In burials, lamps served as apotropaic devices providing light to the deceased's journey through the increasingly alienated, gloomy, and dangerous Underworld. Inhabiting the forests of northern China, bears may have also protected the occupant. The word for bear (xiong 熊), is homophone for 'brave and powerful' (xiong 雄), and the 'Rites of Zhou' (Zhou Li 周禮), edited during the Han dynasty, refers to seasonal exorcist rituals involving the performer wearing a bear skin to drive away pestilences.Compare with a similar green-glazed lamp stand, dated Han dynasty, illustrated by S.Hayashiya and G.Hasebe, Chinese Ceramics, Tokyo, 1966, p.31, pl.25. ANGLO-CHINESE SCHOOL (LATE 19TH CENTURY)CantonOil on canvas, framed.44.5cm x 77cm (17.1/2in x 30.1/4in).Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Paul Mason Gallery, London.Acquired from the above at the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair, London, by the present owner in 1987.The present painting depicts a port view of Canton, now Guangzhou, as seen from the Honam waterfront. Situated at the mouth of the Pearl River, Canton had long been a flourishing trade city. Operating under the Canton System from 1757-1842, Canton would be the only city authorised by successive Chinese Emperors to trade with the West. The Treaty of Nanking in 1842 would see a number of other Chinese ports open to trade with the West and therefore the diminished monopoly that Canton had once held. The waterfront shown in this work would once have been home to the famous hongs of Canton, the hongs being the factories and trading sites for the various countries that operated out of this port. After having been destroyed by fire at the onset of the Second Opium War (1856-60), the hongs were never rebuilt and the waterfront developed as seen in this work. Chinese godowns and the city wall can be seen along with an array of shipping including sampans, junks and a British paddle steamer. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.comThe canvas has been lined. There are visible stretcher marks and craquelure throughout, which is stable. There is some minor rubbing visible along the left and bottom framing edges. There is a somewhat dirty varnish layer. UV light reveals retouching and infilling throughout the sky with some further retouching visible to the sea in the immediate foreground. Some of the retouching in the sky appears to have discoloured slightly and is just visible to the naked eye. Overall the work is in good stable order and ready to hang.
