(43cm.) high. Cracks to shoulder plate at back; right foot mis-shapen. One knitted shoe missing.

Christopher Simpson (c.1605-1669), English composer, theorist, and viola da gamba player. He fought on the Royalist side in the English Civil War, and later was employed by Sir Robert Bolles. His tutoring of Sir Robert's son John (b. 1641) occasioned the writing of The Division-Violist (London, 1659; 2nd ed. 1665), praised by Jenkins, Coleman, and Locke. Another of Simpson's pupils, Sir John St. Barbe, inspired The Principles of Practical Musick (London, 1665), which became the Compendium of Practical Musick (London, 1667). Simpson's instrumental works are all for viol, with or without other instruments, and vary in difficulty. Wing S3810. (1)

*Smallwood (William, Light Music Composer, 1831-97). An archive of sheet music, scrap albums and manuscript ephemera relating to William Smallwood and Smallwood Metcalfe, 19th and early 20th c., including three albumen print cartes-de-visite of William Smallwood, a scrap album of concert programmes and handbills from the concerts he attended, solicitors bills, receipts, etc., a few manuscript scores, a photo. of Henry J. Wood signed and inscribed by him to Smallwood Metcalfe, an album of newspaper cuttings about Metcalfe's Choir, and approx. 100. William Smallwood sheet music items in orig. printed wrappers and five bound vols. William Smallwood was a prolific popular composer of the late 19th century. He was born and lived in Kendal all his life and made a small fortune through the much reprinted 'Smallwood's Pianoforte Tutor'. He also transcribed and arranged for either piano or organ a quantity of music by Mozart, Haydn, etc. This archive comes from a direct descendent and many items bear his ownership signature. A brass bound Handford’s patent “Light Water Proof leather Travelling Trunk of the Duke of Richmond”, wooden construction, covered in black leather with brass edges, bands, locks, maker’s plate and nameplate engraved “Duke of Richmond”, inside lid compartment opens to reveal detailed maker’s label with 1801-16 Royal Arms and illustration of this type of trunk in the lower right corner, lined with black leather, size 18” x 12” x 10”. Good Condition (much outer leather worn away, painted black). Plate 4. Note: Charles, 4th Duke of Richmond, served with The 72nd Regt, becoming Colonel in 1758 and General in 1782, he was MP for Sussex 1790 to 1806, Lord Lieut of Ireland 1807-13 and Gov General of Canada from 1818 until his death the following year. His wife, the Duchess, held the famous ball in Brussels prior to the Battle of Waterloo.
