HENRY VIII: (1491-1547) King of England 1509-47. A good, rare D.S., Henry R, as King, at the head, one page (vellum), slim oblong 8vo (23.5 x 11 cm), given under the King's signet at Windsor Castle, 2nd January 1514. The manuscript warrant is addressed to Sir Andrew Windsor ('To our trusty and welbeloved Ser Andrew Wyndesore, knight, keper of our great wardrope') and commands him to deliver unto Lord Curson fourteen yards of crimson velvet for a gown and as much black budge as shall suffice for furring the same ('We wooll and commaunde you that unto the lorde Kurson ye deliver xiiij yerdes of Crimson velvett for a gowne and asmoche blacke boogi as schall suffice for furring of the same gowne'). With an early ninteenth century filing annotation ('60') to the upper left corner and the blank lower left corner neatly excised. Some very light, minor age wear, VGAndrew Windsor (1467-1543) 1st Baron Windsor. English peer and politician, Keeper of the Great Wardrobe 1504-43. Windsor played a significant part in King Henry VIII's military expedition to France in 1513 and was present at the Battle of the Spurs (16th August 1513) after which he was among the first to be advanced as Knights Bannerets. In 1514 Windsor attended Mary Tudor, the King's sister, on her journey to France for her marriage to King Louis XII and signed the marriage and peace treaties with France in 1518. Windsor attended the Field of the Cloth of Gold summit meeting between King Henry VIII and King Francis I in June 1520. Sir Robert Curson (c.1460-1535) Lord Curson. English soldier and courtier at the court of King Henry VIII, and also that of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor. Curson was publicly proclaimed a traitor from the pulpit at Paul’s Cross on 21st October 1501, although astonishingly escaped punishment. In 1509 his annual fee was set at £400 and it remained so until 1520, when he (or his son Robert) were present at the Field of Cloth of Gold. Although he never became an English peer, his title Lord Curson appears to have been recognized at court from around 1513.

[EDWARD VIII]: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A late Victorian gilt brass carriage clock previously belonging to Edward, Prince of Wales and presented to him by his maternal grandparents on the occasion of his baptism, featuring five bevelled glass plates within four decorative columns, a swing handle to the top, and a white rectangular enamelled dial with Roman numerals marked H W Bedford, Regent Street, W at the base (slightly rubbed), and with a movement striking a gong. Accompanied by the original winding key. The brass borders to the top are engraved 'To Edward from his Grandparents the Duke and Duchess of Teck, July 1894'. An unusual piece of Royal memorabilia. The working condition of the mechanism is not known. Some light age wear, VGProvenance: Acquired by our vendor at an auction held by Drouot, Paris, on 20th April 2018 (their original lot label still attached) when they stated that the clock was gifted by the Duke of Windsor to his secretary.Francis, Duke of Teck (1837-1900) Austrian-born nobleman, husband of Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge (1833-1897) Duchess of Teck, whose daughter, Mary of Teck, married King George V to become Queen Mary. King George V and Queen Mary had six children, the eldest being Edward who was baptised in the Green Drawing Room of White Lodge on 16th July 1894.
LORRE PETER: (1904-1964) Hungarian-born American actor, remembered for his portrayal of Signor Ugarte in Casablanca (1942). Lorre also appeared in Alfred Hitchcock's British spy thriller film The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) in the role of Abbott. LAUPEPA SUSUGA MALIETOA: (1841-1898) King (Tafa'ifa) of Samoa 1875-87, 1889-98. A rare L.S., Malietoa, two pages, folio, Mulinu'u, 9th November 1891, to Henry C. Ide, in Samoan. The King states that he is in receipt of his correspondent's letter 'informing me that you had resigned your position as United States Land Commissioner in Samoa' further acknowledging that the resignation had been accepted by the President of the United States and a successor appointed, and remarking 'I am extremely sorry that family troubles have compelled you to resign a position you are so admirably fitted for. It has been a great pleasure to me to see the work of the Commission go on so smoothly and with such fairness to all parties concerned; my people feel that in you and your colleagues they had judges that would act fairly and fearlessly to all parties interested. I have no doubt your successor will be well worthy the trust his Government has placed in him and he must not think I mean otherwise'. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by a photocopy of a complete contemporary English translation. Some slight traces of former mounting to the inner edges of the central vertical fold of the bifolium, not affecting the text or signature, and with some light creasing, otherwise VGHenry Clay Ide (1844-1921) American judge, colonial commissioner and ambassador who served as Governor-General of the Philippines 1905-06. American President Benjamin Harrison had appointed Ide to be Presidential Commissioner to Samoa in 1891 (Ide's formal title was American Land Commissioner in Samoa) as one of three representatives, along with Germany and Great Britain, responsible for adjuticating land claims by foreigners in the Islands as provided for in the Treaty of Berlin (1889). Ide only stayed in the post six months, leaving Samoa on 12th November 1891.

[PRIZE OF WAR] : An interesting manuscript document, six pages, folio, Burgos, Spain, 11th August 1808, addressed to Marshal Bessieres, in French. The document comprises four pages listing the silverware units taken from the belongings of the chiefs of the insurgents as prize of war. The introductory letter signed states `J´ai l´honneur de rendre compte à Votre Excellence par les états ci-joints, de l´opération relative aux prises faites à Palencia sur les chefs des insurgés…´ (Translation: `I have the honor to report to Your Excellency through the attached statements, the operation relating to the captures made in Palencia of the leaders of the insurgents´) The pages describing the silverware are divided in three groups, `Argenterie d´Eglise – Argenterie de tables – Argenterie à l´usage de la chambre´ (Translation `Church silverware – Table silverware – Room silverware´), the lists including multiple items such as `Un calice doré – un tableau représentant la vierge – un bénitier…. Deux soupières, elles sont à double fond et ont des couvercles, 25 plats d´argent, 148 couteaux à manche d´argent… une montre d´argent, 11 paires de boucles d´oreilles, 2 crachoirs…´ (Translation: `A golden chalice – a painting representing the virgin – a holy water font…. Two soup tureens, they have double base and have lids, 25 silver dishes, 148 silver-handled knives... a silver watch, 11 pairs of earrings, 2 spittoons…´) An interesting and cleanly written document showing the reported prize of war during the Peninsular wars. Signed by Martial Daru (1774-1827) Quartermaster of the Imperial Guards in Spain. Very small minor age wear with uneven left edge as a result of its former light binding. G to VG Jean-Baptiste Bessieres (1768-1813) Marshal of France, Duc d´Istria. Killed in the battle field in Rippach, the day before the battle of Lutzen.With the outbreak of the Peninsular War in 1808, the year of the present document, Bessières had his first opportunity at independent command. He did well against the Spanish, scoring a crushing victory in the Battle of Medina del Rio Seco, but apparently proved slow and hesitant in command of a large force. Bessieres was thus soon recalled to lead the Guard Cavalry during Napoleon's invasion of Spain.
CATHCART CHARLES: (1721-1776) 9th Lord Cathcart. British Lieutenant General and aide-de-camp to the Duke of Cumberland, in which capacity he participated in the Battle of Fontenoy (1745) and the Battle of Culloden (1746). Cathcart later served as Ambassador from Great Britain to Russia 1768-72. L.S., with his initial C, one page, 4to, Grosvenor Place (London), 7th August 1776, to his son, William. Cathcart states 'I hear you dayly mentioned with the greatest applause' and continues 'What you & the Grahams so wisely say is the best judged possible, but a sea voyage changes the question. Pray be so so good as to tell them how much I am obliged to them for their kindness. I fancy you will find me very inaccessible when you arrive. I refer you to dear Charles', further remarking in a postscript that 'Every thing I wrote yesterday still stands in the same situation'. With integral address panel bearing a good red wax seal (some large areas of paper loss caused by the original breaking). Some light age toning and wear, about VGWilliam Cathcart (1755-1843) 1st Earl Cathcart. British General and diplomat who fought in the American Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars. Charles Allan Cathcart (1759-1788) British politician and military officer, younger brother of William Cathcart.
CALLAS MARIA: (1923-1977) American-born Greek soprano. A good vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Callas standing in a full-length pose in costume as Elvira from Vincenzo Bellini's opera I puritani. Photograph by Semo of Mexico. Signed by Callas in bold blue fountain pen ink to a light area of the background, 'To Lucas, Cordially, Maria Meneghini Callas', and dated London, 1953, in her hand. Some light overall surface and corner creasing, GCallas performed in I puritani at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico alongside Giuseppe Di Stefano in May 1952 and again at La Scala the following year.

Canning writes, in full, 'Miss. Canning happening to be here, I have begged her to communicate to Mrs. Leigh the sad, though not unlooked for intelligence contained in your letter of this morning. I need not say how deeply I sympathize with you in your affliction. With Mrs. Canning's thanks as well as mine for your kind attention'. A.L.S., Wellington, two pages, 8vo, London, 14th November 1826, to the Duchess of Riva (?), in French. Wellington writes, in full, ‘J'ai l'honneur de vous envoyer la suite de l'ouvrage de Button (?) que je desire que vous puissiez agreer; et j'espere que les livres sont relies de la meme maniere que ceux que je vous aviez envoye il y a quelque temps. J'espere que vous vous portez bien ainsi que Mons Le Duc de Rivas (?). Je vous prie de lui presenter mes compliments et de me croire toujours Madame la Duchesse votre tres fidele serviteur’ (Translation: ‘I have the honour to send you the continuation of Button’s (?) work which I would like you to accept; and I hope the books are bound in the same way as those I sent you some time ago. I hope you are doing well, also Monsieur Le Duc de Rivas (?). Please present my compliments to him and always consider me, Madame Duchess, your very faithful servant’). With blank integral leaf. Together with an unrelated autograph envelope signed by Wellington, addressed in his hand to the Earl of Jersey and signed (‘W’) with his initial to the lower left corner. With a red wax seal to the verso. A couple of very light, minor stains and a few creases, generally VG, 2Wellington’s correspondent may have been María de la Encarnación de Cueto y Ortega (1806-1885) Duchess of Rivas, wife of Angel de Saavedra (1791-1865) 3rd Duke of Rivas. The Duke, a Spanish poet, dramatist and politician, had served as Prime Minister of Spain for one day in July 1854 and was also the Spanish ambassador to Paris and Naples.

EDWARD VIII: (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. An early A.L.S., Edward, three pages, 8vo, York Cottage, Sandringham, 19th November 1911, to [Alfred Donald] Mackintosh. The Prince apologises for the long delay in writing to thank his correspondent for three charming books, explaining 'I was in London for a week....& went to Windsor for shooting after that. I only arrived here last night & found your kind present. The stupid people had not forwarded the parcel to me. I shall certainly read them in the order you say. Conan Doyle's books are always so good', and further sending news of his shooting activities 'we were only shooting cocks, & though there were not many to shoot each bird was high & took some killing. I hope to get a good deal of shooting here this winter' before concluding by referring to King George V and Queen Mary, 'I am afraid my parents had a very bad passage in the Bay. I heard from my father this morning who said that everyone had been ill; even the men. And the cruisers of the escort had seas right over them & had their boats damaged'. A good vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph by both siblings individually, the image depicting them walking outdoors together in full-length poses at an airport, each carrying Pan Am flight bags, as they prepare to depart for the United States of America on 27th April 1960. CHAPLIN CHARLES: (1889-1977) English film comedian, Academy Award winner. A wonderful vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of Chaplin, the image depicting him seated outdoors in a full-length pose, in costume as the Little Tramp, alongside actress Merna Kennedy, a circus rider and stepdaughter of her ringmaster, in a scene from Chaplin's silent romantic comedy film The Circus (1928). Signed by Chaplin in black fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image, also adding the film's title in his hand beneath his signature. Chaplin has further added the name of his co-star to the image, the surname running into a dark area. Signed photographs of Chaplin of this quality, showing him in his most famous screen persona, are scarce and highly desirable. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGThe Circus (1928) is the seventh highest grossing silent film in cinema history. Chaplin was presented with a Special Academy Award in 1928 for ‘acting, writing, directing and producing’ the film.
MORRISON VAN: (1945- ) British singer, songwriter and musician. Signed 8 x 10 photograph, the promotional Polydor image depicting Morrison standing outdoors in a full length pose surrounded by other musicians and with a church in the immediate background. Signed by Morrison in bold black fountain pen ink with his name alone to a light area of the image. A pencil note in the hand of a collector to the verso indicates that the signature was obtained in person at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Vienna. EX
GAUGUIN PAUL: (1848-1903) French Post-Impressionist painter. A.L.S., P Gauguin, one page, 8vo, Finistere (Breton), n.d. (c.1890), to [Albert] Aurier, in French. The artist writes, in full, 'J'avais demandé a Bernard de m'envoyer la “pleiade” et numero ou est votre “salon” et “le moderniste” concernant a qui m'interesse. Vous serez bien aimable de me l'envoyer ci inclus quelques timbres postes pour regler la depense approximative' (Translation: 'I had asked Bernard to send me the ”pleiade” and the number where your “salon” is, and “le moderniste” about which interests me. You will be very kind to send it to me, including some postage stamps, to pay the approximate expense'). With blank integral leaf (minor traces of former mounting to the head of the verso). A letter of good association. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Albert Aurier (1865-1892) French poet, art critic and painter associated with the Symbolist movement. Aurier's noted essays Les Isoles: Vincent van Gogh and Le Symbolisme en peinture: Paul Gauguin were both published in the Mercure de France in the early 1890s. Emile Bernard (1868-1941) French Post-Impressionist painter and writer, a friend of Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh and other artists.
BECQUEREL HENRI: (1852-1908) French physicist and engineer, the first person to discover radioactivity. Nobel Prize winner for Physics, 1903. A good autograph manuscript, unsigned, incorporating several explanatory drawings, two pages (written to the first and fourth sides of the bifolium), n.p., n.d. (circa 1895), in French. Becquerel's manuscript is entitled Historique des machines, and particularly concerns direct current dynamo-electric machines, and was most likely prepared as an aide-memoire for one of his first physics courses at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. Becquerel has listed the names of various famous inventors alongside the dates of their discoveries and summary notes, several with explanatory scientific drawings alongside, including Faraday ('1831 Anneaux de fer......d'une bobine'; Translation: '1831 Iron rings......a coil'), Pixii ('En 1832......aimants dans un disque bois mobile devant des bobines'; Translation: 'In 1832......magnets in a moveable wooden disk in front of coils'), Ritchie ('bobines mobiles'; Translation: 'moving coils'), Clarke, Nollet, Siemens, Wilde ('aimants et electro aimants'; Translation: 'magnets and electro magnets'), Ladd, Pacinotti, Gramme, Varley, Wheatstone, Alteneck and Edison. To the foot of the first page appear various scientific equations and drawings in pencil, most crossed through. A good manuscript featuring the names of many inventors and physicists who inspired and influenced Becquerel. F. Varley (1828-1883) English engineer particularly associated with the development of the electric telegraph and the transatlantic telegraph cable.Charles Wheatstone (1802-1875) English scientist and inventor who made many scientific breakthroughs during the Victorian era.Friedrich von Hefner-Alteneck (1845-1904) German electrical engineer, one of the closest aides of Werner von Siemens.Thomas Edison (1847-1931) American inventor of the electric light bulb among many other items.
MARCH FREDRIC: (1897-1975) American actor, Academy Award winner for Best Actor in 1931/32 for his roles as Dr. Henry L. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and again in 1946 for his role as Al Stephenson in The Best Years of Our Lives. Vintage signed sepia 8 x 10 photograph, an engaging close-up head and shoulders study of the actor. Signed in blue fountain pen ink by March to a light area of the image. VG
