Received June 6, - Read June 21, 1849 (pages 61-82). London: Printed by Richard and John E. Taylor, 1850. 4to (300 x 230mm). Tables. Original printed wrappers (upper wrapper and title detached, light stain to upper wrapper, some fraying and creasing to backstrip, corners a little eroded). Provenance: later stamps on title and occasionally internally. FIRST EDITION OF JOULE'S HIGHLY IMPORTANT PAPER. "Joule began work about 1845 on a fourth method for determining the mechanical value of heat. His latest efforts received a polite but unremarkable reception at the Cambridge meeting of the British Association. This time the experiments involved a paddle wheel placed in a can filled with water. Weights attached over pulleys working in opposite directions communicated motion to the paddle wheel. Joule argued that 'the force spent in revolving the paddle wheel produced a certain increment in the temperature of the water'..." (DNB). In honour of the scientist, the name "joule" was given to the derived unit of energy equal to the energy transferred to an object when a force of one newton acts on that object in the direction of the force's motion through a distance of one metre. In the same volume is Michael Faraday's Experimental Researches in Electricity (No. VII, pages 171-188).

Diamond is bright and lively, estimated VS2 to SI1 clarity and H to J colour, assessed mounted. Diameter of setting 12.5mm. Surface wear to mount, worn ‘SS’ maker’s mark to hoop. Gross weight approx. 4.5gm. Second ring: Diamonds have a greyish appearance, some stones with chips and surface-reaching fractures. General surface wear to mount. Gross weight approx. 1.5gm.

A RUBY AND DIAMOND SET BRACELET WATCH BY DELANEAU FOR KUTCHINSKY, the circular dial pavé set with single-cut diamonds, to a circular convex case and shaped panel shoulders, pavé set throughout with graduated round brilliant-cut diamonds and circular-cut rubies, (rubies untested for natural/synthetic origin), on a fancy brick-link bracelet, the glass and case signed DeLaneau, the case also signed Kutchinsky and numbered 'L397 1684', with 18ct gold convention mark, the bracelet stamped 'MM 750', with inscription to clasp dated '23-7-89', total diamond weight approximately 0.75ct, case width 2.05cm Condtion report: Dial - good, crystal - good but with slight losses to the L and A of Delaneau signature, case - good, movement - not currently working, bracelet – good. Rubies are untested for natural/synthetic origin, most have light surface wear with occasional chips and scuffs. Diamonds are well matched, bright and lively, with estimated VS1 to SI1 clarity and H to J colour, assessed mounted. Approx. gross weight approx. 26.6gms. The movement has not been tested and working order cannot be guaranteed.

AN EMERALD AND BAROQUE PEARL NECKLACE, designed as a series of alternating graduated emerald beads and baroque pearls, with possibly later clasp stamped '9c', (pearls untested for origin), length 86cm Condition report: A 6cm section of the necklace has broken away to the front of the necklace and will require solder repairs to both ends. The emerald beads vary in shape and are heavily included with multiple fracture, fissure and mineral inclusions, giving a translucent appearance, and some of the fractures are surface-reaching. The emeralds have slightly variable light to mid bluish and yellowish-green hues and vary in size from approximately 10.5mm to 6mm in length. All have surface wear, chips, fractures and scuffs. The baroque pearls are untested as natural/cultured/freshwater and all have an uneven appearance, with ripples, pitting, creases and fractures to the nacre surface. The connecting wirework links are thin and have kinks, occasional solder repairs or breaks. The jump rings are not soldered and the clasp is functioning. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 21gm.

AN AQUAMARINE AND DIAMOND COCKTAIL RING, the rectangular step-cut aquamarine in double claw setting, between openwork ribbon bow shoulders of graduated single-cut diamonds, white precious metal mounted, (one diamond deficient), aquamarine dimensions approximately 23.5mm length x 16mm width x 10mm depth, total diamond weight approximately 0.40ct, ring size N Condition report: The aquamarine has a light greenish-blue hue with good transparency and occasional nicks/small chips/scuffs to the surface. Diamonds are well matched and fairly bright, with estimated VS2 to P2 clarity and H to L colour, some stones with chips/fractures. One diamond is missing and both ribbon shoulders have small splits and dark solder repairs. The mount has general surface wear and patchy tarnishing. The shank has possibly been re-sized. Meta; standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 13.5gm.

A FRENCH JADE AND CULTURED PEARL NECKLACE AND BRACELET SUITE BY DINH VAN, each designed as a paper-link chain, spaced by alternate jadeite beads and cultured pearls in square settings, signed Dinh Van, with French lozenge-shaped maker's marks and eagle's head gold marks, the necklace stamped '© 1972', the bracelet stamped '© 1971', (jade untested for treatments), lengths 74cm and 18cm respectively (2) Jean Dinh Van (born 1927) is a French jewellery designer and craftsman who established his own workshop and eponymous jewellery brand, Dinh Van, in 1965, producing pieces in a minimalist, Bauhaus-influenced style. Dinh Van had previously studied drawing, before joining Cartier Paris in 1946, where he learnt the craft of fine jewellery design under Jeanne Toussaint, Cartier's celebrated Artistic Director of Jewellery, who retired in 1970. Condition report: Light surface wear and occasional nicks, chips and scuffs throughout the mounts, cultured pearls and jadeite beads. Some surface pitting and surface-reaching fractures to the cultured pearls and beads. The clasps are functioning and the marks are clearly struck. The jadeite beads are opaque with light whiteish-green hues, measuring approx. 9mm to 9.3mm in diameter. The cultured pearls are well matched, of creamy-white hues, measuring approx. 7 to 7.5mm in diameter. Metal standard is untested. Combined gross weight approx. 36.4gm.

A DIAMOND AND GEM SET PANEL BROOCH BY CARTIER, modelled as a tree, with cabochon ruby and green agate flowerheads and foliage, accented with individual round brilliant-cut diamonds in millegrain collet settings, above a round brilliant, Swiss and single-cut diamond set trunk and vase of pierced, millegrain design, white precious metal mounted, with yellow metal pin, signed CARTIER and indistinctly numbered, total diamond weight approximately 0.55ct, length 2.65cm Condition report: Rubies have variable pinkish-red hues, most stones with fracture, feather, ‘silk’ and mineral inclusions that are visible under magnification. Some of the rubies have surface-reaching fractures and nicks/chips, all have light surface wear. The green agates are well matched with a cloudy/milky transparency and light surface wear. Diamonds are well matched, bright and lively, with estimated VS1 to SI2 clarity and H to J colour, assessed mounted. Largest diamond weight approx. 0.07ct. The mount has surface wear, scuffs, nicks and occasional areas of thinning to the edges of the setting. The pin is yellow metal, possibly later replaced, and functioning. The signature is positioned to the side of the vase, the number is positioned to the back of the vase but is difficult to read. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 7.9gm.

A YELLOW PRECIOUS METAL PENDANT NECKLACE, circa 1940-50, the wishbone-shaped fluted panel suspending three drops, on a brick-link back chain, with French eagle's head mark, length 40cm Condition report: Light surface wear and scuffs throughout. Occasional links are slightly mis-shapen. The clasp spring action is loose and the clasp may require replacement. Length of pendant 5.5cm. Gross weight approx. 14.5gm. Metal standard unknown.

AN EMERALD AND DIAMOND CLUSTER RING, the octagonal step-cut emerald claw set within a border of round brilliant-cut diamonds, two colour precious metal mounted, indistinctly stamped '18ct', total diamond weight approximately 0.40ct, ring size M½ Condition report: The emerald has a light green hue and contains fracture, fissure and needle-like inclusions, with surface wear and small chips to facet edges and the girdle. The emerald measures approx. 7.5mm length x 6.7mm width x 5.2mm depth. Diamonds have variable colour and clarity but give an overall lively appearance, some stones containing dark mineral inclusions, estimated SI1 to P3 clarity and H to K colour, assessed mounted. The ring mount has general surface wear, patchy tarnishing and the shank has been re-sized. Setting measures approx. 1.3cm length x 1.15cm width. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 4.2gm.

A GENTLEMAN'S 9CT GOLD CASED WRISTWATCH BY TUDOR, the rectangular silvered dial with gilt Arabic numerals and subsidiary seconds dial, to a jewelled manual wind movement, dial and movement signed, the 9ct gold case stamped 'Stolkace G.A.S.' and hallmarked for Chester 1948, with presentation inscription, on an unassociated gilt metal expanding-link bracelet, case width 2.15cm Condition report: Dial – patinated and with scratch marks, crystal with deep and light scratches and chips to corners, case with age related wear marks, movement winds and runs but not tested or guaranteed. A PAIR OF ONYX CUFFLINKS, each rectangular black onyx panel in collet setting, on hinged baton fittings, yellow precious metal mounted, stamped '14k', length 2.1cm Condition report: Light surface wear and patchy tarnishing to mounts, fittings are functioning. One cufflink has two minor splits to the corners and the back of the mount has been pushed in slightly. Glue residue at junctions of onyx to mounts. Each onyx panel measures approx. 17mm length x 12.5mm width. Approx. gross weight: 11.8gm

A SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND CLUSTER RING, the cushion-shaped mixed-cut sapphire in millegrain collet setting, bordered by round brilliant-cut diamonds, white precious metal mounted, with later sizing beads, total diamond weight approximately 0.25ct, ring size approximately I-J Condition report: The sapphire has a deep blue hue, with straight whiteish colour zoning visible when viewed at an angle to the table facet, light surface wear and small chips/nicks to facet edges. The sapphire measures approx. 5.2mm length x 4.5mm width x 3.4mm depth. Diamonds are bright and lively, but some stones have chips, surface-reaching fractures and mineral inclusions, estimated H to J colour and SI1 to P3 clarity, assessed mounted. The ring mount has surface wear, patchy thinning to the edges of the setting, and is fitted with later sizing beads. The back of the shank has worn thin. Length of setting approx. 1.05cm. Gross weight approx. 1.7gm.

Please note that we have been unable to remove the case back from this watch and therefore the movement and inner case have not been viewed. Originality of the movement and case back cannot be guaranteed.

A DIAMOND SET PENDANT, BRACELET AND RING SUITE, of abstract scrolled design, each collet set with rows of round brilliant-cut diamonds, platinum mounted, signed CSFJ and hallmarked for London 1979, the pendant on an 18ct white gold fine curb-link chain, total diamond weight approximately 1ct, pendant length 4.8cm, ring size O½ (3)Condition report: Diamonds are well matched, bright and lively, with estimated VS1 to SI1 clarity and H to J colour, assessed mounted. The mounts have light surface wear and patchy thinning to the edges of the settings. The ring has a split to one of the outer scrolled sections and the shank has been re-sized. Marks are clearly struck. Gross combined pendant, ring and bracelet weight approx. 25.2gm. Gross chain weight approx. 3.4gm.

The amethyst measures approx. 12.5mm length x 11mm width x 7.2mm depth. Diamonds are well matched, fairly bright and lively, but some stones have small fractures/chips, with estimated SI1 to P2 clarity and H to J colour, assessed mounted. The mount has surface wear throughout, with solder joins to the base of the setting and back of the shank. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 5.1gm.

A DIAMOND CLUSTER RING, the principal old-cut diamond claw set within a border of smaller similarly cut diamonds, two colour precious metal mounted, stamped '18ct', principal diamond weight approximately 0.45ct, remaining total diamond weight approximately 0.50ct, ring size S Condition report: The principal diamond is drawing a light yellowish hue and has outer chips/surface-reaching fractures, with estimated L to M colour and P2 clarity, assessed mounted. Bordering diamonds have slightly variable colour and clarity, some stones with chips/surface-reaching fractures, but give a lively appearance, estimated SI1 to P2 clarity and H to K colour, assessed mounted. The setting has been knocked slightly to one side and has surface wear throughout, with patchy rubbing to the claws. Diameter of setting approx. 1.2cm. Metal standard is untested. A VICTORIAN CITRINE PANEL BROOCH, the oval mixed-cut citrine in pinched collet setting, to a tiered openwork panel of foliate scrolls and beads, suspending plaited-link swags and two engraved amphora drops below, with later fitting, length 9.5cm Condition report: One bead missing to mount on right side of citrine. Mount and drops of hollow construction, with splits, holes and dents throughout, and areas of solder repair. Frame has been reinforced with solder repair at various points. Fittings are later replaced and functioning, pin is base metal. Some of the jump rings connecting to the swags appear to be replaced and gilt metal. Light surface wear, chips and scuffs to citrine, which measures approx. 26mm length x 20mm width. Metal standard of mount unknown. Gross weight approx. 20gm.

A DIAMOND AND GEM SET BAR BROOCH, designed as a line of circular mixed-cut brown zircons and yellow gemstones in millegrain collet settings, within a pierced and millegrain border of single and brilliant-cut diamonds, two colour precious metal mounted, cased by The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, total diamond weight approximately 0.45ct, length 6.5cm Condition report: Zircons are well matched but have a hazy appearance and facet edge abrasion. The yellow stones are untested, have a fairly lively appearance and have light surface wear. Diamonds are mostly well matched with a fairly bright and lively appearance, some stones with surface-reaching fractures and nicks/chips, estimated VS2 to P2 clarity and H to J colour, assessed mounted. The mount has surface wear, nicks and scuffs. Each end of the panel has evidence of a previous fitting that has been later removed. The pin and safety catch are functioning but may be later added. Solder joins are visible at junctions within the mount and the edges of the settings have patchy wear. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 9.8gm. Heavy wear to the case.

AN AMETHYST, PEARL AND DIAMOND BROOCH, centred with a cushion-shaped amethyst in millegrain collet setting, to a tapered bar of old and lasque-cut diamonds, terminating with trios of pearls, two colour precious metal mounted, cased, (pearls untested for origin, later clasp), length 4.2cm Condition report: The amethyst has a mid-purple hue with whiteish colour zoning and contains fracture inclusions, has light surface wear, and measures approx. 10.2mmm length x 10mm width x 6.9mm depth. Diamonds are a little greyish and contain some surface-reaching fractures. Pearls have a baroque outline, with obvious blemishes and pitting to the surface, and one pearl is missing a rivet. The bar has solder joins to both ends and the mount has surface wear, scuffs and chips throughout. The pin is functioning and the safety catch is replaced. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 4.1gm. The case is heavily worn.

Some of the fractures are surface-reaching. The emerald has scuffs and scratches throughout and chips/nicks to facet edges, and measures approx. 6.2cm length x 5.4mm width x 3.2mm depth. The outline of the emerald is slightly irregular. Diamonds are well matched, bright and lively, occasional stones with small surface-reaching fractures, estimated VS2 to SI3 clarity and H to K colour, assessed mounted. A TOURMALINE MULTI-STRAND NECKLACE BY MARCO BICEGO, comprising fourteen snake-link strands, variously spaced with free form pink tourmaline beads, signed BICEGO and stamped '750', in maker's case, shortest length 41cm Condition report: The pink tourmaline beads vary in shape and contain multiple fracture, fissure and mineral inclusions, giving a sub-transparent to translucent appearance, and some of the fractures are surface-reaching. The pink tourmalines have slightly variable light to mid orangey-pink hues and vary in size from approximately 11mm to 6.5mm in length. All have surface wear, fractures and scuffs. The necklace strands have light surface wear with no obvious kinks or catches. The clasp is tight fitting and the signature is clearly struck. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 49.3gm. The maker’s case is worn and the interior finish has degraded.
