Filippo de Pisis (Italian, 1896-1956) - 'Paris Street Scene with Eiffel Tower in the Distance', oil on canvas, signed and dated (19)31, remnants of old label verso, approx 50x40cm, framed (illustrated) NB: De Pisis's work was shown twice in the Venice Biennale, once during his lifetime, and once posthumously. De Pisis's work for the Collezione Verzorcchi in 1949-1950 is now housed in the Pinacotecha Civica of Forli. A large portion of his work is also housed in the Museo Filippo De Pisis in Ferrara CONDITION REPORT: severe horizontal cracking to the paint, due to fluctuations in temperature the paint has become dry. The verso shows dark line staining, possibly indicating the painting has been revarnished after the cracks have appeared. significant surface dirt to the recto and verso of the painting. Visible bloom to the painting at the verso, this is due to trapped moisture. It is clear the varnish has previously been removed and re-applied. Under ultra-violet light the painting fluoresces green, indicating a natural resin varnish, and purple indicating a modern synthetic varnish. no visible signs of overpaint.
