CAPE OF GOOD HOPE entire letter dated 31 October 1844 to England arriving January 1845. Sent by Cpl Hy Smith en route to join his regiment in India. Drawn up in the prescribed soldiers concession manner countersigned by the commanding officer; soiled and damaged but a long interesting letter NB Corporal Henry Smith was in the 53rd Regiment (Kings Shropshire Light Infantry). The Regiment fought in the 1st and 2nd Sikh Wars. Smith was wounded at Sobraon, 10th February 1846, during the 1st Sikh war and later died of his injuries
