MATISSE HENRI: (1869-1954) French Artist. An excellent illustrated A.L.S., with his initials H. M., four pages, 8vo, Nice, 6th January 1922, to his wife Amelie, in French. Matisse states that he has received Jean's paintings, including a portrait of Marguerite, a bowl of mandarins and a viola, adding that he has placed them on his wall to replace his own which are currently being packed ('I have the trunk and am trying to roll the biggest paintings around a stick, but haven't quite figured out the right way, and we've had to redo the first one, which I didn't do well, three times') and which he hopes will be sent tomorrow afternoon, remarking 'You can look at them at your leisure once they have been put on their stretcher bars. But don't show the whole lot because the Bernheims [Bernheim-Jeune, one of the oldest art galleries in Paris] could find out about it and reclaim them', further going into more detail about the paintings and his current work, 'The smallest are paintings of 3. One of them is an unprimed one of 4 that is coming back for the gallerists, but I intend to keep it because I worked on it a lot at the same time as a large design on the same subject that I have here. Another small one of 3 which I worked on in at least 15 sessions will not be with the lot because I have not finished it. I work on it 2 ½ to 4 hours every day, and it is going well. I will send it to you separately once it is done, and I hope you will like it. From now until my departure, I will not have enough time to finish what I have started. I am enclosing in my letter 2 photos (no longer present) one of a painting of 30, the nude, and one of a 15, a young girl seated on the arm of a chair, looking at the window'. Matisse returns to the subject of their son, Jean's, paintings, commenting 'I would say that my first impression made me see qualities but I also saw that he is at the peak of his instinctive elan and that he is starting to dissociate the various elements of the painting (colour, design, value). It shows that he has not studied it. For example in the viola…..and in the portrait, and also the mandarins, but the bowl is good. There are good parts in all paintings, next to flaws. He really has to go and see the Chardins at the Louvre, especially the pipe [at this point in the letter Matisse has drawn a small pen and ink sketch representing Jean Simeon Chardin's still life Pipes and Drinking Vessels] the peaches and the glass of wine, the brioche, the grapes, and he will come to understand that the different parts hold each other together and that the tone of one is not lesser than the one next to it (adding in the margin that he would like Jean to do a modelling course, 'He will learn to draw shapes in other ways than he does now….') But I suspect he will like the Rubens better, but in them the tones hold each other together as well. At least he is working, and I will speak to him more when I am back. I will take him to the Antiquities section of the Louvre and the School of B. Arts to show him how to look at antiquities. He should ask for permission to copy the pipe……I can then critique his work when I come back. I will try to make it easy for him to understand' and concludes by writing of his wife's art, 'The music of your painting, represented by red and green and blue-black is good overall [at this point in the letter Matisse has drawn a small diagram, within a square, identifying the juxtaposition of the colours] but the green does not work well next to the blue, nor does the red next to the black. It is normal and work will correct it. Experience, and the study of the masters, the paintings of Cezanne…..'  A letter of wonderful content relating to painting and enhanced by the two small illustrations by Matisse. Some extremely light, very minor age wear, VG  Amelie Noellie Parayre (1872-1958) Wife of Henri Matisse from 1898 until their divorce in 1939. FLAUBERT GUSTAVE: (1821-1880) French Novelist of Madame Bovary (1857), the leading exponent of literary realism in France. A fine A.L.S., Gu. Flaubert, two pages, 8vo, n.p., n.d. ('Mardi'; early 1870s), to a friend ('Mon cher ami'), in French. Flaubert announces 'Le Sexe Faible must have been taken to the censors today' and continues 'Weinschenk worries about the minister, but if you delete the word minister, the role no longer exists and the piece becomes incomprehensible. The general can be a Swiss general (Swiss - oh, very well) but minister can not be modified….you have to take it or leave it. Write your father what you think is appropriate. You know the question as well as I do. Your interest is at stake more than mine. If your father and Beauplan support us (and they can support us, since the censors depend only on them and on any one thing that they say about it) we are saved. If they don't, then not. In a last ditch effort I am writing one more time to d'Osmoy! And I will notify R. Duval to speak to his cousin Chabaud-Latour. More I cannot do. I know perfectly well that Weinschenk counts on a big financial success. Le Sexe Faible is his last challenge, and he will do anything I want. But still, if the minister is left out, good night! I am not trying to conceal that I am full of bitterness and that I am getting to the point where I have had enough, or even too much! It would probably not be bad if you made the trip to Paris. Sunday. It's worth it. As for the rest, it's up to you. I suspect your father will not answer you, an easy way to avoid difficult steps, and that Le Sexe Faible will be stopped by the censorship, but they will regret it.' A letter of excellent literary content, not least for its references to censorship which Flaubert had experienced previously when his debut novel and masterpiece Madame Bovary had resulted in a scandal when it was first serialized in 1856-57 with public prosecutors declaring it to have obscene content. Some very light, extremely minor age wear and a few small tears very neatly and professionally repaired. About VG Le Sexe Faible ('The Weaker Sex') was a light comedy originally written by the French poet and dramatist Louis Bouilhet (1822-1869) who was a close friend and mentor to Flaubert. Following Bouilhet's death Flaubert discovered Le Sexe Faible amongst his friend's papers, although it is open to debate whether the piece was a scenario or full text when discovered. Flaubert completed the play, with a sexist and politically incorrect theme, in honour of his late friend and it was scheduled to be produced in early 1873. However, the impresario Leon Carvalho favoured Flaubert's Le Candidat and that was instead chosen, although only survived for four performances before Flaubert himself withdrew it. Le Sexe Faible was again scheduled for production at the Theatre de Cluny in 1874, however shortly before the premiere Flaubert cancelled the production believing it to be unworthy of the play.

In his fantasies, it seems that Falstaff is aureoled with tenderness, like a plum pudding with a bluer flame. And in the midst of the warm intimacy of rooms where, thanks to him, the selfish kettle sings like a poet, he causes the wind which speaks of tragic misery to blow beneath the hard doors. He has spoken about the child's tears, and the eyes of death… Yes, between Andersen and Tolstoy. Doyle commences 'I remember old James Payn when I was his pupil giving me the standing rule "Never argue with a critic". I have kept it fairly well (save in psychic matters) and I do not feel galled by criticism for I always feel that if one does the very best one can Time will sort it out and what is worthy will remain & what dies should die', further adding 'Therefore I hardly know why I wrote to you save that it is an interesting point to argue how far a falling off is real or apparent & how far the fresh mind reacts as it used to do.' Doyle continues 'I was conscious at one time that [Sherlock] Holmes was strained & for some years I only wrote one story a year. I can truly say I have never written to order or allowed the money side of it to influence me at all. But I have not felt him strained in this last series of six. Five of these are done, and I will not do the sixth if I have any reason to think there is a real declension. I have my ear on the ground'. In concluding Doyle thanks his correspondent for their 'frank criticism & courteous letter' and remarks 'I should be a fool indeed if I resented what is honestly said'. A letter of good literary content and with a rare reference to Sherlock Holmes. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG   James Payn (1830-1898) English Novelist & Editor of Chambers's Journal and the Cornhill Magazine. Presuming that the date of 1926 is correct, then Doyle would have been making reference to the final six Sherlock Holmes stories he would write, each of which appeared in The Strand Magazine between October 1926 and April 1927, concluding with The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place.

BURGESS ANTHONY: (1917-1993) English Author of the dystopian satire A Clockwork Orange (1962). An unusual pair of ink signatures, 'with best wishes - Anthony Burgess (Antoine Bourgeois)', on a small 4to feint ruled page removed from a notebook, dated Monte Carlo, 24th July 1976 in his hand. Burgess has further added an original pen and ink drawing in his hand at the base of the page, the image showing an orange with a mechanical device extending from a segment of the fruit, evidently inspired by the title of Burgess's most famous work, A Clockwork Orange. An ink annotation in French to the verso indicates that the signature and drawing were made for a French journalist who had interviewed Burgess in Monte Carlo for the BBC. Rare in this form. Some very light age wear and minor creasing, about VGAnthony Burgess has offered several different clarifications as to the origin and meaning of the title A Clockwork Orange, in the preface to A Clockwork Orange: A Play with Music writing that the title was a metaphor for 'an organic entity, full of juice and sweetness and agreeable odour, being turned into a mechanism'.

A good, rare autograph manuscript signed, Jorge Luis Borges, one page, 8vo, Buenos Aires, 18th May n.y. (1927), in Spanish. The manuscript, with several corrections, is of an essay entitled Para el Centenario de Gongora and commences 'I will always be ready to think of Don Luis de Gongora every hundred years', continuing 'Gongora has risen to abstraction. The dedication to the letters, the esoteric and modest writing, the martyrdom acts of other people's misunderstanding and finesse, are symbolised in him. The witty Cordovan Luis de Argote - a man of bitterness on the lips and of youth employed in love - is now called Gongora, in the same way that two sticks tied in the middle are called a cross' and concluding 'Gongora is - I hope unfairly - the symbol of careful technicality, of the simulation of mystery, of mere adventures of syntax. That is to say, of academism that misbehaves and is scandalous. That is to say, of that melodious and perfect non-literature that I have always repudiated. I consign my hope - so often satisfied - of being wrong'. A wonderfully astute essay written in celebration of the tri-centennial of the death of Luis de Gongora. Some light overall foxing, otherwise VG Luis de Gongora (1561-1627) Spanish Poet who, alongside his lifelong rival, Francisco de Quevedo, is widely considered to be one of the most prominent Spanish poets of all time and a leading figure in Spain's Golden Age of literature. Gongora's influence on the Spanish-language avant-gardes was far reaching and Garcia Lorca's poetic group, 'The Generation of '27', are referred to as such precisely because their founding act was a celebration of Gongora's tri-centennial in that year. Para el Centenario de Gongora was originally published in Martin Fierro (No. 41, Buenos Aires, 28th May 1927) and reprinted in El idioma de los argentines the following year.
