[Bage, Robert]. Man As He Is. A Novel, 4 volumes, 1st edition, Minerva Press, 1792, bound without half titles, a few minor spots and light marginal toning, armorial bookplates of Kinnaird, contemporary half calf, spines with red and green labels and gilt decoration, a little rubbed, 12mo Robert Bage (1730-1801) was a paper-maker and Quaker friend of Erasmus Darwin. Inspired by the American and French revolutions his novels reflected his desire to change contemporary attitudes through strong support for women's rights, and opposition to slavery, cruelty, war and duelling. Man As He Is is his fifth novel, the first being Mount Henneth, published in 1781. (4)

Gunpowder Plot. A True and Perfect Relation of the Whole proceedings against the late most barbarous Traitors, Garnet, a Jesuite, and his Confederats: Contayning sundry speeches delivered by the Lords Commissioners at their Arraignments, for the better satisfaction of those that were hearers, as occasion was offered; The Earl of Northamptons Speech having bene enlarged upon those grounds which are set downe. And lastly all that passed at Garnets Execution, Robert Barker, 1606, title with woodcut headpiece and vignette, a few leaves close-trimmed at top margin shaving a few headlines, some light soiling, endpapers browned, later morocco-backed boards, small 4to STC 11619a. Variant issue with cancel title and four lines in the imprint. Jesuit priest Henry Garnet was accused of having knowledge of the Plot from Robert Catesby and not disclosing it to the authorities. He admitted hearing details of the Plot from fellow jesuit Oswald Greenway, but at confession, which prevented him revealing it. Found guilty, he was sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered, but due to a sympathetic crowd pulling on his legs after being turned off the gibbet he did not suffer the remainder of his sentence.
