THE WATERLOO MEDAL. the first specific British campaign medal (included Ligny & Quatre Bras) and issued to survivors in all ranks (approx. 38,000 were struck); silver, 35mm. diameter, the obverse with named head of the Prince Regent, the reverse with winged figure of Victory - the name Wellington above, & Waterloo / June 18 / 1815 beneath (by T. Wyon, junr.), crimson ribbon with dark blue flanking stripes, original steel clip fitting, but replacement ring suspension; the recipient's name stamped on rim - 'William Wheeler, 3rd Batt. Grenad. Guards'. * the 3rd Battalion of the (then) First Foot Guards saw action at Quatre Bras; at Waterloo, with light companies initially posted at Hougomont, the remainder of the Battalion (together with the 2nd Battalion) formed the First Infantry Brigade (under Maj. Gen. Peregrine Maitland) on the Ridge - where their repulse of Napoleon's final onslaught, by the Imperial Guard, marked 'the beginning of the end'. In honour & celebration of this action they were immediately given the name 'Grenadiers', wore the bearskin headress (with flaming grenadier badge) -all adopted from their vanquished adversaries.
