Attributed to Edward Hayes RHA (Irish, 1797-1864), LAURA BELL, watercolour, framed and mounted, 34 x 28 cm, dated verso 'Dublin, 1849', light foxing to paper, repairs and chips to frame. From Wikipedia: Laura Eliza Jane Seymour Bell (1829-1894, married name Thistlethwayte) was an Irish-born courtesan of Victorian England. She was most notorious for the Nepalese Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana reputedly spending £250,000 on her. She later experienced a religious conversion and became a revivalist preacher on morality. Bell was born in Glenavy, Co. Antrim, later moved to Dublin where she became a successful courtesan. Bell is rumoured to have had an affair with Dr William Wilde, father of Oscar Wilde. In 1849 Bell moved to London, where she became known as The Queen of London Whoredom. Rich noblemen and dukes were entertained by Bell. She often drove in Hyde Park in a gilt carriage drawn by two white horses. It was here she met the Nepalese Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana. Rana installed Bell in a luxury house in Wilton Crescent, Belgravia, and showered her with gifts. There are stories that Rana paid £250,000 for one night with Bell, but it's far more likely that the sum was the total value of gifts given to Bell over the 90 days they spent together. This sum was underwritten by Lord Canning, Governor-General of India. When Rana had to return to Nepal, he gave Bell a diamond ring and a promise to fulfil her every wish as a parting gift. During the Indian Mutiny Bell wrote to Rana asking him to send troops to assist in the British during the Sepoy Mutiny. She enclosed the ring to remind him of his promise. Rana sent his troops. On 21 January 1852, she married Captain August Frederick Thistlethwayte, who lived in Grosvenor Square, London, and had an estate in Ross-shire, Scotland. Bell later found religion and became an Evangelist, and referred to herself as "God's Ambassadress". She hosted Evangelical tea parties for high society and aided London's prostitutes. In 1887, Thistlethwayte accidentally shot and killed himself (he habitually shot his revolver into the ceiling to summon his valet). Bell never remarried. Prime Minister William Gladstone and his wife became friends with Bell, and this friendship continued until Bell's death in 1894.

In that same year the car received a full respray (in its original green colour) which contrasts beautifully with the cream leather interior. Overall, this is a lovely example and is a very honest time warp car that has a low mileage of just 25,907 miles. The bodywork, paintwork and interior are all in good condition. There is little history with the car which was purchased from Kevin Odlum, and has been in storage since 2010. Its 4.2-litre straight-six is also reported to be running and driving, however the car will be sold with a recommendation for recommissioning prior to active use.Vendor Score Total: 78/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1978 Lincoln Town CarRegistration no. LIL 433Chassis no. 8Y82S913711Odometer reading: 61,216MOT: December 2021*Good example*Former wedding car*Known in the Lincoln Owners Club Footnotes:In 1970 the Lincoln Town Car was initially introduced as a luxurious trim package on the Lincoln Continental. It featured additional niceties such as plusher carpets as well as extended leather throughout the interior. The design of the Continental Town Car embodies that of American cars from the 1970s with its square angles and large grille, and its look was designed to match that of its competitor, the Cadillac Eldorado. This 1978 example is in very good condition and has previously been entered into shows as a testament. The car has also been previously used as a wedding vehicle, and is also currently known to the Lincoln Owners Club. There is some history equipped with the car, including its import documents. It's beige exterior colour with beige leather interior are both in good condition and are thought to be a period colour combination. It's 6.6-litre V8 engine is said to be running well. These American 'land yacht' styled cars hark back to a bygone era of comfort and offer an incredible relaxed driving experience as a result. This is a good and useable example.Vendor Score Total: 78/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. The car is overall solid and was imported into the UK from California in 2008. It's white paintwork with blue velour seating are both in very good order. 1988 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera TargaRegistration no. F197 MLLChassis no. WP0ZZZ91ZJS141127Odometer reading: 85,000 MOT Expiry: December 2021 *Sought after Carrera 3.2 G50 Targa*Low warranted mileage*Touring Spec*Large history file with Porsche service history Beautiful example of one of the greatest air cooled 911s. From a private collection this Porsche 3.2 Targa has been impeccably maintained and cherished by enthusiast owners from new. The car itself is also fairly unique, as it was specified from new in December 1988 as a 'Touring Specification'.More discreet, it contrasts to the much more common 'spoilers and flares' 'bankers bonus cars' if the late eighties. This non-sport specification includes the deletion of the front spoiler and whale tail boot lid, and includes the very rare 15' Fuch alloy wheels with slightly higher price tyres. The car is in an excellent condition, and the Guards Red paintwork still presents beautifully. The 3.2-litre flat-six engine has also been carefully maintained with a full Porsche specialist service history, and is paired with the improved G50 five-speed gearbox. This, combined with the electric black leather seats and 15' Fuch alloy wheels really give a sense comfort, but with no impact on the cars impressive performance. This example was also featured in 911 and Porsche World Magazine in 2014 where Specialist Porsche JournalistJohnny Tipler said: ' it has the best ride quality because of its tall tyres and 15-inch rims', thus proving that this combination strikes the ideal balance that's rare in a 911 of this era. The mileage is also relatively low at 85,000 miles, and there is a large history file that includes a fully stamped service book, original handbook package and kit. The original non-spoiler boot lid is also available with the car. This is a rare and stunning example ready to enjoy To view a video of this lot please click hereFootnotes:Vendor Score Total: 97/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I Coupé ProjectRegistration no. 7806 UKChassis no. 860418Odometer reading: 13,816MOT: Exempt*Early Series I rolling project*Matching numbers*Structurally sound*Ideal for restorationFootnotes:Ever since its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961, the Jaguar E-Type has made headlines around the world for not just its sheer beauty, but also its effortless performance. Its design has been described as perfect from every angle, and it harks back to an era long before safety regulation had an impact on car design. Its faired-in headlights, centred twin exhausts, independent rear suspension and all-round disc brakes were thought to be revolutionary features for a sports car at the time. With a price tag of just £2,250 (approximately £42,000 in today's money), the E-Type was also astonishingly good value, and as a result it was a great success for Jaguar. Presented is a rare opportunity to acquire an early 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I Fixed Head Coupe. Sold as a project, the car has been in storage for approximately 15-20 years and will require a full restoration. The mileage is remarkably low as a result, and the odometer shows just 13,816 miles. It's also reported to be moveable, and there is air in the tyres (the brakes are not seized). Sadly there is little history with the car bar its original buff logbook, however it comes from single ownership since 1971. It was originally finished in Gunmetal grey but was resprayed in the 1960s prior to the present vendors ownership to the current purple colour that you see today. Structurally the car is in good condition and is remarkably solid, however there is some rust appearing in places, such as on the NSR wheel arche and rear window surround. This is a matching numbers vehicle.Vendor Score Total: 26/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II 2+2 CoupéRegistration no. CYY 984HChassis no. PIR35920BWOdometer reading: 90,847MOT: Exempt*Restored in 2009*3 owners from new*Well maintained with good historyFootnotes:The Jaguar E-Type is one of the company's most well-known cars, and was famously labelled by Enzo Ferrari as 'one of the most beautiful cars ever made'. Production of the E-Type spanned 14 years from 1961 to 1975 in Series I, Series II and Series III format. This example is 1970 Series II car that is configured in Coupe 2+2 format, and is a well looked after example. It is documented that the first owner had it from new until 1991, where the second owner then purchased it and owned it until 2006 (both in Wales). In 2007 the car went straight to well-known and reputable Scottish Jaguar restorer John McAleese, who gave the car an extensive restoration. This included a body restoration (with respray), engine rebuild, new bonnet assembly, and new chrome with new wire wheels. Today the car is sitting at just over 90,000 miles and we are advised is running and driving well. The restoration was completed in 2009, and it's been well looked after and maintained up until 2017, but since then the car has been unused. The red paintwork and leather interior are in excellent condition. There a lot of documentation with the car including its V5 registration document.Vendor Score Total: 84/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Introduced in 1930, the Wolseley Hornet helped to build this reputation and was available in saloon, coupe and open top configurations. The Hornet was also available in a 'Special' configuration, which was a coach-built variation that was bespoke to a customer's choosing. This example is a 1934 Hornet Special that is powered by a 1,604cc six-cylinder engine which was only available in the Special. The car is in very good condition throughout and comes with an extensive history file. This includes multiple old pictures of the car, old hill climb passes, and various invoices and receipts. More recently it is recorded that approximately £6,000 has been spent on maintenance since 2011 (which included fitting new king pins and timing the carburettor). The blue paintwork is in average order and blue leather seats present very well and are well suited to the car. It was designed by renowned MG designer Syd Enever and featured a much more aerodynamic design whose shape still looks familiar today. Following its launch, the MGA proved to be a hit and over 100,000 were sold by 1962 in both 2-door roadster and 2-door coupe body styles. This 1958 roadster offers great potential as a project car and is finished in the iconic British Racing Green. The shell itself has been well restored and still presents well. It is also noted that the car's original 1500cc engine has been swapped out for a later MGB 1,800cc unit mated to an MGA gearbox. The steering rack has also been built. Offered with a new radiator, windscreen, bumpers and some other small items. 1978 Land Rover Series IIIRegistration no. ATW 371SChassis no. 90624489A*Former RAF vehicle*Unique Khaki green colour scheme*2286cc diesel engineFootnotes:Produced between 1971 and 1985, the Series III is an iconic Land Rover that helped pull the company through a turbulent period in UK economic history. Essentially a facelift of the popular Series II, the Series III offered improvements over its predecessor such as a modernised interior and a synchromesh gearbox. Series Land Rovers have also been popular vehicles with the British Military, and the Series III is no exception to this serving from the 1970s right through to the 1990s. This Khaki Green example is a former RAF vehicle, and has been re-imported to the UK from Holland by the vendor. If you look closely you can see the original RAF colour is still visible in some places. Overall, the interior is aged and tatty and could require further attention. There is little history with the car but the 2286cc diesel engine starts and runs well, and the running gear and brakes are in good condition. The suspension is also of sound condition. Overall the car presents well and has been partly restored, but still offers scope for improvement if desired.Vendor total: 45/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1932 MG J2Registration no. YY 5032Chassis no. J2141Odometer reading: N/AMOT: Exempt*MG J2*Good condition*Engine rebuilt in 1997*Extensive historyFootnotes:Launched in August 1932, the MG J2 was engineered with the enthusiast in mind. It was powered by a 847cc single overhead cam four-cylinder engine which, paired with a four-speed gearbox, could reach an outstanding top speed of 82mph. It's look was also unmistakably MG with its long squared bonnet, folding windscreen and chrome wire wheels. Over 2,000 units were sold between 1932 and 1934, and at a cost of just £199 it was excellent value, and as a result the J2 proved successful. This 1932 example is presented in good condition and comes with a large history file that includes its original buff logbook, old bills and various paperwork. The file also includes invoices for an engine rebuild by CRG Engineering (MG specialists) in 1997 and other mechanical works. Having been in its current ownership since 2008, the vendor has kept the car in excellent condition and has maintained it himself. Recent work on the car includes a new mohair hood that was fitted over the original frame in 2008. The vendor believes that the car was rebuilt in the 1980s with a replacement chassis. This is a good example of a classic pre-war British sports car.Vendor Score Total: 78/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. This 1998 example is a higher spec Bighorn model and has been imported from Japan. The Bighorns in particular are more desirable as they come equipped with the higher powered 3.1-litre diesel engine, and this example also features the rare Lotus handling pack. 1966 Triumph HeraldRegistration no. HEW 100D Chassis no. GA213937Odometer reading: 12,685MOT Expiry: N/A*Low mileage Herald*Lovely red colour scheme*Good history fileStyled by Giovanni Michelotti, the Triumph Herald was a popular and much loved car of the 1960s. Produced in saloon, coupe, convertible and estate body styles, the Herald was incredibly versatile, cheap and stylish. However, the Herald wasn't designed to be a sports car, but more of a comfortable cruiser – and was powered by 948cc engine, with 1147cc and 1296 units added much later. This 1966 1200 model car is an excellent example with an exceptionally low mileage of just 12,685 miles. The car is presented in a lovely red colour scheme with black fabric roof and black leather interior. The bodywork, paint and chrome and all in an excellent condition. The interior trim and leather also present well. The car is running and driving and as it should, and has a good history file. Heralds make fun and usable classics that are practical and easy to maintain, and this is a very good example.Footnotes:Vendor Score Total: 100/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. 1976 Porsche 911 Targa 2.7 SRegistration no. MHY 94PChassis no. 9116211656Odometer reading: 108,887MOT: Exempt*LHD US-spec example*Extensive recent history*Full engine rebuild in 2014Footnotes:For the 1974 model year, the Porsche 911 received its first design overhaul since its introduction in 1964. This included a raised bumper design with black plastic bellows, as well as a new red panel with the Porsche logo embedded between the rear light cluster. In 1974, the 911 was also available with a new 'ducktail' spoiler design, which was optional in Europe but became standard on all US-spec models. This 1976 Porsche 911S Targa is a US specification example that is equipped with the 2.7-litre 173bhp flat-six engine. It comes with an extensive recent history from its purchase in Pennsylvania by the vendor in July 2013. The vehicle was found to be in good condition with no signs of corrosion. Once the car arrived in the UK it was given to a trusted Porsche specialist WrightTune, who undertook significant work including a full vehicle check and an engine and gearbox service. It was also prepared for UK road safety laws, which included replacing the rear light lenses with European specification and head lamp glass with UK beam pattern. In August 2014 a full engine rebuild was also undertaken. This was due to smoke from the exhaust on over run and during hard acceleration. Following the rebuild the engine is now running and driving very well and as it should. Other work on the car includes a full Targa top refurbishment. There is good history with the car and it comes with its original owner's manual and service book. The service book is void of stamps however, so it is believed to be a replacement. The bodywork, paintwork and interior all present very well. This is an excellent and usable example of a modern classic Porsche.Vendor Score Total: 79/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH. Overall, it is in good condition and the Pastal blue exterior and blue leather interior both present well. AAB 976AChassis no. 3Y83Z134675Odometer reading: 94,000MOT Expiry: Exempt*60s Ford Thunderbird*Runs and driving well*Well presentedAlong with the Mustang, the Thunderbird is one of Ford's most desirable models. The car's life spanned eleven generations and was one of the company's most successful models. The Thunderbird was produced in a range of body styles, including coupe, convertible, and sedan – all with varying seating arrangements. The third generation Thunderbird was introduced in 1961 and spanned a 3 year production run, and was only produced in 2-door coupe and 2-door convertible variants. American cars from this era were incredibly innovative, and the Thunderbird is no exception to that with its swing away steering wheel and floating rear view mirror. This example is a 1963 model that's in a good condition. The car is presented in a dark maroon/purple colour scheme with white contrast roof that matches well with the cream leather interior. The bodywork, paint and chrome and all in a good condition, but the car could be brought up to a higher standard if desired. This is largely due to its handsome styling and powertrain – a 383 cubic inch (6.3-litre) Chrysler V8. This 1970 Interceptor is an older, restored example that is presented in silver with cream leather interior and black piping. The mileage is low with just 67,847 miles showing on the odometer. Overall, the car is in good order but it's now starting to show some signs of age. According to the history file it was once owned by the secretary of the Jensen Owners Club (who purchased the car from Appleyards). It is also believed to have been restored prior to his ownership (circa. 2000). The vendor has owned the car since 2017, however the car has not been used in recent years.
