Victorian c1857 3rd (King's Own) Light Dragoons officer's Albert 2nd pattern short shako worn by Major The Hon. Horace Manners Monckton, later Lt Col. Manners Monckton, who went onto command the Regiment and retired in June 1862 after a distinguished military career which started April 1841 with the 29th Regiment of Foot (Worcestershire Regt.). The shako has a black beaver skin cover with leather dished crown, beneath is a 2 inch gilt woven decorative band of oak leaf and acorn pattern. The leather peak banded with gold thread, the shako plate in the form of a Maltese Cross with the inscription King's Own Light Dragoons and the regimental motto Nec Aspera Terrent (nor do difficulties defer), battle honours Salamanca, Vittoria, Cabool 1842, Punjab and Chillianwhallah and prancing horse over Roman numeral III to the centre surrounded by the Queen's Crown. The chin strap attached to a velvet backed leather strap secured to the shako by a pair of rose bosses, the inside of crimson cloth with leather sweat band, with red and white horse hair plume c1820 and shako lines
