These Chinese and Japanese designs would be a defining inspiration throughout his career. The present candlesticks are after designs by Lievre that were executed by the Barbedienne foundry and showcase the designer's trademark Chinoiserie elements, including elephant masks and coiling dragons.A very similar pair, only with a patinated body, was sold at Christie's New York, The Opulent Eye: 19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Works of Art, Ceramics, Glass and Carpets, 18 November 2014 Another pair based on the same design, again with different patination of the pear shaped body, was sold at Sotheby's Paris, Le Goût Français: Arts décoratifs du XVIIème siècle au XIXème siècle, 29 April 2014 ‡ Indicates that the lot is being sold whilst subject to temporary importation and that VAT is due at the reduced rate (5%).
