbol carved into it. Also included is a color photograph of Chris Pollack and Robert Redford on set, which is signed and inscribed "Can you spot the Natural? Fondly, Robert Redford"; the congratulations letter Redford sent to Pollack in 1987; two strips of negatives for photos taken on set while Pollack visited enclosed in an envelope printed with a "The Natural" logo in the upper left corner; an invitation to the film's premiere enclosed in a Tristar envelope with a matching production logo; an RSVP card to the invitation; and a site map for the studio premiere. It is frequently cited as one of the best baseball movies ever made. The bat exhibits light scratches from use and fading from its age. This period-correct glove was custom-made for Roy Hobbs' (Robert Redford) use in the film. At the start of production, a batch of left hander's gloves was fabricated specifically to be used by Hobbs, as Redford is left handed and was one of the few "lefties" in the film. Redford ultimately used several different gloves across different scenes in the film, and the few other left handed performers in the film who needed gloves for baseball sequences may have used them as well. The Hobbs gloves also had additional padding installed in the palm for Redford. Lot 395

STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH (2005) - Anakin Skywalker's (Hayden Christensen) Bladed Dueling Lightsaber - Anakin Skywalker's (Hayden Christensen) bladed dueling lightsaber from George Lucas' Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. Anakin Skywalker used his lightsaber in combat throughout the film, most famously during his fateful climactic duel against Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) on the fiery surface of Mustafar. This lightsaber was specifically constructed for the film and features a different design to Anakin's lightsaber as seen in the prior episode. It features a resin handle cast around an aluminum sleeve with an upper and lower section secured together with threaded rod from the base of the blade. With its chrome-plated finish and grips painted black, this handle is similar to the hero version but with notable differences, including a distinct lack of buttons or knobs and a stepped-down neck area near the emitter designed to make handling and spinning easier for the actor during action sequences. This saber's red dueling blade is made of carbon fiber, a material unique to the third prequel film, with a threaded rod installed at the lower end and a clear plastic sheath intended to prevent blade chips from causing injuries. The carbon fiber blade was necessary so that the actors could duel on set, and was digitally replaced with a glowing blue blade in post-production.As a plot point, Anakin's lightsaber played a key role in the Star Wars franchise. Obi-Wan retrieved the lightsaber after the duel on Mustafar and passed it to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) in Star Wars: A New Hope, connecting the prequel and original trilogies. This dueling version is a superb example of the signature Anakin lightsaber, with light scuffs and scratches throughout the handle and blade, as well as minor tears in the blade's plastic sheath from production use. Dimensions: 48.75" x 2.75" x 2.75" (124 cm x 7 cm x 7 cm)Estimate: $50,000 - 100,000Bidding for this lot will end on Wednesday, June 28th. Lot 399

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Lorne Peterson Collection: Hand-Painted Joe Johnston Forced Perspective Flat Endcap Painting for Three-Dimensional Death Star Trench Model - A painting of the Death Star's trench endcap hand-painted by effects designer Joe Johnston for the production of George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. TIE fighters chased Rebels through the dangerous trenches lining the surface of the Death Star. This painting comes from the collection of miniature and optical effects unit model builder Lorne Peterson. It was created and cut by Johnston to be staged at the end of the massive Death Star model miniature set's trench in order to make the trench appear to extend into infinity through forced perspective. To accomplish that, the painting was flat-painted in mixed media on particle board. A behind-the-scenes photo (not included) from supplemental materials for the film shows Johnston painting this exact endcap painting. The painting is hand-marked "No. 2" in black marker on the reverse, and is believed to be only one of three endcaps made. It exhibits flaking paint, two punctures through its top corners, and edge wear throughout from production use. Dimensions: 40" x 30" (101.75 cm x 76.25 cm)Sold without copyright; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Renowned visual effects artist Lorne Peterson was born in 1944 in Vancouver, Canada. While designing whimsical playground equipment for McDonald's, Peterson was invited by fellow model maker John Dykstra to work in the miniature and optical effects department of George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope, where he helped design and build the Star Destroyers, Imperial TIE fighters, and other classic vehicles. During pre-production on the film, Peterson, Dykstra, and their cohort of fellow artists working under Lucas co-founded effects company Industrial Light & Magic. In later years, ILM would provide groundbreaking visual effects for many of the most successful franchises in the history of American cinema, including Star Wars, Back to the Future, and Ghostbusters, among many others. As ILM's chief model maker, Peterson's models were instrumental to the successes of the first six Star Wars films, as well as a variety of other blockbuster hits, including Jurassic Park, Hulk, and his former ILM colleague Joe Johnston's own Jumanji. In 1985, Peterson and fellow ILM artists Dennis Muren, Michael J. McAlister, and George Gibbs received an Academy Award® for Best Visual Effects for their work on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, one of several projects for director Steven Spielberg. In celebration of this pioneering 40-plus-year career, Propstore is proud to present a selection of key memorabilia from the personal collection of Lorne Peterson to the public for the first time. THE ABYSS (1989) - Light-Up 1/4-Scale Submersible Cab One Submarine Model Miniature - A light-up 1/4-scale submersible Cab One submarine model miniature from James Cameron's sci-fi adventure The Abyss. After Lieutenant Hiram Coffey (Michael Biehn) escaped in the mini-sub Flatbed with a primed warhead, Virgil "Bud" (Ed Harris) and Dr. Lindsey Brigman (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) chased after him in Cab One, damaging both submersibles.Reputed for its intense filming conditions, Cameron's Academy Award®-winning movie became a cult classic after the release of a 1993 special edition that tightened its pacing. This radio-controlled, 1/4-scale Cab One miniature is the only one created by visual effects supervisor Walt Conti for the chase sequence and resulting submarine crash. The sequence was achieved using both the quarter-scale functional submarine model and smaller scale models which were shot dry-for-wet and not submerged. Designed to withstand pressure exerted by up to 50 feet of water as well as effects used in action sequences, it is cast from fiberglass with an acrylic dome and foam, wiring, and various tube frame copper components filling the interior. A radio-controlled Dr. Brigman model miniature sits in the cockpit.During production, five kilowatts of working lights wired to and powered by internal nicad batteries were attached to the hull and frame. The lights have since been converted to modern LEDs. Due to its size and shape, the batteries allowed Conti's team to generate about 10 minutes of movement at full throttle, using re-engineered electric trolling motors to produce the required thrust. This model is hand-marked "Port 1" and "P 2" in black marker and intentionally distressed by production to appear well-used underwater. It exhibits discoloration, a buildup of grime, chipping, and notable adhesive residue, as well as missing components and fragility to the foam from age and exposure. Dimensions: 56" x 23" x 26" (142.25 cm x 58.5 cm x 66 cm)Contains electronics; see electronics notice in the Buyer's Guide.Special shipping required; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Estimate: $75,000 - 150,000Bidding for this lot will end on Wednesday, June 28th. Lot 405

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Hand-Painted Ralph McQuarrie X-Wing Starfighter and Imperial TIE Fighter Illustration - An illustration of an X-wing starfighter and an Imperial TIE fighter hand-painted by Ralph McQuarrie from the production of George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. This artwork was created circa August 1976, and later printed on T-shirts for US-based crew members, including the staff at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). The ships in the artwork were likely a deliberate choice by McQuarrie to represent ILM's work. This illustration is one of the few produced for the film that includes an X-wing. It is shown here in its final design form with four distinct engines rather than two, and features the earlier blue-striped fuselage which progressed to a red stripe later in production. The piece features a number of McQuarrie's signatures, including the orange planet in the background (similar to the well-known triangular "The Star Wars" logo McQuarrie designed), the arched framing (similar to the "Fantastic Five" painting), a soft gradient on the lettering, and airbrushed engine, laser, and motion streaks to add energy to the piece. This illustration is rendered in mixed media, primarily including gouache, on illustration board. Below the "Star Wars" lettering is a pasted-on additional piece of paper likely added to cover an earlier abandoned design element. The board also features press-on lettering reading "the star wars corp. 1976." The artwork is stored with a clear acetate cover layer and an additional paper cover that McQuarrie applied after completing it. It remains extremely well-preserved with no fading and only a minor surface tear outside of the image area. McQuarrie's original trilogy paintings are the pinnacle of his work; they are exceedingly rare and highly sought after by collectors. This is one of only a small number of McQuarrie paintings related to the first film known to exist in private collections today. Both the composition and content of the piece are superb, and a high-quality image of this artwork has never been published previously. Dimensions (on board): 16.5" x 19.25" x 0.75" (42 cm x 48.75 cm x 2 cm)Estimate: $50,000 - 100,000Bidding for this lot will end on Wednesday, June 28th. Lot 409

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Robert Blalack's Praxis Optical Printer Used to Composite Every VFX Shot - The original "Praxis" optical printer used in 1976 and 1977 at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) to composite every visual effects shot in Star Wars: A New Hope. Robert Blalack, whose company name was Praxis, was an integral part of the VFX team for the groundbreaking film and earned an Academy Award® for his contributions. As part of his deal, Blalack rented his personal optical printer to the facility; ILM proceeded to invest heavily in improving, or "hot rodding," the printer to achieve the effects. Beyond the equipment, Blalack solved the critical problem of organizing the VistaVision compositing workflow that was incredibly challenging in the pre-digital age.Blalack acquired the Praxis printer before Star Wars. When he finished on the film, he retained the printer and subsequently used it on numerous other projects, including Blues Brothers, Airplane!, RoboCop, and more. This printer consists of a camera, two projectors, and a lamp housing, which allow various film elements to be composited into a single shot. While some components have been upgraded or modified in the time since Star Wars (such as the lamp housing), much of it remains original and in good overall condition, though the printer is currently non-optical. Also included are the original wooden magazine, an electronic control panel believed to post-date Star Wars (though other wiring elements are no longer present), and various other small components. The printer's base is a converted lathe bed, as the printer had to be rock-solid so as to not vibrate during precision compositing work. The original Star Wars changed filmmaking forever, and this printer was a core and pivotal tool in the work accomplished at Industrial Light & Magic. The historic Praxis printer and the work of Robert Blalack are well-known to visual effects aficionados and represent the major leap forward in technology and process achieved at ILM. Dimensions: 148" x 68" x 30" (376 cm x 173 cm x 76.5 cm)Contains electronics and mechanical components; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Special shipping required; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.Estimate: $50,000 - 100,000Bidding for this lot will end on Wednesday, June 28th. Lot 410

STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE (1977) - Exploded Pyrotechnic X-Wing Fuselage Model Miniature Components - A set of exploded pyrotechnic X-Wing fuselage model miniature components from George Lucas' Star Wars: A New Hope. This remnant originated from an exploded model used during the film's groundbreaking battle sequences. This lot comes from the collection of veteran model maker Dave Jones. It exemplifies Industrial Light & Magic's (ILM) ad-hoc creation of cruder models sans paintwork given that they needed more models than originally planned. While high-quality, fully-finished model miniatures for pyrotechnical work were planned, necessity and logic lead to the creation of lower-quality models, given that these would not be fully-realized in photography prior to their destruction. As such, this lot features a foam fuselage with five small plastic "kitbashed" components in a gray speckled paint and fine mechanical detail. The fuselage sans its red striping, like other cruder pyro models that appear in the film, exhibits damage from production, with a melted side and a burned top hull. This lot exhibits fragility from deliberate scoring for spark visibility and to aid its breaking apart, hot glue remnants from mounting, chipped paint, and discoloration. Dimensions: 12" x 3" x 2.5" (30.5 cm x 7.75 cm x 6.5 cm)Estimate: $8,000 - 16,000Bidding for this lot will end on Wednesday, June 28th. STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983) - Stuart Ziff Collection: Sarlacc Tooth - A sarlacc tooth from Richard Marquand's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Jabba the Hutt sentenced Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and his friends to die by being cast into the Great Pit of Carkoon, where the sarlacc digested its victims over 1,000 years. This foam tooth comes from the collection of chief articulation engineer Stuart Ziff. Constructed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) for the sarlacc's cavernous fanged mouth, it is applied with a thin urethane skin and painted in shades of red and brown.
