PIUS VI: (1717-1799) Pope of the Catholic Church 1775-99. L.S., Pius qui Supra, four pages, small 4to, S. Mary Major, Rome, 15th August 1794, to `Dearest Son in Christ`. The Pope writes, in part, `Although not publicly, you have asked by means of a third person, Your Majesty`s Confessor, whether we have acquiesced to nominations to the vacant bishoprics in the said kingdom: our reply is that we are unable to agree to this, for the reasons which we have communicated to that same Confessor, and which we have repeated to Cardinal Spinelli, who, immediately on his return to Rome forcefully represented Your Majesty`s wish. Nevertheless, given the zeal directly displayed by Your Majesty, we do not refuse to comply with you, but rather with the claim, which represents a different method from that which we have adhered to in the previous provision, made early in the year 1792. That is to say, we believe that the Bishops, as they have been for so many years, both by Our predecessors and by Ourselves, should be created by a free election, except of course for those reserved to be named by Your Majesty in the Concordat, made by Clement VII with the Emperor Charles V, which will always remain for us sacrosanct and inviolate. We might assent, it is true, for once to the nomination of Your Majesty and of the free church, but we could not accept this means as a binding method, to become part of all the other new undertakings….we cannot sacrifice both the free choice of bishops, always considered one of the brightest jewels in the Papal crown, together with all the other rights belonging to it, which the apostolic seat has perpetually enjoyed, so that such an accumulation of losses would be made by our side, thanks to the unexpected claims of your Royal Court. Now we feel that His Majesty will hear repeated in his ear the declarations of the patrons, but we, with more reason will repeat that, for the bishoprics, such patrons are not acceptable, and we cannot see our way to the nomination of bishops, without the apostolic pardon….` The first and concluding five lines appear to be in the hand of Pius VI. Some light staining to the left edge of each page, only lightly affecting parts of the text, which remain completely legible. About VG

The Pope offers his greetings and Apostolic Blessing to his correspondent, and continues `We welcome the proof of your love towards us in your Christmas letter, commemorating what our Redeemer has bestowed upon us. With regard to the trials which oppress us, and the evils which afflict the Church of God, you show that your soul is deeply affected, and demonstrate an ardent desire, that, by the grace of God, and his merciful gift of joyful things, we may achieve and rejoice in a longed-for peace.` The Pope continues to re-inforce the power of prayer and in concluding writes `as proof of our good will towards you, we pledge the apostolic blessing, which we affectionately impart to all the clergy, lay people and faithful entrusted to your care.` With integral address leaf bearing a red wax seal. It has been my lot to elicit sneers, particularly from the intellectual giants....and to receive some acrid criticism from people nearer home because I like to write and to chat about what are called "autographs"....` Joline continues to express his views on many aspects of autograph collecting, referring to several collectors and authors, facsimiles and forgeries etc. Some light overall staining and age wear, and a number of inky fingerprints to the edges of most pages.
