A Dutch engraved Royal armorial light baluster goblet, circa 1760, the funnel bowl engraved with the crowned Royal arms of England, above the inscribed motto ‘Dieu et Mon Droit’, the reverse engraved with seven arrows tied with ribbon, on a slender multi knopped stem above a circular conical foot 18cm diameter Note: the arms refer to the Princess Anne, daughter of George II, who married Prince William IV of Orange in 1734. The engraved device on the reverse represents the seven united provinces of the Netherlands.
A Dutch engraved light baluster armorial and ship goblet, circa 1750, the funnel bowl engraved with a three masted ship of 44 guns, sails set and sailors in he rigging, opposing a coat of arms surrounded by scrolling foliage and trophies of war, inscribed below the rim ‘T. Geluckig Vaaren nan T. Slands Oorlog Schip Boeken Roode’, supported on an angular knop above bearded and inverted baluster knops on a circular domed foot 25cm high Note: the inscription translates ‘Success to the voyage of the Boeken Roode’. The Boeken Roode was built in 1729 in Amsterdam for the Admiralty of that city. She was constructed by Thomas Davies, an English shipbuilder who came from Portsmouth and who also built ships for the German Emperor. In 1729 she was built as a 52 gun ship, but was refitted in 1747 with her armament reduced to 44 guns, and this glass therefore dates to after 1747. The Armorial engraving to the reverse is the Arms of Roos of Amsterdam and the goblet may, therefore, be to commemorate Dirk Roos’s promotion to Rear Admiral in 1748.
