Spencer House, 27 St. James Place, London, Nov. 11th 1949, lot 87, for 40 guineas, thence by family descent.N.B. We are grateful for the assistance of Van Schendel scholar Jan De Meere who has confirmed the attribution of this lot from photographs; he notes that his work may date to 1865 and relates to a larger dated composition of the same subject illustrated in his book Petrus Van Schendel, Ein leven tussen licht en donker p. 197, plate 331 CONDITION REPORT Generally good original condition overall. The paint is in good condition with a regular pattern of age craquelure. No splits to panel. Would probably benefit from a light clean which would reveal more detail overall. It has been inspected under a UV light and is showing practically no signs of overpainting apart from very minor small spots, presumably from paint chips occurring over the years

AN UNUSUAL 1821 PATTERN LIGHT CAVALRY OFFICER'S SWORD TO THE 16TH LIGHT DRAGOONS, 88.75cm sharply curved fullered blade from an earlier 1788 Pattern sword, engraved with stands of arms and 16th Lihgt Dragoons, (misspelt) to one side and The 16th Or Q's Lt D on the other, regulation three-bar steel hilt, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its engraved steel mounted leather wrapped wooden scabbard, the former stamped with the letters S.A to the middle mount and the latter leather work embossed with scrolls.

A FRENCH 2ND EMPIRE CUIRASSIER'S BREAST AND BACK-PLATE, the heavy gauge breast-plate with raised medial ridge, flared skirt and turned edges, domed brass liner retaining rivets, the inside of the skirt marked Manufre Rle de Chatellerault 1846 3T 1L No. 145, further stamped 145 to the inside of the left breast, the light weight back plate marked Manufre Rle Klingenthal 1828 3T 1L No. 3901, complete with brass mounted leather backed shoulder straps and leather waist strap.
