Albinus and his artist Jan Wandelaar used some ingenious methods to prepare the illustrations (...) with the aid of compass and ruler. In addition Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of light and mass to produce a three-dimensional effect. The most famous plate in the atlas depicts a skeletal figure standing in front of an enormous grazing rhinoceros, sketched by Wandelaar from the first living specimen in Europe, which had arrived at the Amsterdam zoo in 1741." Doré - at that time aged 22 - was driven by a patriotic impulse that launched himself into this iconoclastic story, willingly outrageous and fiercely parodic. POMOLOGY -- GILBERT, Charles. "Album pomologique". N.d. (before 1880). Collection of 9 odd vols., comprising 2 vols. w. manuscript descriptions of apples (532 and 534 numb. pp), 2 vols. w. manuscript descriptions of pears (528 and 522 numb. pp), and 5 lge-4° vols. w. c. 980 original drawings in colour of pears made by the author, all cut out on outlines and laid down on light blue paper (77; 76; 76; 76; 76 lvs. respectively). (Binds. worn and/or slightly dam., but in fine interior condition). NOTE: Charles Gilbert (1820-1890) came from a well-known family. Destined for a merchant's career, he learned several languages. His older brother Joannes Carolus Petrus was an oilcloth manufacturer. An uncle was an alderman. After the death of his mother in 1843, Gilbert inherited the 'Bleyckhof' in Oelegem, a former bleachery and country residence, owned by the Antwerp Gilbert family for generations. The inheritance allowed him to distance himself from the business world and retire. In this way, the way was clear for Gilbert to fully surrender to his passion: horticulture and pomology. "Op de nationale tentoonstelling van 1880 ontving Gilbert een gouden medaille voor zijn 'Album Pomologique', originele kleurenafbeeldingen en beschrijvingen van ca. 500 peren- en 100 appelsoorten. Deze unieke gegevens werden spijtig genoeg nooit gepubliceerd." (see 'Gilbert' on https://www.bestor.be). - Present are only the plate volumes 1, 4, 5, 6 and 13 devoted to pears (numbering on spines), presenting together well over 980 drawings of pears and cross sections of pears (on a 1:1 scale?), numbered and with their names on printed tickets/or in manuscript, and the 4 text volumes written in a legible hand. From vol. 6 unfortunately some 13 drawings were removed. - On Gilbert's life, see Ed. Lucas in 'Pomologische Monatshefte', 188, p. 321.

Nishapur was not the only centre of production for these types of wares, however it appears to have produced the widest range of designs (Oliver Watson, Ceramics from Islamic Lands, London, 2004, p. 247). An example featuring a warrior on horseback is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (C.294-1987). A very early Troika Doublebase vase, possibly by Sirota, painted geometric forms in colours over a dark slate grey ground, applied relief dots. Painted marks to the base - Troika St Ives, with Trident mark and monogram plus hand written label. 35cm high. Old repair or join line visible to the neck.We have looked at this under UV light and it does show the vase to have been restored. The break looks to run all the way through but looks to have been professionally restored to a good standard. As you will see from the extra images online, the join is visible on close inspection but there are no pieces missing.
ANTONIO NICOLO GASPARO JACOBSEN (DANISH/AMERICAN, 1850-1921)The Atlantic Transport Line’s steamer 'Massachusetts' calling for a pilot off Sandy Hook (for entry into New York)Signed, dated and addressed 'A. Jacobsen 1893 705 Palisade Av. West Hoboken n.j' (lower right)Oil on canvas29 x 49in. (73.5 x 124.5cm.)Built for the Atlantic Transport Line by Harland and & Wolff at Belfast and launched on 17th December 1891, Massachusetts was one of four near-identical sisters commissioned for the company’s profitable London – New York route. Massachusetts was registered at 5,673 tons gross and measured 445 feet in length with a 49-foot beam. With accommodation for 100 first class passengers plus steerage, she was powered by twin screws and could make 14 knots at full steam. After six successful years under A.T.L. colours, she and her sisters were bought by the U.S. Government for use as emergency troop transports for the Spanish-American War -which began in 1898 – and all were renamed for famous generals, Massachusetts taking the name of Sheridan. Her years as a U.S. troop transport ended abruptly in 1910 when she was wrecked by stranding off the Barnegat Light, New Jersey.original condition, old scattered retouching, patchwork in sea, needs to be relined, bad infilling in areas, paint thin to righthand side margin.

Dragon was one of the fastest ships of her day, capable of 29kts, she carried the Prince of Wales (briefly Edward VIII) to Canada for a tour in 1919, and supported the White Army in the Russian civil war and was part of the Special Service Squadron World Cruise, escorting Hood and Repulse 1923-4 with Fairburn as Captain. During World War II after sorties in the North Sea and Mediterranean, she was given to the Polish who ran her as a convoy escort and deployed her at the Normandy Landings where she was badly damaged by a manned torpedo and towed to the Mulberry harbour and sunk as a breakwater.

G. DELL (BRITISH, 19TH CENTURY)Clipper Ship 'South Australian' off Beachy HeadSigned and dated indistinctly 'G. DELL 186..' (lower right)Oil on canvas23¼ x 35¼in. (59 x 89.5cm.)Sotheby's London: Marine Pictures and Nautical Works of Art, 3 May 1995, lot 57.Exhibited: Burstow Gallery Brighton College, The Age of Sail and Steamship, 1982.Owned by the famous merchant house of Devitt & Moore of London, the beautiful composite clipper South Australian was built for them in Pile’s yard at Sunderland in 1868. Registered at 1,078 tons gross (1,040 net), she measured 201 feet in length with a 36-foot beam. Intended for the company’s successful Adelaide passenger trade, she was commanded from new by Captain David Bruce, an old ‘sea dog’ in the truest sense. A weather-beaten, grey-whiskered Scot with a game leg crushed by a runaway cask in heavy weather, he habitually wore a straw hat and puggaree*, and was widely regarded as the most colourful character on the Adelaide run. His three sons all served their time under him and each of them rose to command the South Australian later in her life. After a very successful career in which she achieved the reputation of being “a very fine sea boat with very comfortable accommodation….. for passengers”, she became one of the so-called ‘wool clippers’ in the early 1880s, her best-recorded passage home being Melbourne to London in the winter of 1883-4 in 98 days. Finally sold to Messrs. Woodside & Workman of Belfast in 1887, she was sunk after a collision with an unidentified vessel in a force 9 gale off Lundy Island on 14th February 1889 whilst on passage from Cardiff to Rosario (Argentina) loaded with railway track.* A puggaree (or pagri) is a light scarf worn around the hat to keep off the sun.puncture in seagull lower left, retouching throughout, relined, would benefit from a clean
