A.L.S., Luigi Pirandello, on one side of a postcard, Girgenti, 12th November 1913, to Raffaele Simboli, in Italian. Pirandello announces `It is impossible for me to deny you anything` and continues `Please take anything by Erma Bifronte….any novels or short stories you would like to take. I will be happy with anything you give me.` The dramatist concludes by stating that he will see his correspondent in Rome in a few days time and asks for his dearest greetings to be sent to Tessa. HEMINGWAY ERNEST: (1899-1961) American Writer, Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1954. Bold blue fountain pen ink signature (`Best always, Ernest Hemingway`) on a 12mo white card featuring the logo of the American television network CBS in the upper left corner. Very light staining at the centre of the card, only slight affecting the signature which remains perfectly legible. About VG Between 1952-1960 seven of Ernest Hemingway`s works were produced by CBS Broadcasting Inc. including A Farewell to Arms and For Whom The Bell Tolls.

VERDI GIUSEPPE: (1813-1901) Italian Composer. A.L.S., G. Verdi, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to My Dear, possibly his wife, in Italian. The composer states that he is grateful that his correspondent is taking on the matter of finding a cook and refers to having been in Cremona. He continues `It is so difficult to find a good cook, and so it is possible that I will take the one you propose, that is, of course, if he is still free. Tell me meanwhile what he would be asking...` With blank integral leaf. Very light overall age toning, otherwise VG Verdi, as with many Italians, was particularly fond of food and one of his favourite dishes was a traditional potato ball soup. Indeed, biographers have stated that Verdi`s kitchen at the villa of Sant`Agata was a steaming forge of unforgettable aromas and flavours for guest and family.
BRAHMS JOHANNES: (1833-1897) German Composer. A.L.S., J. Brahms, two pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to `my cousin Hans!`, in German. Brahms writes, in part, `You seem not to be in favour of the Linden Lang school….Try to keep the programme in order as much as possible, as nicely as it used to be. I like to listen a lot, but I like the concert pieces the best…I intend to take part in the 9th, and also will probably listen to the last concert in Hamburg if I can do this. Give my regards to Bulow and thanks to you that you have remembered me…` A letter of good musical content. One slight split at the fold and some light tape stains caused by previous repairs, slightly affecting the text, which remains completely legible. G. Brahms undoubtedly refers to Beethoven`s 9th Symphony and it has been written that Brahms `knew the music of Beethoven better than any other musician in history` . Hans von Bulow (1830-1894) German Conductor, Pianist & Composer, a great supporter of the music of Brahms who one said `I believe in Bach, the Father, Beethoven, the Son, and Brahms, the Holy Ghost of Music`.
SHOSTAKOVICH DMITRI: (1906-1975) Russian Composer. Signed 6 x 7.5 photograph (neatly trimmed around the composer`s image and laid down to a 7 x 9 card with a brief typed biography at the base) of Shostakovich in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in blue ink across a light area of the image and dated 3rd October 1971 in his hand. About G
DELIUS FREDERICK: (1862-1934) English Composer. A.L.S., Frederick Delius, two pages, 8vo, Grove Mill House, Watford, n.d. (c.1914-18), to Mr. Haddock. Delius states that he remembers his correspondent`s father very well indeed, commenting `he was my first violin teacher`. The composer continues `The war is affecting everybody, not only students but also composers. I myself am entirely cut off from my German editors who have edited all my music.` Rare. The composer thanks his correspondent for having written on his birthday and for sending good wishes. Small tear to left edge, not affecting text or signature. Kray states that he will be happy to see John in the next few weeks and hopes that he has recovered from his accident, also asking to see a photograph of him. The manuscript document is addressed to Thomas, Earl of Danby and is a warrant for a payment of £100 to be made to Colonel Richard Kirby. Countersigned at the foot by the Earl of Danby (1631-1712, English Statesman, Lord High Treasurer 1673-1679). Accompanied by the original folder from Maggs Brothers of Conduit Street, London. Some very small, minor repairs at the edges and some extremely light overall foxing, about VG
GODERICH VISCOUNT: (1782-1859) British Prime Minister 1827-28. Scarce A.L.S., F. Robinson, one page, 8vo, Park Place, n.d. (`Saturday 6 1/2 P.M.`), to A. C. Grant. The statesman informs his correspondent that he has just received his note and `a little of sherry` and adds that he will take ten dozen `if that will not be calling upon you too much`. In concluding he refers to mutual friends and says that he will dine with Granthorne and try and fix a time to see Grant. With integral address leaf, bearing remnants of red wax seal and with a small area of paper loss. Together with Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865) British Prime Minister 1855-58, 1859-65. D.S., Palmerston, one page, folio, War Office, 8th January 1828. The partially printed document is addressed to Maria Purdy, widow of Lieutenant David Purdy of the King`s American Regiment in New York and states that the King has provisionally approved a pension of £40 per annum although asking Purdy to `without delay transmit certificates showing the age and cause of your Husband`s death`. A 12” long axe with a wooden haft and catlinite head, apparently presented to Gladstone, the eye of the head engraved ‘Presented [to; a slight chip causing loss of text] The Rt. Hon. W. E. Gladstone by D. A. Conmack, Watertown, Dakota’ Some light age wear and minor chipping to the head, otherwise VG Gladstone, who favoured America and supported the independence of the Confederate States in the American Civil War in a speech he made in October 1862, was famed for his wood cutting prowess.

AGUINALDO EMILIO: (1869-1964) Filipino General & Revolutionary, First President of the Philippines 1897-1901. Vintage signed and inscribed postcard photograph of Aguinaldo in a half length pose. Signed in dark fountain pen ink across a light area at the base of the image and dated 30th April 1950 in his hand. Rare. One very slight surface crease at the head of the image, otherwise VG
EARHART AMELIA: (1897-1939) American Pioneer Aviatrix, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic ocean. Book signed, a hardback edition of The Fun of It, sixth printing, published by Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York, 1932. Signed by Earhart with her name alone to the front free endpaper. Additionally annotated in an unidentified hand to the half title page, `This book given to Charles Burgoyne by Miss. Earhart when she spoke in the Senior High School at 14 & Maine while he was an usher, Spring of 37.` Accompanied by the dust jacket (heavy tears and creasing to the edges, some small areas of paper loss). Earhart`s signature is completely affected by a light brown stain caused by a piece of tape previously covering the signature, which remains perfectly legible. Front board loose, about G
WHITTLE FRANK: (1907-1996) English Royal Air Force Officer, inventor of the jet engine. Signed 7 x 5 photograph depicting Whittle, in later years, seated in a half length pose at his desk. Signed to a light area at the base of the image and dated 5th August 1982 in his hand. The signature is somewhat weak although perfectly legible. VG
MERCURY SEVEN: An oblong 8vo sheet of yellow ruled notepaper individually signed by six of the original Mercury Seven astronauts comprising Virgil Grissom, Deke Slayton, John Glenn, Gordon Cooper, M. Scott Carpenter and Wally Schirra. Each have signed the page with their names alone in blue ink. A good set of signatures and, although missing that of Alan Shepard, does feature the rare signature of Gus Grissom. Framed and glazed in a wooden carved frame to an overall size of 7 x 5. ARMSTRONG NEIL: (1930- ) American Astronaut, Commander of Apollo XI (1969). The first man to walk on the moon. Black ink signature (`Neil Armstrong`) on a sheet of 8vo headed notepaper from the Stadhuis in Durban. Irregular tear to top edge, with small loss of printed text, and file holes to the upper and lower edges, none affecting Armstrong`s signature. Light overall creasing, G
ALDRIN BUZZ: (1930- ) American Astronaut, Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo XI (1969). The second man to walk on the moon. Signed colour 8 x 10 photograph depicting Aldrin standing in a half length pose wearing his white NASA spacesuit. In the background a large image of the moon can be seen. Boldly signed in blue ink across a light area at the centre of the image, adding Apollo XI in his hand beneath his signature. EX
[COLLINS MICHAEL]: (1930- ) American Astronaut, Command Module Pilot of Apollo XI, the historic NASA mission which took the first men, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, to the moon on 20th July 1969. The personal NASA flight suit worn by Michael Collins, believed to have been used in connection with the Apollo XI mission and removed from his personal locker just six months after the historic flight following his retirement from NASA in January 1970. The sky blue heavy cotton flight suit bears the Flite Wear label of the manufacturers Land Mfg. Co. of Wichita, Kansas, official suppliers to NASA, and has numerous zipped pockets, snap pockets and Velcro patches (one of which, on the chest, would have originally carried Michael Collins` name tag) as well as a circular blue, white and red embroidered NASA logo patch stitched to the chest. From the collection of the former NASA physical conditioning supervisor to the Apollo astronauts, Joe Garino Jr., Accompanied by a letter of authenticity signed by Garino, illustrated with two images of the suit, and stating, in part `Blue Nasa flight suit worn by Michael Collins after his recovery from the Apollo XI mission….` The suit was removed and retained by Garino with the express permission of NASA astronaut L. Gordon Cooper. Signed at the conclusion by Garino and dated 16th April 2008 in his hand. An outstanding and exceptionally rare souvenir of a member of the Apollo XI crew who, along with Armstrong and Aldrin, is recognised as one of the greatest explorers of the 20th century. Some extremely light signs of wear and a few very light, minor stains at the base of the legs. VG Michael Collins was only involved as a crew member for two NASA missions, those of Gemini X (1966) and Apollo XI (1969).
BYRON LORD: (1606-1679) Richard, 2nd Lord Byron. British General who fought at Edge Hill, later Governor of Newark. D.S., Byron, one page, 8vo, n.p., 7th October 1673. The manuscript document relates to a payment of £125 upon an annuity of £500. Boldly signed at the foot. Some very light age wear to the edges, otherwise VG
LUCAN EARL OF: (1800-1888) British Soldier who commanded the cavalry division, including the famous Light Brigade, at the Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War. A.L.S., Lucan, two pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d. (`Tuesday`), to `My dear Harris` (?), on the blind embossed stationery of the United Service Club. Lucan states that he called early this morning in Berkeley Square and received `a more hopeful acct. of our friend Lord Clyde-bad as he is I will not despair of his recovery.` About VG
GORDON CHARLES: (1833-1885) British Army officer and administrator, known as Chinese Gordon. A.L.S., C G Gordon, two pages, 8vo, Southampton, n.d. (`Friday`), to Mr. Smith. Gordon writes to his correspondent and encloses two letters (no longer present), one from Wilson and one from his cousin Inglow, commenting `When read burn them all & let the subject be buried`. Gordon further continues `I am sorry to say that owing to a mishap I was prevented in saying goodbye to Sir W. Gordon. You know there was Mr. Hozier & his wife & Sir W. wanted me to go with them which I could not do as I had a second class ticket, so I kept away from them thinking Sir W. would come & look for me, he never did, and you may imagine what I felt when I was whisked off without bidding him adieu. It was indeed a painful matter of reflection to me, as you may conceive. These things are no accident however, & they are our trials....The violent exercise has shaken me a good deal. CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. An excellent, large signed sepia 9.5 x 13.5 photograph of Churchill in a head and shoulders pose wearing a polkadot bowtie. Photograph by Harris and Ewing of Washington. Signed (`Winston S. Churchill`) to the lower border immediately beneath the image. An unusual image to find signed by Churchill. Some very light, extremely minor age wear to the edges, otherwise VG From Churchill`s appearance, and the photographers being based in Washington, it is likely that this photograph was captured while Churchill was in the American capital in March 1946. Having failed to be re-elected as Britain`s Prime Minister after the end of World War II, Churchill met with American President Harry S. Truman in Washington before travelling to Fulton, Missouri, on 5th March 1946. In the President`s home town, Churchill delivered his famous "Iron Curtain" speech to 40,000 people gathered at Westminster College. The speech, entitled The Sinews of Peace changed the way that the Democratic West viewed the Communist East and, as result of his use of the term iron curtain, the phrase became popularly recognized as the division of Europe between East and West. Many historians believe Churchill`s iron curtain speech marked the beginning of the Cold War.

HITLER ADOLF: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1934-45. D.S., A Hitler, one page, 4to, Fuhrerhauptquartier, 9th February 1941, to the Commander-in-Chief of the Army (Walther von Brauchitsch), on the printed stationery of The Fuhrer and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. The typed document, in German, states, in full, ‘I am making General of the Infantry von Stulpnagel, Chairman of the Armistice Commission, in accordance with the requset of the Commander in Chief of the Army, available for use at his disposal. I appoint Lieutenant General Vogl, Chief of the Army Control Commission, Chairman of the German Armistice Commission.’ Boldly signed at the foot by Hitler and countersigned by Wilhelm Keitel (1882-1946, German Field Marshal, head of the High Command of the Armed Forces). With blind embossed Nazi eagle and swastika. A document of interesting association. Carl-Heinrich von Stulpnagel (1886-1944) German General, a member of the July 20 plot to assassinate Hitler.
[GORING HERMANN]: (1893-1946) German Political and Military leader, a prominent member of the Nazi Party. Commander of the Luftwaffe during World War II. A silver serving tray previously belonging to Goring, the 9” diameter platter featuring a decorative ribbed border with four seashell relief designs and with Goring’s family crest engraved at the centre. Hallmarked to the base, numbered 800. Previously sold at auction by Mohawk Arms (Lot A-41, 1992) and kept in the Lattimer Collection of Third Reich autographs and memorabilia. [FRICK WILHELM]: (1876-1946) Nazi official, Minister of the Interior of the Third Reich, later executed for war crimes. A large, handsome ashtray previously belonging to Frick, the 7.5” diameter ashtray of a heavy cut glass design with a thick silver band around the upper rim. The silver band is engraved Dr Wilhelm Frick/Margarete Frick/Weihnachten 1935 and bears a hallmark numbered 835. Previously sold at auction by Charles Hamilton (Lot 154, Auction 123, 18th October 1979) and kept in a private collection until now. Some very light age wear and evidence of use, VG

An excellent vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Marble standing in a three quarter length pose at a tennis net holding her racket. Signed in bold blue fountain pen ink across a light area of the image with a lengthy inscription, `To Gordon, If you grow up to be as handsome as your Dad and as lovely as your mother-heaven help us girls-with sincere good wishes, Alice Marble`. Signed in bold, dark blue fountain pen ink across a light area of the image and dated 1943 in his hand.
