PRINCIPI. DOMINICVS. IACOBATIVS., in scroll below ET. FERA. MEMOR. BENEFICII., 98mm (Molinari 96; Varriano 79; Venuti XX, Miselli 567; Vannel-Toderi 504; Börner 1177; Lincoln 1192; Ciechanowiecki 255; Clifford (Spink/Christie, 21 May 1996), lot 186). A superb original cast with light patination, extremely fine. The medal is said to commemorate the end of the plague in Rome and was commissioned by Domenico Jacobacci. Clifford states the medal to be “probably the finest and most ambitious example of Italian medallic art of the seventeenth century”. The involvement of Bernini is well documented; it was his idea to use the lion as a symbol of remembrance (the lion recognises the gladiator who had once pulled a thorn from its foot). A photocopy letter from Graham Pollard at the Fitzwilliam Museum (3 April 1987), states, “Your superb Alexander VII … is of comparable quality to the museum example.”
COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, WORLD MEDALS, RUSSIA Nicholas I (1825-1855), Unveiling of his Equestrian Statue in St Petersburg, Silver Medal, low purity silver of.500 fineness, 1859, by P Brusnitsyn, bust left in uniform with breast-plate, wearing eagle-topped helmet, rev the statue and plinth, 86mm (Diakov 681.1 R2). Light surface marks, toned, nearly extremely fine. The equestrian statue in St Isaac’s Square was designed by Auguste Ricard de Monferrand and was a technical wonder in its time for the way it balanced only on the horse’s two back legs. The plinth is of Finnish granite, decorated with sculptures executed by Russia’s leading sculptors. The monument, which took three years to complete, is one of the very few Imperial sculptural monuments to have survived the Soviet era.

Matt surface, extremely fine. Struck for the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Maritime de Suez. Formed in 1858, French private investors were the majority of the shareholders, with Egypt also having a significant stake. However in 1875, a financial crisis forced Isma’il to sell his shares to the British Government for £3,976,582. The company operated the canal until 1956, when it was nationalised by Nasser.

COINS, CHANNEL ISLANDS, GUERNSEY William IV (1830-1837), Copper Double, 1830, dot before date (Pr 72 var; S 7202; KM 1). Extremely fine with light red brown tone, rare. ex A L T McCammon collection, Baldwins Auction 20, 11 October 1999, lot 144 (part) The date and the D and E of DOUBLE have been double cut, while the dot looks like it has been double stamped with the second stamp taking out half of the dot. The dot is of a significant size that it is something intentional and not a piece of rust or a slip of the die cutter. But it is slightly elliptical, so hard to imagine what stamp was used to put it there. Puzzling.
COINS, CHANNEL ISLANDS, GUERNSEY George V (1910-1936), Bronze Specimen 2-Doubles and 8-Doubles, 1914H (cf Pr 67, 26; S 7216A; KM 12, 14). Both as struck with a light tone. (2) ex A L T McCammon collection, Baldwins Auction 20, 11 October 1999, lot 155 (part) ex RJ Ford, Spink Auction 79, 15 October 1990, lot 143, and Heaton Mint, Birmingham
COINS, CHANNEL ISLANDS, GUERNSEY George V (1910-1936), Bronze Specimen 8-Doubles, 1934H (cf Pr 29; S 7214A; KM 14). In PCGS holder graded SP63RD, appears to have been lacquered. It is not easy to be sure through the plastic holder, if the coin has been lacquered, but it does seem that the evident light hairlines are in lacquer rather than on the coin. This has probably resulted in the coin being graded only as a 63, visually it is better than this grade.
COINS, CHANNEL ISLANDS, JERSEY Victoria (1837-1901), Bronze Proof 1/13-Shilling, 1870 (Pr 10A; S 7004; KM 5). Light die crack from C of VICTORIA to centre of the coin, darkly toned but uncirculated. ex Pridmore , Glendinings, 22 September 1981, lot 527 ex A L T McCammon collection, Baldwins Auction 20, 11 October 1999, lot 195 This date as a proof not in the Dick Ford sale. The flan crack would not have easily satisfied the two other serious collectors of this series, but maybe this was the best they could find. Perhaps the rarity has not really been acknowledged.
