Signed below the window, oil on canvas 34.5 x 24.5cm. * The lot is accompanied by a signed letter by the artist to Henry Smith, dated September 10th 1875, in which Claxton declares that `the picture is not a portrait of anyone but was done from a sketch taken in the Bus. He looked like "A Canny Scotsman"`. Claxton adds that he thinks it `was sold to Broadhead who has bought 52 of my works`. *CR Unlined; generally good condition; needs a light clean.
