Lot 588

POLE REGINALD: (1500-1558) English cardinal of the Catholic Church, the last Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury 1556-58 during the Counter Reformation. A rare L.S., Reg Carlus. Polus, with a few additional words in his hand, two pages, 4to, Avignon, 25th January 1539, to Cardinal Farnese, in Latin. Pole announces his safe arrival in Avignon and informs his correspondent that he was at Carpentras the previous day, where he had the opportunity to visit Jacopo Sadoleto, 'and I leave it to Your Serene most Reverend and Illustrious the thought of how lovingly it was to see him; I have had great consolation to find that the Lord has blessed him….and it is certainly an admirable thing as far as I have been able to learn and see the love and reverences that all the people bring to him' and further informing Farnese that he will continue to update him with all of his progress as he travels. With integral address leaf, bearing the original paper seal. Some very light, minimal age wear, VGAlessandro Farnese (1520-1589) Italian cardinal and diplomat and a great collector and patron of the arts. Grandson of Pope Paul III, Farnese was appointed as his principal secretary in 1538 and managed most of the Papal business, with the assistance of Monsignor Marcello Cervino, until 1549.Jacopo Sadoleto (1477-1547) Italian Catholic cardinal and counterreformer, noted for his correspondence with, and opposition to, John Calvin. Sadoleto was Bishop of Carpentras from 1517 until his death. At the time of writing this letter Pole had been attainted in absentia following his disagreement with King Henry VIII, to whom he had not offered his support in his divorce from Catherine of Aragon, despite the King's offer of the Archbishopric of York or the Diocese of Winchester.

HUC EVARISTE REGIS: (1813-1860) Abbe Huc. French Catholic priest, Lazarite missionary and traveller, famous for his accounts of Qing-era China, Mongolia and Tibet. A.L.S., E. Huc, two pages, small 4to, Paris, 7th October 1838, to his father, in French. Huc writes to his father in an evangelic manner, 'Comme je remercie le bon Dieu du tout mon coeur de ce qu'il vous a enfin determine a chercher le bonheur par une voie si sure et si infaillible. Je vous felicite aussi d'avoir donne votre confiance a Mr. Saurimont, c'est un pretre qui je connais a Metz et je sais qu'il jouit a une experience contournee d'une grande piete et beaucoup de savoir. Oh! mon bon et tendre pere, permettez a votre enfant de vous crier: Courage! Oui, courage! et vous saurez bientot, si vous ne l'avez deja, combien il est doux de servir, le bon Dieu sans restriction. je vous ai dit dans mes dernieres lettres que j'avais plus d'une fois verse des larmer en pensant a vous; j'en ai verse encore quand vous m'avez annoncee cette heureuse nouvelle que j'attendais depuis si longtemps, mais quelle difference! avant c'etait la douleur qui me fesait pleurer et maintenant c'est la joie c'est le bonheur!' (Translation: 'How I thank the good God with all my heart for having finally determined you to seek happiness by such a sure and infallible way. I also congratulate you for having given your confidence to Mr. Saurimont, he is a priest whom I knew in Metz and I know that he enjoys a circumvented experience of great piety and a great deal of knowledge. Oh! my good and tender father, allow your child to cry to you: Courage! Yes, courage! and you will soon know, if you haven't already, how sweet it is to serve the good God without restriction. I told you in my last letters that I had more than once shed tears thinking of you; I poured more when you told me this happy news that I had been waiting for so long, but what a difference! Before it was pain that made me cry and now it's joy, its happiness!'), further discussing Theophile and also commenting 'je suis sur le point de prononcer les Saints voeux, c'est a dire de m'attacher pour toujours a la congregation. Je pense, mes bon parents, que vous allez prier raide le bon Dieu pour moi' (Translation: 'I am about to pronounce the Holy Vows, that is to say to attach myself forever to the congregation. I think, my good parents, that you are going to pray to the good Lord for me'). With integral address leaf in Huc's hand (two small areas of paper loss caused by the original breaking of the seal). Some light age wear, VGIn 1837 Huc, aged 24, entered the Congregation of the Mission (better known at the time as 'Lazarites') at their priory in Paris. He took his holy orders as a priest shortly afterwards, as the present letter indicates.

LANZA MARIO: (1921-1959) American tenor and actor. Vintage signed 7 x 9 paper stock image, evidently removed from a programme, of Lanza in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in blue ink with his name alone to a light area at the head of the image. Neatly mounted to card and with some surface creasing and neat tears and a small area of paper loss to the upper left corner. FR

[GASTRONOMY]: MONSELET CHARLES: (1825-1888) French journalist, novelist, poet and playwright. Founder and editor-in-chief of Le Gourmet newspaper in 1858, Monselet was known as 'the king of the gastronomes' by his contemporaries. A.L.S., Charles Monselet, one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d. ('Jeudi') to 'Mon cher confrere', in French. Monselet writes on a subject he is passionate about, gastronomy, and organises a banquet, stating, in part, 'M. Goyard, que je n'ai pas trouve hier chez lui a 6 heures, sort de chez moi: Il se charge du festin pour 2 fr. par bouche, vin compris. Il a promis de faire de son mieux, et j'espere qu'il s'attachera a tenir parole. Vous devriez lui ecrire que nous ajouterons 5 fr. pour les legumes et les cigares, afin de n'avoir plus a nous occuper de quoique a soir.....Lundi, a sept heures. Rappelez a Mr. Goyard que nous demandrons le grand salon at son attenant' (Translation: 'Mr. Goyard, whom I did not find at his house yesterday at 6 o'clock, leaves my house: He takes charge of the feast for 2 fr. per mouth, wine included. He promised to do his best, and I hope he will stick to his word. You should write to him that we will add 5 fr. for the vegetables and the cigars, so that we no longer have to worry about anything on the evening…..Monday, at seven o'clock. SWETCHINE SOPHIE: (1782-1857) Russian mystic, famous for her salon in Paris which was considered remarkable for its high levels of courtesy and intellect. A.L.S., S de Swetchine, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Paris?), n.d. ('Lundi'; c.1850), to a gentleman, in French. Swetchine seeks an audience, remarking 'une autre que moi, avec moi, vous temireierait de votre indulgence' (Translation: 'another than me, with me, would temper you of your indulgence'). With blank integral leaf. Some light staining, predominantly at the foot of the page, only very slightly affecting the text and signature. About VG

FRANKLIN JANE: (1791-1875) English philanthropist, the second wife of the explorer John Franklin. Following her husband's disappearance in search of the Northwest Passage, Jane Franklin financed and supported several expeditions to determine his fate. Fine, dark ink signature ('Jane Franklin') and place and date, Upper Gove Lodge, 25th November 1865, in her hand on an 8vo sheet of personal monogrammed mourning stationery. With blank integral leaf. One very light, minor stain, only very slightly affecting the signature, VG

LA PALISSE JACQUES DE: (1470-1525) French nobleman and Marshal of France, created Grand Master of France in 1511. La Palisse gave his name to Lapalissade, a comical truism. An extremely rare D.S., Thabannes, as Lord of Chabannes, one page (vellum), slim oblong 4to (34 x 8 cm), n.p., 15th May 1507, in Middle French. The manuscript document is in the form of a receipt in which La Palisse acknowledges having received from Jehan Serpin, Receiver General of His Majesties Finances in Burgundy, 'La some de Six vings livres tourn. pour le Revenu du grenier a sel de Semur en brionnois' (Translation: 'The sum of sixty pounds tournois for the income of the salt cellar of Semur-en-Brionnoais') La Palisse's signature is a little faded although still reasonably legible. Small area of loss to the lower right edge, one neat cut, a couple of very small, minor holes and some light dust staining, about VG

LEPAUTE JEAN-ANDRE: (1720-1789) French clockmaker who held the brevet horlogers du Roi. A rare manuscript D.S., Lepaute, one page, oblong 8vo, Paris, 14th April 1765, in French. The document is a receipt issued by Lepaute to Monseigneur le Duc Dancequne (?) for the sum of one thousand livre in full payment for a clock. With a further note in Lepaute's hand at the base confirming that he will resend the Duke the invoice for the same sum. Also bearing a short note, signed with initials, in an unidentified hand. With blank integral leaf. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG

Geronimo signs for the President of the Wells Fargo Express Company GERONIMO: (1829-1909) Bedonkohe Apache leader and medicine man, noted for his raids and related combat actions during the Apache Wars (1849-86). An excellent, bold pencil signature ('GERONIMO') to the verso of the personal printed oblong 12mo Visiting Card of Burns Durbin Caldwell and featuring his printed name to the centre of the recto. Accompanied by the original folio page to which the visiting card was originally loosely affixed. The page, removed from a contemporary album, features a vintage illustrated newspaper clipping laid down to the centre, the text stating, in part, 'From Warpath to Poker Table - Old Geronimo, the famous fighting chief of the Apaches, is now a prisoner of the government at Port Sill…..it is said that the wily old chief has developed such skill at bluffing and “playing a hand” that he is rapidly getting rich…..Recently Geronimo deposited $1425 in a bank at El Reno as the result of a single week's play'. Autographs of Geronimo are extremely rare and highly desirable. Some light age wear and two small traces of former mounting to the upper corners, not affecting the signature. About VG Burns D. Caldwell (1858-1922) American businessman, president of the Wells Fargo Express Company and chairman of the board of the American Railway Express Company. Geronimo attained celebrity status during his lifetime and he became a regular attraction at events and fairs including the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo, New York in 1901, the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 and Pawnee Bill's Wild West Shows, where he appeared under Army guard. Geronimo dressed in traditional clothing on such occasions, posed for photographs, provided autographs and souvenirs, and sold his crafts.  The present signature links two of the major household names of America's Wild West - Geronimo and Wells Fargo, the latter being the company that handled express service to western states, and were often robbed.  Provenance: From the autograph collection of Frank Dyche (d.1944) and his wife Grace Scripps Dyche (1863-1924). Frank Dyche, a prominent Chicago attorney, married Grace Scripps in 1896. Grace was the daughter of John Locke Scripps (1818-1866), editor of the Chicago Tribune, and his wife Mary E. Scripps (1825-1866). The Scripps have been described as 'one of the oldest and most influential families of American journalism' who 'occupied a unique place in nineteenth-century America'.

CROWLEY ALEISTER: (1875-1947) English occultist, philosopher, ceremonial magician, poet, painter, novelist and mountaineer. T.L.S., A. Crowley, one page, oblong 8vo, Collegium ad Spiritum Sanctum, Cefalu, Sicily, 2nd November 1920, to G. Bell & Sons. Ltd. Crowley commences his letter stating 'Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law', continuing to thank his correspondents for their letter and remarking 'You will by now have received the balance of the account due to you. I have transferred my interests in the stock to the Collegium ad Spiritum Sanctum and authorize you to deliver same to their order'. Crowley concludes his letter writing 'Love is the law, love under will'. Rare. Some light creasing and minor age wear to the edges, about VGGeorge Bell & Sons were a London book publishing house established in 1839.Crowley's letter was written from the Abbey of Thelema, a small house used as a temple and spiritual centre (as well as a type of magical school) in Sicily, which he had opened in 1920. The commune, which has been described as a type of 'anti-monastery', was designated by Crowley as 'Collegium ad Spiritum Sanctum', a College towards the Holy Spirit.

LACENAIRE PIERRE FRANCOIS: (1803-1836) French criminal, murderer and poet. A rare A.L.S., Lacenaire, one page, 8vo, La Conciergerie (Paris), 26th December 1835, to Monsieur Le Serrurier, in French. Lacenaire responds to his correspondent's request and states that he would be happy to meet him 'si vous voulez avoir la complaisance d'aller voir M. Allard, chef du service de surete, a son bureau, il se chargera de vous  introduire aupres de moi. Je viens donc vous prier aujourd'hui, lorsque vous aurez un moment a disposer, de le sacrifier en ma faveur. Je serais bien aise de vous revoir' (Translation: 'if you would like to have the kindness to go and see M. Allard, head of the security, at his office, he will undertake to introduce you to me. I therefore come to beg you today, when you have a moment to spare, to sacrifice it in my favour. I would be glad to see you again'). Some very light age toning and a few minor wrinkles to the corners, caused by the remnants of previous mounting to the verso. About VGThe present letter was written very shortly before Lacenaire was executed by guillotine, at the age of 32, on 9th January 1836 in Paris.

PIERREPOINT ALBERT: (1905-1992) English hangman, responsible for the execution of 200 people who had been convicted of war crimes in Germany and Austria, as well as high treason, including William Joyce (Lord Haw-Haw). Pierrepoint also executed a number of high-profile murderers including John Haigh, John Christie and Ruth Ellis. Signed and inscribed colour 3.5 x 5 photograph of Pierrepoint seated in a half-length pose. Signed in blue ink to the verso, 'To Fred & Sue, with all our love and best wishes, Albert Pierrepoint'. One light, minor stain to the upper half of the image, otherwise VG

WEISSMULLER JOHNNY: (1904-1984) American actor, famous for his portrayal of Tarzan in twelve feature films from 1932-48. A former swimmer, Weissmuller one five Olympic Gold medals at the 1924 & 1928 Olympic Games. Vintage signed and inscribed 6 x 8.5 photograph of Weissmuller in a full-length pose walking outdoors arm-in-arm with his fourth wife, Allene Gates. Signed by Weissmuller in bold black fountain pen ink to the image, 'For Len from your friend Johnny Weissmuller', and also signed ('Allene Gates Weissmuller') in bold black fountain pen ink by his wife, whom he was married to from 1948-62. HOOVER J. EDGAR: (1895-1972) American law enforcement administrator, the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) 1924-72. T.L.S., J. Edgar Hoover, one page, 4to, Washington D.C., 9th October 1964, to Gene Baker, on the printed stationery of the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Hoover acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter inviting him to address the Cathedral Luncheon Club and the Ambassadors Club, continuing 'While I do wish it were possible to accept your kind invitation, the pressure of my official schedule, coupled with the numerous matters which arise daily demanding my immediate attention, precludes my filling these engagements'. DENON DOMINIQUE VIVANT: (1747-1825) French artist, writer, diplomat and archaeologist who was appointed as the first director of the Louvre museum by Napoleon following the Egyptian campaign of 1798-1801. L.S., Denon, two pages, folio, Paris, 14th March 1812, to Carlo Lasinio, on the printed stationery of the Musee Napoleon featuring an engraved vignette of a medallion at the head, in French. Denon acknowledges receipt of his correspondent's letter and continues 'J'en ai remis de suite une copie a S. Ex. le Ministre de l'Interieur qui m'a promis qu'il allait vous ecrire pour vous temoigner sa satisfaction sur l'ouvrage que vous venez de publier & sur le zele que vous avez mis a reunir tant d'objets precieux dans le campo santo. Vous pouvez etre persuade, Monsieur, que j'ai fait connaitre comme ils meritent de l'etre les services que vous avez rendus & que je ne perdrai jamais de vue les occasion de les faire valoir aupres de l'autorite' (Translation: 'I immediately gave a copy to His Ex. the Minister of the Interior who promised me that he would write to you to show you his satisfaction with the work you have just published and the zeal with which you have put together so many precious objects in the Campo Santo. You can be persuaded, Sir, that I have made the services you have rendered known as they deserve to be known, and that I will never lose sight of the opportunities to assert them before the authorities'), further stating 'Son Exc. le Ministre de l'Interieur, sur ma proposition, vient d'ordonner qu'il serait envoye a Pise plusieurs beaux platres moules sur l'antique pour son Lycee, a fin de l'indemniser des tableaux que j'ai demande pour Paris. Ce present equivaudra a la cession que cette ville fait, se sera pour elle d'un plus grand interet que ces tableaux auxquels elle attachait si peu de prix' (Translation: 'His Exc. the Minister of the Interior, on my proposal, has just ordered that there should be sent to Pisa several beautiful antique plaster casts for the Lyceum, in order to compensate them for the paintings I requested for Paris. This gift will be equivalent to the cession that this city makes, and will be of greater interest to it than the paintings to which is attached so little value'). Several passages at the conclusion of the letter have been lightly underlined in pencil in the hand of Lasinio, the engraver noting in the margin 'Bel compenso per Dio!' (Translation: 'Beautiful compensation, by God!). With integral address leaf. A letter of interesting association. Some light creasing and minor staining to the edges, only very slightly affecting a few words of text and not the signature, GCarlo Lasinio (1759-1838) Italian engraver who was appointed conservatore of the Camposanto in Pisa in 1807. Lasinio made considerable efforts to protect the Camposanto and its frescoes from ruin during the destructive period of the Napoleonic Wars and in 1812 commenced his influential book of etchings, Pitture a fresco del Campo Santo di Pisa, which recorded the frescoes in the Camposanto.

ELGIN EARL OF: (1766-1841) English nobleman, soldier, politician and diplomat, known for his controversial procurement of marble sculptures (the Elgin Marbles) from the Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens. A.L.S., Lord Elgin, in the third person, one page, 8vom Broomhall (Fife, Scotland), 1st January 1822, to Mr. Beloc (?). Elgin states that he would be obliged to his correspondent if they were to send 'to Mr Hamilton of the Foreign Office, another copy of the list of members of the Travellers Club', adding that he believes Hamilton is still at Southampton. Accompanied by an A.N.S. by Beloc (?), one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d., stating, in full, 'Is the autograph of that devastator and spoliator of the Parthenon the celebrated Elgin worthy (of) a place in your collection'. Addressed to the verso to J. Potter Esq. Some very light, minor age wear, about VG, 2The Travellers Club is the oldest of the surviving Pall Mall clubs in London, and one of the most exclusive. The private gentlemen's club, whose membership largely consists of diplomats and travellers, was established in 1819.

CARTER HOWARD: (1874-1939) English archaeologist and Egyptologist, discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1923. A.L.S., Howard (a somewhat hurried example), two pages, 8vo, Great Malvern, Worcestershire, n.d. (August 1930), to his brother Samuel Carter, on the printed stationery of The Abbey Hotel. Carter's letter is written in pencil and is evidently a retained draft, with several corrections, stating 'I am so sorry to hear that Mary had another attack and I am equally sorry that it has taken you a fortnight to let me know', suggesting that some rest at Sidmouth will do her the world of good, and continuing 'As to the rest of your letter - be a good chap & tell me what you really mean. Bye the bye, should you wish to address me as Doctor, please don't add Esq.'. Together with the original A.L.S., Saml. by Samuel Carter, three pages, 8vo, Collingham Gardens, London, 2nd August 1930, to Howard Carter, stating, in part, 'I have to write to tell you that the night after your departure Mary had another attack of heart trouble…..had forgotten to get any brandy, so that when things were getting “in extremis” looked to see if you had any, but it was locked up, so tried a small key I had to see if it would open it but that unfortunately “jammed” without any result, & so it will cause a repair to put it right again. I am indeed sorry to trespass on yours, but what wouldn't I do under the circumstances?', adding that she is now staying with friends in Sidmouth although should return next week '& I hope on her return, that everything will be such as not to upset her, as she is causing me great concern'. BREAKSTON GEORGE: (1920-1973) French-American child actor, later a film producer and director. A rare vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of the young actor standing in a full-length pose in costume as the boy Pip from the first sound version of the film Great Expectations (1934) adapted from the Charles Dickens novel of the same title. Photograph by Roy D. MacLean for Universal Pictures and bearing his credit stamp to the verso. Signed, as a juvenile, by Breakston in black fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image. A few light, minor corner creases and one small, insignificant crack to the image, close to, but not affecting the signature. About VG

[CARTER HOWARD]: (1874-1939) English archaeologist and Egyptologist, discovered the Tomb of Tutankhamun in 1923. Small collection of A.Ls.S., T.Ls.S. and other memorandum etc., by various individuals, all written either to Howard Carter or in reference to him, including an autograph memorandum signed (‘H.G.’) by Henri Gauthier (1877-1950) French Egyptologist and geographer, one page, 8vo, n.p., 23rd November 1929, in French, asking for a reply to be sent to the Ministry informing them that the photographs are with Howard Carter in London, although he has agreed to provide two sets of images from a list provided by the Ministry and remarking ‘Il y a plus de 1000 objets de Tutankhamun actuellement exposes dans nos vitrines & il faut naturellement faire un choix’ (Translation: ‘There are more than 1000 Tutankhamun objects currently on display in our showcases & naturally a choice has to be made’), also referring to some photographs for an exhibition in Liege and the question of copyright; a Typed Letter, unsigned, from Gauthier, one page, 8vo, Cairo, 19th November 1929, to Howard Carter, in French, stating, in part, ‘Le Ministre de l'Instruction publique.....nous demande deux series de photographies agrandies des antiquites de Tout-Ankh-Amon, l'une pour servir de modele aux etudiants de l'Ecole des Arts Appliques et l'autre pour etre exposee au pavillon egyptien de l'Exposition de Liege. Nous vous serions tres oblige de vouloir bien nous faire savoir si vous avez une objection a ce qu'il soit donne suite a cette demande’ (Translation: ‘The Minister of Public Instruction….asks us for two series of enlarged photographs of the antiquities of Tout-Ankh-Amon, one to serve as a model for the students of the School of Applied Arts and the other to be exhibited in the Egyptian pavilion at the Liege Exhibition. We would be very grateful if you would kindly let us know if you have any objection to this request being granted’); a T.L.S. by Cecil Mallaby Firth (1878-1931) British Egyptologist, one page, 8vo, Cairo, 9th June 1930, to Thomas Swan of the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research at the University of Pittsburgh, in French, sending some photographs and negatives as requested; an Autograph Memorandum Signed by Campbell Cowan Edgar (1870-1938) Scottish Egyptologist, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., 7th November 1925, in French, stating that he is not sure that they have the right to ask Howard Carter for some photographs, but could invite him to an informal lunch without referring to his rights of publication, etc. Some file holes and light overall age wear, G to about VG, 6

[PAX MUNDI]: [GREAT BRITAIN] Selection of Autograph Statements Signed by a variety of famous individuals from Great Britain, each one page, large folio, various places and dates, including Oliver Lodge (1851-1940) British physicist, stating, in part, 'If humanity would agree to dispense with continually improving instruments of destruction, what energies & material means would be liberated for beneficial activity! We are so used to the present extravagant precautions against the fear of attack, that we fail to realise the wealth of our opportunity. Every nation's insurance policy is too great a burden. The brief typescript document states, in full, 'J' autorise "Le Journal" a reproduire, dans son supplement sur le Salon, le tableau que j'expose, cette annee, au dit Salon' (Translation: 'I authorise “Le Journal” to reproduce, in its supplement on the Salon, the painting that I am exhibiting this year at the said Salon'). You will be very kind to send it to me, including some postage stamps, to pay the approximate expense'). With blank integral leaf (minor traces of former mounting to the head of the verso). CEZANNE PAUL: (1839-1906) French Post-Impressionist painter. A.L.S., P Cezanne, two pages, 8vo, Le Tholonet, 8th September 1897, to [Emile] Solari, in French. Cezanne states that he has just received l'Avenir Artistique et littéraire which Solari had been kind enough to send to him, and continues to remark 'Votre père viendra manger du canard avec moi, dimanche prochain. Il sera aux olives, (Le canard bien entendu.) - Que ne pouvez-vous être des notres' (Translation: 'Your father is coming to eat duck with me next Sunday. It will be with olives, (the duck of course.) - Why can't you be one of us'), concluding by asking Solari to keep him in his good memory for the future. A couple of very light, minor creases and a few extremely minor stains, only very slightly affecting part of the text and signature, about VGEmile Solari (1873-1961) French novelist and poet, son of Philippe Solari (1840-1906) French sculptor, a contemporary and close friend of Paul Cezanne and Emile Zola.

An excellent, rare joint pair of A.Ls.S. by Paul Cezanne and Lucien Pissarro to a bifolium, commencing with Cezanne's A.L.S., P Cezanne, two pages, small 8vo, Pontoise, 11th December 1872, to Camille Pissarro ('Monsieur Pissarro'), in French. Cezanne writes, in full, 'Je prends la plume de Lucien a une heure ou le chemin de fer aucrait du me transporter dans mes penates. C'est vous dire d'une facon detournee que j'ai manque le train. Inutile d'ajouter que je suis jusqu'a demain mercredi votre hote. Or donc, Madame Pissarro vous invite a rapporter de Paris de la farine pert le pour le petit Georges. Puis les chemises de Lucien de chez sa tante Felicie. Je vous souhaite le bonsoir' (Translation: 'I take up Lucien's pen at an hour when the railway should be transporting me to my penates [home]. This is to tell you in a roundabout way that I missed the train. Needless to add that I am your guest until tomorrow, Wednesday. So, Mrs. Pissarro requests that you bring back from Paris some powdered milk for little Georges. And Lucien's shirts, which are with his aunt Felicity. I wish you a good evening'). Following to the third side of the bifolium is the young Lucien Pissarro's A.L.S., Lucien Pissarro, one page, 8vo, n.p. (Pontoise), [11th December] 1872, to his father ('Mon cher papa'), in French. Pissarro writes, in full (with his spelling mistakes retained), 'Mamman te fait dire que la poerte est cassee que tu viene vite parce que les voleur peuve ruenir. Je te pris si tu veux bien de m'apporte une boite a couleur. Minette te pris que tu lui apporte une baigneuse. Je n'est pas bien ecrit parce que n'etait pas diposee?' (Translation: 'Mama wants you to know the door is broken so come quick because thieves could come. Please bring me a box of paints. Minette begs you to bring her a bathing costume. I am not writing well because I don't feel like it'). Two charming letters with excellent associations. Some light overall age wear, otherwise VG Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) French Impressionist painter.  Georges Henri Manzana Pissarro (1871-1961) French artist who worked in Impressionist and Post-Impressionist styles and was also a designer of textiles, decorative objects, furniture and glassware. Jeanne-Rachel 'Minette' Pissarro (1865-1874) Daughter of Camille and Julie Pissarro, the artist's favourite amongst his seven children. Minette appears in more portraits by Pissarro than any of her siblings. When she became ill at the age of eight, her father represented her decline in a moving series of paintings and drawings including a heart-breaking lithograph depicting her as she lay dying.

PISSARRO CAMILLE: (1830-1903) French Impressionist painter & LUCIEN (1863-1944) French landscape painter, printmaker, wood engraver, designer, and printer of fine books, the eldest son of Camille and Julie Pissarro. A wonderful joint pair of A.Ls.S. by Camille and Lucien Pissarro to a bifolium, commencing with Lucien Pissarro's A.L.S., Lucien, one page, 8vo, Paris, 18th February 1888, to his mother ('Ma chere Mere'), in French. Lucien informs his mother, 'Voici 15 jours que je suis sans travail j'en ai profite pour dessiner un peu et pour tacher d'avoir quelques illustrations a faire - je dois aller voir ce soir a l'atelier si il y a quelque chose a faire. Je n'ai pas perdu mon temps car j'ai vu pas mal de monde et j'espere pouvoir a un moment donne avoir des dessins dans les journaux ou dans les livres, car la est l'avenir pour moi' (Translation: 'I've been out of work for 15 days now, so I took the opportunity to draw a little and try to have some illustrations to do - I have to go and see if there's anything to do at the studio tonight. I didn't waste my time because I saw a lot of people and I hope to be able to have drawings in the newspapers or in books at some point, because that is the future for me'). Lucien also adds that they received the basket that she had sent, and that Georges is very happy with his wood, concluding in affectionate terms, 'Au revoir, ma chere mere, embrasse bien tous les enfants pour moi, je t'embrasse aussi, ton fils qui t'aime' (Translation: 'Goodbye, my dear mother, kiss all the children for me, I kiss you too, your son who loves you'). Following to the inside of the bifolium appears Camille Pissarro's A.L.S., C. Pissarro, two pages, 8vo, Paris, 18th February 1888, to his wife ('Ma chere Julie'), in French. Pissarro informs his wife that he is sending her three hundred francs and asks that she write to him as soon as possible to let him know that she has received it, also enquiring if he should give one hundred francs to Amelie and commenting 'J'ai encore une petite affaire et une autre plus importante en train, si cela reussit je pourrai encore donner quelque chose a l'une des deux qui n'aura rien recu. Je faut que j'achette a Georges une paire de bottines et un parapluie etc.' (Translation: 'I still have some small business and another more important in the pipeline, if that succeeds I could still give something to one of the two who will not have received anything. I have to buy Georges a pair of boots and an umbrella etc.'), also remarking that he hopes to return to Eragny soon to prepare some paintings. Pissarro provides his frank advice to an aspiring artist PISSARRO CAMILLE: (1830-1903) French Impressionist painter. Autograph draft of a letter, unsigned, one page, slim 4to (written in pencil to the verso of one half of a printed death announcement), n.p., n.d. (c.1896), in French. Pissarro provides a frank answer to his correspondent's equally frank letter asking to work under the artist's direction and remarks 'Je ne crois pas qu'il soit profitable pour un jeune peintre de suivre exclusivement la direction d'un maitre. Vous avez dites-vous profitte de l'etude de mes oeuvres, il me semble que vous feriez sagement d'en suivre quelques autres afin de ne pas tomber dans une maniere personelle qui vous serait plutot nuisible. J'ai explique non facon de voir a tous ceux qui m'on demande mon assistance artistique et jusqu'a present je n'ai guere reussi a leur faire comprendre l'art qui ne s'enseigne pas personellement. Le meilleur moyen est encore de suivre l'enseignement que vous donnent les oeuvres divers des artistes de valeur. Je vous dis cela comme je le pense avec l'espoir que vous en saurez tirer profit, comme du reste nous tous nous avons fait en etudiant les Corot, Millet, Delacroix, Daumier, Courbet etc. etc. sans etre sous leur influence personelle' (Translation: 'I do not believe that it is profitable for a young painter to follow exclusively the direction of a master. You said you benefitted from the study of my works, it seems to me that you would be wise to follow some others in order not to fall into a personal way which would be rather harmful to you. HOSCHEDE MONET ALICE: (1844-1911) French artists' model, wife of the art collector Ernest Hoschede and later of the Impressionist painter Claude Monet. A.L.S., Alice, three pages, 8vo, n.p. (Poissy), n.d., to a friend, in French. Hoschede Monet announces 'Nous t'avions attendu hier toute la journee et j'ai ete bien etonne de vous que tu etais passe a Poissy sans t'arreter. J'espere que tu ne manqueras pas de venir avec qui tu le dis a la fin de la semaine car je crois que M. Monet doit revenir lundi ou Mardi' (Translation: 'We had been waiting for you all day yesterday and I was very surprised that you passed by Poissy without stopping. I hope you won't fail to come with whomever you say at the end of the week because I believe that Mr. Monet must return on Monday or Tuesday') and continues 'Je souhaite que toute tes belles esperances se realisent, mais n'ose y croire beaucoup! Marthe va mieux je crois elle a bien souffert tous ces jours......tous les enfants ne cessent de te demander et hier a chaque coup de sonnette ils se precipitaient esperant toujours te voir arriver. Enfin j'espere que cette fois tu ne manqueras par de venir pour moi.....Je ne puis aller a Paris etant absolument sans argent pour le moment' (Translation: 'I wish that all your beautiful hopes come true, but dare not believe it much! Marthe is better, I think she suffered a lot these days…..all the children keep asking for you and yesterday at each ring of the doorbell they rushed in, still hoping to see you arrive. SIGNAC PAUL: (1863-1935) French Neo-Impressionist painter. A.L.S., Paul Signac, one page, 8vo, Les Maraniousques, Viviers, Ardeche, 1st August n.y., to a friend, in French. Signac confirms that a painting is indeed that of Madame Henri-Edmond Cross, although adds that without access to his documents at the present moment he cannot confirm the date of the work or when it was exhibited, further suggesting that they contact Felix Feneron who will be happy to assist. With blank integral leaf. A minor, light stain to the upper left corner, otherwise VGHenri-Edmond Cross (1856-1910) French painter and printmaker, a master of Neo-Impressionism. In 1893 Cross married Irma Clare, the former wife of Hector France, whom he had first met in 1888. Cross's portrait Madame Hector France is held by the Musee d'Orsay in Paris.Felix Feneon (1861-1944) French art critic, gallery director, writer and anarchist who coined the term Neo-Impressionism in 1886.

PICABIA FRANCIS: (1879-1953) French avant-garde painter associated with Cubism. A.L.S., Francis, one page, 4to, Rue Danielle Casanova (Paris), n.d. ('Mardi'), to 'Mon petite Meraud', in French. Picabia states that his correspondent's letter had given him great pleasure and continues to add 'moi aussi je pense que c'est absurde de ne plus nous voir - je vais faire tout mon possible pour aller a Aix et rester pres de toi plusieurs jours' (Translation: 'I too think it's absurd not to see each other anymore - I'm going to do my best to go to Aix and stay near you for several days'), further suggesting the beginning of November and concluding by sending his and his wife, Olga's, wholehearted embraces. LEGER FERNAND: (1881-1955) French painter, sculptor and filmmaker. A.L.S., F Leger (and again Fernand Leger beneath), two pages, 4to, n.p., n.d. (c. June 1949), to a gentleman, in French. Leger's letter is written to the foot and verso of a typed letter, unsigned, from A. J. Cauliez, dated at Paris, 18th June 1949, on the printed stationery of Cineum, in French, asking if Leger would be kind enough to take part in a survey they are conducting in response to the questions 'Y a-t-il une nouvelle avant-garde cinematographique? Dans quels films se manifeste-t-elle?' (Translation: 'Is there a new cinematic avant-garde? In which films does it appear?) and explaining that they will devote a special issue of their journal to the matter. Leger responds by informing his correspondent that he participated in a similar discussion earlier in the month, explaining 'Je n'ai pu causer que sur l'epoque 1920-32 qui est celle ou le film d'avant garde etait lie a l'evolution parallele epoque cubiste (objets) ballet mecanique, Dada....abstrait les allemande Egelung (?)Richter etc, les surrealistes Bunuel' (Translation: 'I was only able to talk about the period 1920-32, which is when avant-garde film was linked to the parallel evolution of the Cubist period (objects), mechanical ballet, Dada…..German Abstract, Egelung (?) Richter etc, the Surrealists, Bunuel'). Leger also refers to some short films and documentaries, asking 'mais si le que ce sont des films avant garde?' (Translation: 'but what if these are avant-garde films?) and also states 'En ce qui concerne la liaison peinture-film, je ne vois en ce moment que ceux realises en realisation sur la vie et l'oeuvre des artistes de generations precedentes. Le passage au dessin-anime devrait etre la technique' (Translation: 'As far as the painting-film connection is concerned, at the moment I only see those made on the life and work of artists from previous generations. CHAGALL MARC: (1887-1985) Russian-born French artist. A.L.S., Marc Chagall, two pages, 4to, n.p., 21st May 1925, to a gentleman, in French. Chagall thanks his correspondent for a draft contract and proceeds to suggest a few alterations, in part, '1. Par exemple c'est pas toujours que je fais les dessins pour les gravures souvent ce sont de petits croquis…..2. Je voudrais que les cuivres apres le premier tirage serions detruites. 3. Quant au terme, je vous prierais de pas preciser la date. Je n'oubeierai…..Peut-etre je les ferai plus tot du temps….4. Quant au payement, je vous demanderais 2000 fr a la signature du contrat et tout la reste a la livraison….' (Translation: '1. For example, it's not always that I make the drawings for the engravings, often they are small sketches…..2. I would like the brass after the first stage to be destroyed. 3. As to the term, I would ask you not to specify the date. I won't forget….Maybe I'll do them sooner…..4. As for the payment, I would ask you 2000 francs at the signing of the contract and all the rest on delivery…..'). Chagall further requests that the work be carried out by his engraver, Monsieur Fort, 'car je sois deja habitue a travailler avec lui et il connait deja bien me maniere de travail' (Translation: 'because I am already used to working with him and he already knows my way of working well') and concludes by remarking 'Je vous remercie infiniment pour votre livre, il est tres interessant, il m'inspire beaucoup d'emotion' (Translation: 'Thank you very much for your book, it is very interesting, it inspires me with great emotion'). VAN DONGEN KEES: (1877-1968) Dutch-French painter. A.L.S., Kees Van Dongen, two pages, 4to, Villa Said (Paris), 5th July n.y. (1940s), to a friend, in French. Van Dongen explains that he only received his friend's letter of 12th June that day, explaining that it had not been forwarded from Lyon and remarking 'Voila l'unique raison pour laquelle vous n'avez pas plutot eu de moi un mot pour vous dire que je n'ecoute jamais les bavardages de femmes. Mais on ne m'a jamais rien dit de malverillant sur vous' (Translation: 'That's the only reason why you didn't hear a word from me to tell you that I never listen to the chatter of women. But I've never been told anything malicious about you') continuing 'Nous sommes loin de l'autre - je suis souvent absent - je ne recois pas - c'est la guerre, et voila il me semble les raisons pour lesquelles on ne se voit guere' (Translation: 'We are far from each other - I'm often absent - I don't receive - it's war, and here, it seems to me, are the reasons why we hardly see each other') and concluding by inviting his friend to call by his house for a cup of tea if he is ever in the neighbourhood. DE CHIRICO GIORGIO: (1888-1978) Italian artist, founder of the scuola metafisica art movement which greatly influenced the surrealists. Signed 13 x 21 poster, printed in black on a striking yellow background, was issued to advertise De Chirico's appearance at the Galleria La Tela on Saturday, 16th December 1972, on the occasion of the release of Hebdomero in a limited edition of 500 copies numbered and signed by the author. Signed ('Giorgio de Chirico') by the artist with his name alone in black ink to a clear area of the background. Some light creasing, about VGHebdomeros is a book (sometimes referred to as a novel) by De Chirico which was originally published in 1929 and has been hailed by some critics as 'probably…the finest' major work of Surrealist fiction.

MIRO JOAN: (1893-1983) Spanish painter. An excellent, lengthy and early A.L.S., Miro, three pages, 4to, Barcelona, 7th April 1934, to [Christian] Zervos, in French. Miro states that he has received his correspondent's letter, article and photograph, explaining that he did not answer sooner 'parce que j'ai du me rendrer a Montrois pour verifier d'apres le dessins.....les dates exactes, et vous donner de la facon la plus exacte possible, les renseignments que vous m'aviez demande a Paris' (Translation: 'because I had to go to Montrois to check according to the drawings….the exact dates, and to give you in the most exact way possible, the information that you had asked me for in Paris') and continuing to write concerning Zervos's article, and offering some advice, 'Votre article est tres, tres bien, vous avez tres bien compris mes inquietudes, il est en meme temps ecrit avec un grand courage. Je l'ai lu maintes fois attentivement et en suis tres emu. Vous en remercie de tout Coeur. Il faudrait toutefois rectifer, quelques dates, il m'etait tres difficile de les preciser lors de notre entretien chez vous. J'estime que ces donnees doivent etre tres exacter, d'autant plus qu'elles seront repandues a l'etranger, ou l'on se servira de ce numero de "Cahiers d'Art" lorsque l'on voudra ecrire quelque chose d'important sur moi. a) J'ai commence l'etude de la peinture a l'age de 14 ans, mon premier professeur a ete Urgell, et plus tard Pasco. b) Je cesse de peindre de 1910 a 1912 - a partir de cette date je m'adonne entierement a la peinture et frequente a Barcelone certaines academies etc. et passe mes vacances a Montrois, je frequente les academies jusqu'a 1914, et desormais je travaillerai seul.  c) arrive a Paris pour le premiere fois en mars 1919, et c'est a partir de cette date que je travaille tantot a Barcelone tantot a Montrois, tantot a Paris. d) qouique la plupart de reproductions n'auront pas de titre, il ne faudrait cependant pas negliger d'en mettre a celles que vous citez dans votre article et aux plus representatives pour mieux le comprendre. e) ces tableaux ont ete faits l'hiver et le printemps 1933. f) Je trouve aussi que c'est mieux que vous supprimiez ce passage. Comme vous voyez toutes les rectifications sont tres necessaires et tres importantes, je vous demande de faire l'impossible pour y etre a temps' (Translation: 'Your article is very, very good, you have understood my concerns very well, it is at the same time written with great courage. Miro also asks his correspondent if they have decided to go ahead with an exhibition, and to let him know the exact date of the opening as soon as they know it, and further enquiring if invitations will be sent, in which case Miro will provide some addresses, additionally writing 'J'ai reflechi a ce que votre femme me demande d'apporter de nouveaux tableaux. Il me semble que cette nouvelle serie faudrait la montrer ensemble, ce serait une erreur que d'en exposer quelques specimens au prealable. Ce qui serait peut-etre tres bien, ce que, du moment ou "Cahiers d'Art" est consacre a toute mon oeuvre, vous exposiez aussi, dans une piece a part quelques toiles anciennes. En etant fait simultanement a l'apparition de "Cahiers d'Art" cela n'aura nullement l'air d'une retrospective, qu'il faut a tout prix eviter.......ca restera tres intime et n'aura pas l'air pretentieux d'une exposition rue de la Boetie. Et suivrait en meme temps la trajectoire qui se termine en 1933' (Translation: 'I thought about your wife asking me to bring new paintings. Je lui demandais s'il m'autorisait a ecrire a Matisse pour lui demander de s'entendre avec lui pour les mensualites de maniere a ce que ce fut Pierre qui ces versat en toute sa totalite. Je crois que du moment ou Pierre est, pour ainsi dire, le marchand officiel, pourrait trouver des moyens pour regler les mensualites…..' (Translation: 'I wrote him two letters in response to his where he informed me of the agreement with [Henri] Matisse and he did not answer me. ERNST MAX: (1891-1976) German painter, sculptor, printmaker and graphic artist, a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism in Europe. Book signed and inscribed, being a hardback edition of the monograph Max Ernst by Patrick Waldberg, First edition with French text, edited and published by Jean-Jacques Pauvert, Paris, 1958. With numerous illustrations, some in colour, the selection of which was supervised by Ernst and with the artist also designing the initial letters for the chapter headings. Signed and inscribed by Ernst to the half-title page in blue ink, also adding an ink drawing of Loplop, Father Superior of the Birds, the alter ego of Ernst, in his hand. COCTEAU JEAN: (1889-1963) French poet, playwright, novelist, artist, filmmaker and critic. A good original colour drawing signed by Cocteau, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d. (c.1948). In various coloured pencils, predominantly pale blue and yellow, Cocteau has drawn a figure looking upwards, with the title Les parents Terribles alongside. Signed ('Jean Cocteau') in red pencil beneath the title (the signature somewhat indistinct). To the foot of the page Cocteau has added an A.L.S., Jean Cocteau, in blue ink, to Monsieur Georges, in French, stating, in full, 'Vous me demandez une photographie - et je n'en ai pas de bonne sous la main. J'ai pense que cette esquisse pour une couverture vous ferait plaisir' (Translation: 'You ask me for a photograph - and I don't have a good one handy. I thought this sketch for a cover would please you'). Neatly mounted to a stiff card. Some light overall age toning and a couple of extremely small, minor stains to the upper and lower edges, otherwise about VGLes Parents terribles is a play written by Cocteau in 1938 and first performed at the Theatre des Ambassadeurs in November 1938. Its run was terminated the following month amid accusations of immortality and the production was transferred to the Theatre des Bouffes-Parisiens in January 1939 where it continued until the outbreak of World War II. In 1948 a film adaptation was released, directed and narrated by Cocteau and starring Jean Marais.

Signed 8 x 10 photograph of Vasarely seated in a half-length profile pose, smoking a cigarette, with an example of one of his works in the immediate background. Photograph by Jack Nisberg and bearing his credit stamp to the verso. Signed ('Vasarely') in black ink to a light area of the image. LOWRY L. S.: (1887-1976) English artist. Autograph envelope signed, addressed in Lowry's hand to Mr. G. B. Cotton at Kingsley Road, Swinton, Manchester, and post marked at Manchester, 10th July 1967. Lowry's signature ('L. S. Lowry') appears in black ink to a light area at the head of the colour postage stamp which features an image of his painting Coming Out of School (1927). The envelope remains sealed and without any contents, and was therefore most likely prepared by Lowry as a souvenir for Mr. Cotton. VG

HIRST DAMIEN: (1965-     ) English artist, one of the Young British Artists of the 1990s. A good original pen and ink drawing signed by Hirst, the image executed across facing pages within a small 8vo notebook and depicting a tiger shark. Inscribed ('for Natalia xxxx') by Hirst to the head of the pages and signed with his name alone beneath the drawing. The notebook also contains numerous other little drawings, observations and notes etc. in the hand of the previous owner, and also includes a loosely inserted airplane ticket stub for a Virgin Atlantic flight from New York to London on 13th November (2007) and it was whilst waiting to check in for the flight at John F. Kennedy International Airport that the drawing and signature were obtained. Some light age wear, VGA tiger shark features in one of Hirst's most famous artworks, the iconic The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991).

CARPEAUX JEAN-BAPTISTE: (1827-1875) French sculptor and painter. A.L.S., J Bte. Carpeaux, one page, Maison Municipale de Sante, Rue Saint-Denis, Paris, 18th April 1874, to Vollon. The sculptor writes, in full, 'Je suis presque ton voisin, quand ta aurais un instant a perdre viens voir tou vieil admirateur et ami. Je suis bien malade. Je sens le desir de te voir. Songes a moi' (Translation: 'I'm almost your neighbour, when you have a moment to lose come see your old admirer and friend. I am very ill. I feel the desire to see you. Think of me') and in a postscript Carpeaux sends his affectionate compliments to Vollon's lovely wife and children. With blank integral leaf. A few minor, light creases and stains, VG

BARTHOLDI FREDERIC AUGUSTE: (1834-1904) French sculptor, best known for designing the Statue of Liberty ('Liberty Enlightening the World'). A.L.S., Bartholdi, one page, 12mo (folding Telegramme stationery), n.p. (Paris), 18th December 1896, to Dr. Gaubert, in French. Bartholdi regrets to inform his correspondent that he won't be able to come that evening, explaining 'Je suis pris par un bete mal de dents qui m'abrutit' (Translation: 'I am taken by a beastly toothache which stupefies me') and also asking for his regrets to be passed to another individual who Bartholdi had previously advised that he would be there. A couple of very light, extremely minor creases, otherwise VG

RODIN AUGUSTE: (1840-1917) French sculptor. L.S., Aug Rodin, two pages, 8vo, Rue de l'Universite (Paris), 31st October 1902, to [Jean] Limet, in French. Rodin enquires as to when his correspondent is coming back to Paris and continues 'Je vous demande ceci pour que nous ne nous trouvions par deboides par quelques pieces. J'attends le plaisir de vous voir…..' (Translation: 'I ask this of you so that we do not find ourselves debilitated by a few pieces. I await the pleasure of seeing you…..'). Some light age wear, creasing and a few small tears, only very slightly affecting the signature, GJean Limet (1855-1941) French painter, appointed by Rodin as the patinator of his bronzes and photographer of his work.

RODIN AUGUSTE: (1840-1917) French sculptor. A good, large vintage signed 11 x 14 photograph, the image depicting one of Rodin's sculptures of two entwined human figures, reminiscent of his work The Fall of the Angels which recalls the figures produced by Rodin for his monumental bronze sculptural group within The Gates of Hell. Signed ('Rodin') by the sculptor with his surname only to a light area at the base of the image. An impressive signed image, and quite rare in this larger format.
