Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "U.S.S. Florida" Oil on masonite painting. Signed lower right. One of the most controversial and innovative ships in the U.S. Navy, the U.S.S. Florida (originally named U.S.S. Wampanoag) was a screw frigate commissioned on 17 September 1867 with Captain J.W.A. Nicholson in command. The ship contained a number of design features unprecedented in American naval construction. Her hull was unusually long and tapered much like a clipper ship's. Her machinery, developed by controversial Naval Engineer B.F. Isherwood, was unique for its geared steam engine in which slow-moving machinery was coupled to fast-moving propulsion gears. Naval officials resisted testing the vessel, delaying it for months. The screw frigate was finally given sea trials on 7 February 1868. Her speed tests were run in unusually rough weather from Barnegat Light, New Jersey to Tybee Island, Georgia. She covered the distance of 728 statute miles in 38 hours for an average sustained speed of 16.6 knots and at one point easily made 17.75 knots. Her speed astounded most observers. Immediately, career naval traditionalists condemned the vessel and its design. Yet, no U.S. ship was able to equal or surpass her speed records for over two decades! On 15 May 1869, the U.S.S. Wampanoag was renamed the U.S.S. Florida. Later in 1869, the U.S.S. Florida was judged unacceptable for use by a naval commission largely comprised of traditionalists. Overall Size: 20.75 x 21.75 in. Unframed.

Italian Communist Party Propaganda Poster, text reads: Ancora Scandali D.C. English Translation: "Another scandolous D.C. For the honesty and the justice in public life a new government, a new popular and unitary majority." Three little men similar to dwarfs dressed in red, with red hats and light blue scarves adorned with the Christian Democracy crest. The poster is a parody made by the Italian Communist Party as a critic of the Christian Democracy. The three men similar to dwarfs holding the cutlery ( a fork, a spoon, a knife) are a caricature of a vintage advertising made by "Argenteria Weller" in 1925. In the original advertising three dwarfs hold the cutlery in the same position. The Italian Communist Party in this propaganda poster is accusing the Christian Democracy "to eat" and therefore steal on the shoulders of Italians. The Italian Communist Party (Italian: Partito Comunista Italiano, PCI) was a communist political party in Italy. The PCI was founded as Communist Party of Italy on 21 January 1921 in Livorno by seceding from the Italian Socialist Party (PSI). Amadeo Bordiga and Antonio Gramsci led the split. Outlawed during the Fascist regime, the party played a major role in the Italian resistance movement. It changed its name in 1943 to PCI and became the second largest political party of Italy after World War II, attracting the support of about a third of the vote share during the 1970s. At the time, it was the largest communist party in the West. The Christian Democracy was a Christian democratic political party in Italy. The DC was founded in 1943 (in Nazi-occupied Italy) as the ideal successor of the Italian People's Party, which had the same symbol, a crossed shield (scudo crociato). A Catholic-inspired, centrist, catch-all party comprising both right- and left-leaning political factions, the DC played a dominant role in the politics of Italy for fifty years, from its inception in 1944 until its final demise in 1994 amid the Tangentopoli scandals. The party was nicknamed the White Whale (Balena bianca), due to party's huge organization and to its official color. From 1946 until 1994 the DC was the largest party in Parliament, governing in successive coalitions. It originally supported governments based on liberal-conservative political positions, before moving to centre-left coalitions. The party was succeeded by a string of smaller parties, including the Italian People's Party, the Christian Democratic Centre, the United Christian Democrats, and the still active Union of the Centre. Former Christian Democrats are also spread among other parties, including the centre-right Forza Italia and the centre-left Democratic Party. The DC was a founding member of the European People's Party in 1976. Good condition, folded, minor tears on margins and folds. Original vintage WWII propaganda poster: ARP Calling You - Air Raid Precautions - Get in touch with your Local Council. Original typographic design by one of the most renowned poster artists of the 20th century Edward McKnight Kauffer (1890-1954) with large graphic text 'ARP' in red and yellow, black and blue respectively, with lines of text in differing angles and colours. Issued by the Air Raid Precautions Department at the Home Office. Printed for Her Majesty's Stationery Office by Fosh & Cross Ltd., London. Air Raid Precautions (ARP) were organised by the national government and delivered by the local authorities. The aim was to protect civilians from the danger of air-raids. In September 1935, four years before WW2 began, British prime minister, Stanley Baldwin, published a circular entitled Air Raid Precautions (ARP) inviting local authorities to make plans to protect their people in event of a war. Such plans included building public air raid shelters. In April 1937 the government decided to create an Air Raid Wardens' Service and during the next year recruited around 200,000 volunteers. These volunteers were know as Air Raid Precaution Wardens.Their main purpose of ARP Wardens was to patrol the streets during blackout and to ensure that no light was visible. If a light was spotted, the warden would alert the person/people responsible by shouting something like "Put that light out!" or "Cover that window!". The ARP Wardens also reported the extent of bomb damage and assess the local need for help from the emergency and rescue services. They were responsible for the handing out of gas masks and pre-fabricated air-raid shelters (such as Anderson shelters, as well as Morrison shelters), and organised and staffed public air raid shelters. They used their knowledge of their local areas to help find and reunite family members who had been separated in the rush to find shelter from the bombs. McKnight Kauffer (1890 – 1954) was one of Britain’s most highly influential 20th Century Poster Artists and Graphic Designers. Beginning his professional life as a painter, Kauffer soon embraced poster art as a form of visual communication, enabling the public to view Modern Art through the display of his posters on the streets. He worked mainly in poster art, but was also active as a painter, book illustrator and theatre designer. Excellent condition. Original vintage German movie poster for the re-release of 1955 American comedy film The Seven Year Itch (Das Verflixte 7. Jahr) directed by Billy Wilder and starring Marylin Monroe and Tom Ewell. It features a great artwork showing Marylin Monoroe in a little black night dress and black stockings set against a silver background, with the text printed on the right side in red and blue bold letters. The Seven Year Itch is a 1955 American romantic comedy film based on a three-act play with the same name by George Axelrod. The film was co-written and directed by Billy Wilder, and stars Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell, reprising his Broadway role from the play. It contains one of the most notable images of the 20th century – Monroe standing on a subway grate as her white dress is blown upwards by a passing train. The titular phrase, which refers to declining interest in a monogamous relationship after seven years of marriage, has been used by psychologists. Billy Wilder, born Samuel Wilder (1906 – March 27, 2002), was an Austrian-born American filmmaker, screenwriter, producer, artist, and journalist whose career spanned more than five decades. He is regarded as one of the most brilliant and versatile filmmakers of the Hollywood Golden Age of cinema. With The Apartment, Wilder became the first person to win Academy Awards as producer, director, and screenwriter for the same film. Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson; (1926 – 1962) was an American actress, model, and singer. Famous for playing comedic "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s and was emblematic of the era's changing attitudes towards sexuality. Although she was a top-billed actress for only a decade, her films grossed $200 million (equivalent to $2 billion in 2018) by the time of her unexpected death in 1962. More than half a century later, she continues to be a major popular culture icon. Tom Ewell (born Samuel Yewell Tompkins, (1909 - 1994) was an American film, stage and television actor, and producer. His most successful and arguably most identifiable role was that of Richard Sherman in The Seven Year Itch, a role that he originated in the Broadway stage production (1952–1954) and reprised in the 1955 Hollywood film adaptation. He received a Tony Award for the play and a Golden Globe Award for the film. He appeared in several other light comedies of the 1950s, most notably The Girl Can't Help It (1956), though he preferred the stage. Very good condition, folded as issued.
