It is now lacking. Some enamel has lift off leaving plain silver apparent. Those areas mostly noticeable on the elephant's trunk, ears, the mahout's arm. To Be Sold With No ReserveAn unusual printed copy of an edict of Muzaffar al-Din Shah (reg. 1896-1907),giving permission for the sale of gramophones to an American Limited Society (Societe Anonyme Fournisseur) after their functions had been demonstrated to the Shah, Qajar Persia, dated dhu'l-qa'dah 1323AH/December 1905-January 1906AD, 4ll. of printed nasta'liq script on paper, within gold cloudbands, the lines interspersed with bands of undulating floral motifs, a reproduction of the seal of the Shah dated AH 1314/AD 1896-97 and his signature, both within floral cartouches, creased, framed and glazed52 x 32.5cm. Provenance: Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 7 October 2010, Lot 31In 1906 Maxime Pick a salesman for gramophones and typewriters received permission from Muzzafer Al-Din Shah to distribute the gramophone. Following the lead of Edison agents who rushed to prominent statesman and artists to demonstrate the superior sound of the new recording machine by recording and then mass distributing their voices, Pick hurried a letter to the court of Muzzafer Al-Din Shah requesting that the Shah issue an order (firman) to the community of artists and singers to record them thus providing entertainment for the Shah and that the firman also grant The Gramophone Company permission to distribute and sell the new machine in Iran. The firman was not easily granted, Pick himself had to go to the court and record the Shah to prove the potential of the new machine. Five records were made in the course of this visit, two of them bear the seal and signature of the Shah and are dated January 16th 1906. A third one which according to Pick records the Shah extolling the virtues of the gramophone ironically lacks his signature.Condition Report: Paper lightly browned overall. Corners present, however, scuffed. Edges, scuffed. Overall lightly creased with pronounced fold marks. Light losses to edges, especially visible to the central fold mark, perhaps a combination of tears and worm hole. Marginal areas stained, especially to the upper right quarter and lower left marginal area. Damp spot to lower right corner area. Weak seal impression. Text clean and crisp. The glaze broken.

(2)Condition Report: The dish on short foot :This dish is extensively repaired and restored from multiple breaks. Traces of filling are noticeable in and along the breaks. A crack is visible to its base. Traces of repainted areas are visible tot he naked eyes, mostly to the rim, cavetto and bottom of the dish. Two losses are noticeable to the cavetto. They may have resulted from the manufacturing or the restoration process. The conical bowl :This bowl is extensively repaired and restored from multiple breaks. Traces of filling are noticeable in and along the breaks. Blemishes, repaints, fillings, losses to glaze and paste can be seen across the surface of this work. Please note this lot has not been inspected under U. V light to prepare this condition report.

Six calligraphic album pages in fine nasta'liq script,Persia, or perhaps Deccan, late 16th-17th century,comprising exercises in various letters and the methods of joining them to other letters, Arabic manuscript on gold-sprinkled paper, each page consisting of two lines of text written in fine, large nasta'liq script in black ink, inner margins ruled in gold, blue and red, laid down on marbled borders, the six mounted, framed and glazed together, album pages 10 x 17.5cm.; frame 99 x 35.5 cm. Footnotes: The calligraphic pages are exercises on writing the letters ba, 'ayn, ta, ha, fa and mim, and the various shapes they can take when joined with other letters. At least five letters (jim, sin, sad, kaf, lam) are missing from this demonstration of letters, bearing in mind that many letters have the same shape (such as ba, ta, tha, pe, jim, che, ha, kha) and are only distinguishable by the number of dots placed above or below them, and that there are also a few that cannot be joined up with the letters following them (such as dal, ra, waw).Condition Report: All the panels are stained and pitted especially the second. third and fourth. A crease affects the first line of the fourth. The fifth shows darker stains and a light crease above both lines, especially the first. A defect in the paper affects both lines. The sixth shows more noticeable brushstroke like staining to the upper left corner.

A small Chinese turquoise and iron red-enamelled reticulated 'floral' incense box and coverQing dynasty, Qianlong periodThe cover delicately enamelled with a dense floral scroll including chrysanthemums, Indian lotus, morning glory, peony, hibiscus, and finger citrons, centred around a reticulated cash medallion to the top, and turquoise-enamelled square reticulated medallions with cash motifs to the sides, the turquoise base with tall rims encircling a further reticulated cash medallion to the centre of the base, 6cm high.清乾隆 松石綠地礬紅彩繪纏枝花卉圖紋鏤空四方薰爐Known as 'the gentleman of flowers', lotus has long held a prominent position in Chinese art because of its association with Buddhism, where among other things, it symbolises purity because of the fact that it grows bright and pure out of muddy waters. Its names, he 荷and lian 蓮, are also homophones to the words harmony, he 和, ‘binding in marriage’聯 and love戀, as well as the word 'continuous' or 'successive', making it a perfect symbol for a harmonious union with many children.Chrysanthemum, beautiful and colourful, represents autumn. As it blooms in autumn when all other flowers are fading away, it symbolises the ability to withstand adversity. It is tranquil and harmonious with others, but also dignified and indomitable.Hibiscus (mufurong 木芙蓉) is another flower of autumn. Two of the characters that make up its name soun similar to the words for 'wealth' (fu 富) and 'glory' (rong 荣). Together with the peony, a flower of wealth and honour, it represents a greeting: 'May you have high position and great wealth' (ronghua fugue 榮華富貴).Morning glory in Chinese culture tends to represent love and affection, and given as a symbol of longing, as well as symbolising marital bliss.The finger citron, in Chinese foshou 佛手, or Buddha’s hand, is a homophone and visual pun to the phrase, good fortune/wealth and longevity, fu shou 福壽.Condition Report: Light rubbing to enamels. A short restored hairline to one side (approx. 10mm), and a restored broken off section to another side. Some flaking to turquoise enamel to base and expected light surface wear. Some brown burnishing to interior.

As can be seen on the website illustrations, the decoration remains strong overall. The inside would require some light cleaning. The white glass bottle :Possibly a huqqa base. The body, neck, mouth and rim are intact. Some minute and light dents can be noticed at at the base of the waisted neck. They maybe manufacturing faults. The gilt is slightly rubbed, especially to the rim. The blue and red painted decoration is strong and crisp overall.
