Lot 396

DON DARE-DEVILOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Fine+ Folded Universal, 1925This killer stone litho one sheet features a heroic and resolute Hoxie as Jack Bannister, protecting the lovely Ynez Remado (Cathleen Calhoun) from the villainous Bud Latham (Duke R. Lee) in a tense standoff. This folded poster has edge wear with small edge tears and chipping. There is also light fold wear with separation on the three center point cross folds. Jack Hoxie (1885-1965) was a major Western star of the silent era. Unlike many of his contemporaries, however, Hoxie was a real cowboy, rodeo competitor, and ranch hand, having honed these skills during his formative years in Northern Idaho. His first leading role came in 1919 as the title character in Lightning Bryce, a 15-episode serial from Arrow Film Corp. His fame grew tremendously during the 1920s when he became a well-known and well-beloved star, as big as any of his Western contemporaries. As one of the pioneers of the Western genre in film, Hoxie's contributions to the medium cannot be ignored. It was Hoxie who helped shape the image of the upright, white-hatted working cowboy hero, and his influence can be seen in such later stars as Randolph Scott and John Wayne, the inheritors of his mantle. FLESH GORDONBritish Quad (30" x 40")Very Fine Rolled; Artist Sam Peffer Mammoth Films, 1974The striking and colorful British Quad poster offered here, measuring 30" x 40", features the outstanding work of well-known science fiction artist George Barr, whose work is famous for combining pen-and-ink line work with pastel watercolors for a vivid and unique appearance. A clean quad with only a few minor scattered crimps and light sporadic edge wear, including creasing and tiny tears. As should be evident from the title, Flesh Gordon was a campy, soft-core porn parody of the classic 1936 science-fiction serial Flash Gordon. What sets this film apart from most other porn parodies, however, is the presence of such future Hollywood special effects luminaries as Mike Minor, Greg Jein, and Rick Baker, as well as established stop-motion animators Jim Danforth and Dave Allen. This incredible infusion of talent gives the film impeccable quality that few adult films can boast. Not surprisingly, Universal, the studio that made the 1936 classic, initially objected to the film on the grounds of plagiarism, which explains the prominent disclaimer on the poster, "Not to be confused with the original "Flash Gordon." Flesh Gordon has developed a dedicated cult following in the intervening years and is now viewed more as a vintage burlesque-like parody than a routine pornographic movie. BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINAOne-Sheet (27" x 41"); Studio StyleNear Mint Rolled; Artist Drew Struzan 20th Century Fox, 1986The poster for John Carpenter's Big Trouble In Little China is the perfect amalgamation of everything that makes the film itself so memorable. Sorcery, mysticism, martial arts, good vs. evil, and Kurt Russell's bumbling would-be-hero Jack Burton, right in the middle of everything. With only some light minor sporadic edge wear and a small crimp in the lower left, this poster is in mint condition.John Carpenter's supernatural martial arts movie channeling action adventure was a commercial failure, but thanks to its impressive visuals and a brilliantly tongue-in-cheek performance by Kurt Russell as lunky action hero Jack Burton, it's since found a fervent following. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. LONE RANGER AND THE CITY OF LOST GOLD, THE (1958Six Sheet (81" x 81")Fine- on Linen United Artists, 1958The massive six-sheet offered here, mounted on linen and ready for display, perfectly captures the heroism of the Lone Ranger in a poster as big as his legend, with a striking image of Moore as the character with which he is most associated. This poster, now on linen, has had restoration to previous issues, including edge and fold wear with tearing, chipping, creasing, separation, and some light paper loss. There have been touch-ups to both fold wear and to sporadic spots and now the poster displays well.Clayton Moore is fondly remembered by an entire generation of fans as the Lone Ranger, the Masked Rider who roamed the plains with his Indian partner Tonto (Jay Silverheels), fighting for truth and justice in the old West. Armed with his signature silver bullet, which served as a reminder of the value of human life, the Ranger valiantly battled the forces of evil on both the small and big screens. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. Lot 492

JAMES BOND: LIVE AND LET DIEOne-Sheet (27" x 41"); Western HemisphereVery Fine- Folded; Artist Robert McGinnis United Artists, 1973An overall clean poster with only mild wear, including slight separation on the cross folds and fold line ends, soft corners, some sporadic edge wear, and general light scattered crimping. After Sean Connery retired from the role of superspy James Bond, the torch passed to Roger Moore, an actor known for his portrayal of wealthy adventurer and Robin Hood-like crusader Simon Templar in TV's The Saint, based on the novels by Leslie Charteris. Unlike Connery's brutal, gritty portrayal of 007, Moore's Bond was more dashing and urbane, with a wicked sense of humor to go with his license to kill. Some saw the change as catastrophic, fearing that the Bond franchise was veering into parody compared to the Connery classics. Still, for many, Moore defined the character through seven feature films between 1973 and 1985. The first of Moore's outings was the film, Live and Let Die (1973), set against a voodoo background in New Orleans and a distinctly urban environment in Harlem, and drawing more than a bit of inspiration from the spate of Blaxploitation films that were popular in the early 1970s. It was written by Leigh Brackett and directed by Robert Altman. Elliott Gould played the lead role of Philip Marlowe, who is portrayed in a very different way from the original novel. The story is set in 1970s Hollywood, which gives it a fresh new twist. Arnold Schwarzenegger also appears briefly in a non-speaking role as "Hood in Augustine's Office".This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. THE ITALIAN JOBOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- Folded Paramount, 1969A very clean folded poster with only faint general scattered crimping, light separation of the cross folds, and sporadic staple marks in the borders. In this sparkling British crime comedy, Michael Caine stars as Charlie Croker, a Cockney crook who, newly released from jail, decides to pull off the heist of a lifetime: the daring theft of $4 million in gold bullion being transported through Turin, Italy to make a downpayment on a new automobile factory. His outstanding performance as Croker, arguably the role for which he is best known, ignited his career. Since then, Caine has been one of the hardest-working actors on screen, often appearing in several films in a year. Likewise, this film, which was a massive hit in Great Britain - named one of the top 10 British films by the British Film Institute - and has become a true classic, celebrated for its unforgettable dialogue ("You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"), and one of the most spectacular car chases ever caught on film as three Mini-Coopers careen through Turin. THE COTTON CLUBSpecial Italian Poster (55" x 109")Fine+ Folded Orion, 1984While the imagery here for Francis Ford Coppola's The Cotton Club may be simple, the visual effect of both the trumpet and movie title on such a massive size via this special Italian poster makes for one truly memorable display. A folded poster with standard extra light bends running parallel with the horizontal fold lines, scattered creasing, some border edge wear including tiny tears and crimping, plus there are two tears, one only in the left lower border and the other a longer one on the left side center that goes into the black background - both are reinforced on the back with archival tape. But the poster itself has a clean image and is in decent condition.Francis Coppola transported audiences to 1930s Harlem with this crime drama focused on the musicians and dancers at a jazz club, where they mix with members of New York's underworld. Richard Gere stars alongside Gregory Hines, Diane Lane, Bob Hoskins, and Nicolas Cage. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. Lot 441

GO APE!Planet Of The Apes Film Festival One-Sheet (27" x 41")Fine+ Folded 20th Century Fox, 1974In 1974, this poster was used after the release of Battle of the Planet of the Apes, the last in the four original Ape movies, and just before the TV series release of only 14 episodes. This is the rarer of the two similar posters announcing the release of all four Fox features at a theater. The other poster is an advertising poster announcing the television series on CBS.While the ape image itself is untouched, there are other issues, including pinholes in the corners, as well as some in the borders and two in the lower credits. There is also scattered creasing, corner crimping, some light staining in the upper left and lower right borders, warping around all three vertical folds on the left side, off-center folding of the poster itself, and finally, a hand-drawn arrow in red marker pointing to the box for Battle for the Planet of the Apes.Over five movies, the saga of the Planet of the Apes (aka our very own Earth - spoiler alert!) took audiences on a fascinating time-loop journey via the planet's complete destruction in 1970 sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes and '70s America in 1971's Escape From the Planet of the Apes, to the not-too-distant future in '72's Conquest of the Planet of the Apes and '73's dismal finale Battle For the Planet of the Apes. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. HARLEM ON THE PRAIRIEOne-Sheets (2) (27.5" x 42" & 28" x 40.5")Fine+ Folded Toddy Pictures, R-1940sThe two one sheets offered here are two different styles distributed by Toddy Productions, a white-owned company that specialized in handling Black films. One features Jeffries and co-star Connie Harris, the other, likely from a later re-release, spotlights supporting player Mantan Moreland, no doubt capitalizing on the fame he attained as Birmingham Brown, chauffer to the title character in the Charlie Chan series, beginning in 1944. Both are spectacular examples of a page from motion picture history that is slowly but surely receiving the attention it deserves. The image area for both posters is very clean and bright. The first poster which features Matan Moreland under the title has some general fold wear, including tanning and light separation. Plus, there's chipping to both the lower cross fold and right side center border. The second with Herbert Jeffries above the title has general edge and fold wear, slight separation on the upper and lower cross folds, and chipping in the right center and upper left borders. There's also a folded long corner in the bottom left.Throughout the first half of the 20th century, segregated theaters that catered to black audiences by showing "race films," typically featuring all-black casts often, but not always, made by black directors and primarily financed by white-owned businesses (much like the Blaxploitation films of the 1970s). The films of pioneering black filmmaker Oscar Micheaux found a home in these theaters, as did countless other movies that existed outside the mainstream. Stars like Herbert "The Bronze Buckaroo" Jeffries, Moms Mabley, Pigmeat Markham, and Mantan Moreland (whose bulging eyes made him instantly recognizable) were able to step out of the limited roles they found in typical Hollywood pictures as servants, sidekicks, or comic relief, in movies aimed at an audience that welcomed them. It's estimated that more than 500 race pictures were made during the years of segregated theaters by approximately 150 independent production companies. Sadly, fewer than 100 of these fascinating films still exist today. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.

It is a very clean and overall presentable poster image with only general light scattered crimping, plus edge wear to the right side backed by some archival tape. When Steven Lisberger first saw the video game Pong, he was inspired to write a story that took place entirely within the software world of a mainframe computer. This story would eventually become the movie Tron (1982). One of the first films to use computer animation and graphics extensively, Tron quickly became a landmark in filmmaking technology. Starring Jeff Bridges, Bruce Boxleitner, and David Warner, the film received mixed-to-positive reviews on its initial release but has become a cult classic in the years since, spawning a sequel (Tron: Legacy) and a TV series (Tron: Uprising). After opening with a bravura rescue sequence at the palace of Jabba The Hutt, it lives up to the saga's title with an ambitious three-tier climactic battle, combining fierce starship dogfights, a forest conflict involving the teddy-bear-like Ewoks, and the ultimate lightsaber duel between Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and his father Darth Vader (David Prowse). This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. GODZILLA VS. THE THINGInsert (14" x 36")Very Fine Folded; Artist Reynold Brown American International, 1964The insert offered here features key art by renowned poster artist Reynold Brown, who was directed to obscure the "Thing," in order to build anticipation for the film, regardless of the fact that Mothra, the film that introduced the titular "Thing," had been released in America several years previously. Whether the giant question mark was his idea or came from the distributor as part of their brief to him is anyone's guess. At any rate, Brown was paid a mere $350 for his efforts in creating an image that has become iconic in the intervening years. For the collector of kaiju films, Godzilla pictures, monster movie paper, or just great poster art, the insert as offered here is perhaps the rarest format for the American release of this title. An insert with minor scattered creasing, plus some light edge wear including tiny tears and crimping, as well as a small crease in the lower left corner. The images are bright and clean.Released initially as Mothra vs. Godzilla (Mosura tai Gojira), this was the fourth film in the Godzilla franchise following the incredible success of King Kong vs. Godzilla (Kingu Kongu tai Gojira) two years previously. For this film, Toho Studios decided once again to feature their king Kaiju with another massive antagonist, this time with the giant moth that had debuted in the self-titled Mothra (Mosura) in 1961. This film represents a valid turning point for the franchise, as it marks the last time that Godzilla would appear as a "heavy," becoming a powerful defender of humanity with the next film, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (San Daikaijū: Chikyū Saidai no Kessen, literally Three Giant Monsters: Earth's Greatest Battle, 1964).This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. THE BOWERYOne-Sheet (27" x 40.5")Fine+ on Linen United Artists, 1933Offered here is the bright and colorful stone litho one-sheet on linen featuring a dynamic image of Beery against a bright orange background. Professional conservation has fixed previous issues on this Stone Litho poster, including fold wear, separation, tiny tears, and chipping and light staining in the borders. There have been sporadic touchups and both the borders and Beery's colored outline have been airbrushed, but the poster now presents nicely. This movie was released as part of a series of "Gay '90s" films, following the success of Mae West's steamy film She Done Him Wrong (1933). The story follows two rivals, Chuck Connors (played by Wallace Beery) and Steve Brodie (played by George Raft), whose competition reaches its peak when Brodie decides to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge to get the money he needs to open a saloon bigger than Connors'. This film also marks Lucille Ball's first appearance on screen, but her role is uncredited. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. STAR WARS: A NEW HOPEOne Sheet (27" X 41"); Style A, First PrintingVery Fine on Linen; Artist Tom Jung 20th Century Fox, 1977With the incredible popularity of this title and constant demand for this Tom Jung poster, there were four different printings of the posters. This poster is the first printing denoted by the 77-21/0 NSS note in the lower left corner. What's more, this is a very scarce rolled copy. Note that there were "bootleg" or knock-offs of this poster, but those are known by the hair in Skywalker's belt and other tell-tales. We guarantee this to the original first printing.A poster with airbrushing in all four corners from light chipping and pinholes and some minor sporadic scattered touchups, but otherwise the poster is very clean and presentable.George Lucas' ground-breaking space opera, which defied all expectations to change the film industry forever. JOSEF JERABEK PRAGUE SMOKED GOODS FACTORY AND HAM EXPORTCzech Advertising Poster (17.75" x 24")Fine Rolled c.1910A unique and detailed advertising poster from 1910, this original vintage Czech poster was for Josof Jerbek Prague Smoked Goods Factory & Ham Export. The poster has some wear, mostly in the borders, including sporadic and scattered light crimping and creasing, staining, discoloration, some surface paper loss, tiny tears, and a pinhole in the upper border. Plus, there have been light touchups to the lower border, one going slightly into the credits. And while there are a few light horizontal creases in the image itself, this piece presents very clean and bright.Although there's little to no documentation available regarding the Josef Jerabek company promoted here, it was, apparently, an important and well-established institution as a smoked goods factory and ham exporter, as the statement "Kaiserl., Konigl., Hoflieferant" ("Imperial, Regal, Purveyor to the Court") indicates. Regardless of its background, the 1910 Czech stone litho poster offered here is a marvel of turn-of-the-century design, with an image of a "modern" airship (similar in appearance to the Italian military aircraft that would be used as bombers to fight World War I) flying high over the factory. The TV poster has some light minor corner crimping on the lower corners. And the home video poster has wear in the upper and lower areas, a tiny tear in the upper center edge which has been backed with archival tape, and also has light scratches to all four corners with some slight crimping in the lower left corner. All three posters have scattered creasing, but all display beautifully. The autographs are authenticated and include an additional COA from Beckett Authentication Services. In 1978, Star Wars was allowed to be produced for television which resulted in the creation of the Star Wars Holiday Special. Initially, it was planned as a half-hour special but was eventually expanded to a two-hour movie of the week after ABC showed interest. The movie was also released for a limited international theatrical run and was retitled as Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. ECKSTEIN NO. 5 CIGARETTESGerman Advertising Poster (33" x 47")Fine Folded C.1930sA historic circa 1930s vintage German art deco advertising poster for Eckstein No. 5 cigarettes that puts the product front and center. The brand itself, which was always unfiltered, had been manufactured since 1854 and was discontinued in August of 2015, making it one of the oldest German brands. This bright poster has had light restoration work to fold wear and minor upper and lower cross-fold separations. There is also sporadic edge and fold wear, including crimping tiny tears, and some tanning. Another perfect poster candidate for linen backing. If you were a smoker in Germany between the years 1854 and 2015, there's a fair chance that you smoked Eckstein No. 5 cigarettes at one time or another. The brand was founded by German Jewish tobacco maker Abraham M. Eckstein in Gottingen in 1854. Eckstein's cigarettes were known for being unfiltered, which became less and less common after the broad availability of a machine developed in Great Britain that manufactured filter tip cigarettes and the promotion of the filter's health benefits beginning in the 1960s. The text on this poster, "Rund, dick, ohne Mundstuck," advertises the benefits of this brand, stating them to be "Round, thick, filterless ("without tips"). Although the poster is undated, the graphics and the price of 3 1/3 pfenning suggest that the poster is likely circa the 1930s.This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. Known as the "Gone With The Wind Style" due to the romantic embrace of Han and Leia dead center, similar to the epic pose of Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh, this poster by Roger Kastel is a throwback to Hollywood spectacle.Aside from some unseen light fold touchups, this poster is otherwise in mint condition on linen. The stunning sequel to Star Wars, directed by veteran helmer Irvin Kershner. Widely considered to be the best episode in the saga, it benefitted hugely from bringing in screenwriter Leigh Brackett (The Big Sleep, Rio Bravo) to co-write with Lawrence Kasdan, and also for its unforgettable final twist. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. THE GOONIESOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- Folded; Artist Drew Struzan Warner Bros., 1985Perfectly capturing the essence of what it is to be a goonie, this Drew Struzan "hanging" style poster has become synonymous with the movie for a reason. This poster has some slight wear along the fold lines, especially on the upper vertical and horizontal folds, including wrinkling and creasing, as well as a small smudge in the upper and lower right-side border. There's also scattered creasing, two light extra horizontal bends above and below the center horizontal fold, and pinholes, two left and three right, in the upper corner borders. One hole in each side has a minor pin pull.Combining the talents of Richard Donner (director), Chris Columbus (writer), and Steven Spielberg (story), The Goonies is a kids' adventure film that hasn't aged a day, featuring pirate treasure, deadly traps, and dangerous criminals. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MANLobby Cards (2) (11" x 14")Fine Universal, 1943Here are two exceptional lobby cards, one featuring the Wolf Man in full Jack Pierce-applied make-up, the other spotlighting Talbot and Maleva the Gypsy Woman (Maria Ouspenskaya) as well as Lugosi's Monster. The Lon Chaney Jr. as The Wolf Man feature card has light smudges to the left border, small closed-edge tears, and soft corners, with minor surface restoration to the darkened area visible in raking light. The other card has multiple pinholes, paper loss, and a tear near the upper border with paper tape repair on the verso. In the movie, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943), the lab-created creature battles the supernatural beast-man. Bela Lugosi plays the Monster, a role he had previously turned down in 1931, and Lon Chaney, Jr. plays the lycanthrope Larry Talbot, which he had created in 1941's The Wolf Man. This film was the first time that a larger Universal "monsterverse" was hinted at. Although the public's reception to the movie was lukewarm, Universal decided to create other monster pairings, which eventually led to the franchise's end in 1948 with the release of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. Today, however, fans have largely changed their opinion of Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman. Even though it was deliberately made for a younger audience than the 1930s films, it is now considered a fitting addition to the proud history of Universal's monsters. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. This is a folded version of the Australian one-sheet.A poster with an image in terrific condition with only some light extra folding alongside some of the regular folds and a slight bit of tanning in the upper and lower white areas that can only be seen from close-ups. Otherwise, the poster is very presentable. SHADOWSOne-Sheet (27" x 41"); Style AFine+ Folded Preferred Pictures, 1922This gorgeous style A stone litho not only features Lon Chaney in a role that contributed to his being labeled as "The Man of a Thousand Faces."Unrestored, this outstanding style A stone litho one sheet is likely the only surviving one sheet from this movie. The poster has light edge and fold wear, a few micro-tears and chips in the borders, slight fold separation, and thin dust shadows. There are a few strips of archival tape on the verso.Lon Chaney demonstrates his remarkable skill with character makeup in this film, in which he transforms himself into a humble, stoop-shouldered Chinese laundryman named Yen Sin. This was his most elaborate make-up to date - taking more than two hours to apply - one that would only be surpassed in the next year when he created the look of Quasimodo, the deformed bellringer in The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923). The film opened to rave reviews by critics, who hailed it as Chaney's best performance of his career. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. TO HAVE AND HAVE NOTInsert & Snipe (14" x 36")Very Fine on Paper Warner Bros., 1944A spectacular insert on paper featuring a beautiful image of the two stars demonstrating the chemistry for which they were famous, complete with a credit snipe that emphasizes the director's name, Howard Hawks. With a few light creases, this insert has had much of the white background airbrushed, not including in the upper portion beyond the top of Bogart's name. There are only sporadic touch-ups in the image itself. It now presents perfectly. The additional snipe has slight wear to the upper and right side edges, including tiny tears, small chips, and light crimping. Lauren Bacall was only 19 when she appeared in this role based on an Ernest Hemingway novel, opposite the 44-year-old and divorced Bogart twice. Nevertheless, the pair fell in love during the production of this film and married as soon as Bogart secured a divorce from his third wife, Mayo Methot, a union that lasted until he died in 1957. Critical response to the film was largely unflattering, comparing the picture unfavorably to Bogart's earlier film, Casablanca (1942), and criticizing it for its divergence from Hemingway's story. NIGHT TO REMEMBER, ABritish Three Sheet (40" x 79")Fine+ Folded Rank, 1959This clean, bright 3 sheet's panels are glued together, and it exhibits minor fold wear, including some chipping in the upper and cross folds, light smudging in the white borders, and sporadic creasing. Walter Lord's best-selling 1955 book, A Night to Remember, served as the basis for the depiction of Titanic's last tragic night and the events leading up to it. DONALD DUCK IN LION AROUNDOne-Sheet (27" x 41")Very Fine- Folded RKO, 1950 This Technicolor masterpiece is well represented here by a beautiful one sheet capturing the moment in which Donald realizes that Louie is a real mountain lion and not his disguised nephews, and that his violent temper has once again gotten him in big trouble. This poster has mostly minor issues to lower areas, including light fold and edge wear and slight lower cross-fold separation. JAMES BOND: YOU ONLY LIVE TWICESubway (48" x 29")Fine+ on Linen United Artists, 1967This is a real mystery for most James Bond collectors, as it has a small numeral 2 in the lower left corner. It does not appear to be part of a larger poster or none that we can find a record of and we speculate that it was perhaps a "wilding" poster to be used in cities to be pasted on walls and surfaces or to paste over a larger poster for the title. Please let us know if you know differently. This very scarce poster was folded and has been professionally restored. There was some fold wear and small chips. There was some chipping to the right border as well as a small chip from the upper left corner. The left and upper border have been airbrushed, as well as some light airbrushing to cross folds. With a script by Roald Dahl, the fifth James Bond movie was the first to depart drastically from its Ian Fleming-penned source material.
