Screwed through base to affix to more modern plinth base.Footnote: The prototype for this bronze is the 1st-2nd Century Roman Apollo Sauroctonos, now in the Louvre, which in turn is based on a renowned lost original by the ancient Greek sculptor Praxiteles. The lizard may represent a form of impurity which Apollo is about to remove, although it has also been suggested that Apollo, in his role as Sun God, is rousing the animal from its winter hibernation.

Portrait of a gentleman in his study signed or inscribed right of the sitter's chair 'Clausel 1842 / Peinture encaustique lustrée' oil (possibly encaustic) on canvas 86 x 71cmFootnote: Provenance: From the collection of Hubert Faure (1919-2020), Albany, Piccadilly, London Alexandre Clausel is better known as a pioneer photographer in Troyes where he was born, though he seems to have spent his childhood in Toulouse and Palmiers. He is recorded also as a painter, particularly in his earlier years, and as having worked in the encaustic medium. He is known to have exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1842, the year of this painting.Condition report: Oil on canvas – possibly encaustic – which means wax is involved in the mixture. The canvas is unlined, the tension is slack and there are undulations across the surface. The paint layer has a network of age and impact cracks across the surface, some of which are slightly raised. There are a few localised areas of darkened overpaint around the mirror on the wall. The varnish is even, glossy and clear. There is a light layer of surface dust. There is some wear and abrasion to the gilded surface of the frame.

The canvas has good tension and is in plane. The paint layer is stable and secure. There are fine touches of overpaint covering cracks and small areas of the dresses. The varnish is slightly yellowed but even and semi-glossy. There is a light layer of surface dirt. The frame is in a good condition with a few small chips and losses to the gilding.

The frame appears to be in good condition with no obvious knocks or chips.

'The Woodman' - A Figure on a wooded roadway at sunset oil on canvas 46.5 x 70cmFootnote: Provenance: According to an inscription on the reverse bought at Mr Harman's auction (Spelmans) about 1883 for £20 According to an inscription on the reverse of the stretcher, Graham Cotman in 1941 declared the presenting painting to be by J J Cotman. The reverse of the stretcher bears labels of Messrs. W. Boswell & Son, one with a Norwich 'Tombland' address and the other a 'London Street' address.Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. The paint surface has an uneven texture with fine wrinkling in light passages loosely following the canvas weave, possibly caused by shrinkage in the support. The darker passages have a lumpy, uneven texture with some raised areas lifting away the canvas below. There are fine touches of overpaint covering cracks. In the sky the overpaint appears broader. The varnish is thicker in the dark areas of the painting. The surface has a semi-glossy finish and a layer of surface dirt. The frame is in a god condition with a few small losses to the gilding.

Lot 39

A well engineered 3 1/2 inch gauge model of a 2-6-2 LNER Class V4 tender locomotive No 3401 'Bantam Cock', the model built to the LBSC design as described in 'Mechanics 1945-46. This was based on one of Gresley's two prototypes and used for light branch line duties. The silver soldered copper boiler with fittings including steam pressure gauge, water sight glass, regulator and other usual fittings. The chassis having twin outside cylinders with 1.125 inch bores, Walschaerts valve gear, bright-work motion, axle pump and safety valves. The six-wheel tender with coal compartment and fitted hand operated water feed pump. The model finished in traditional green and black lined livery with fitted handrails and vacuum hoses with LNER transfer to tender side. Overall length 114cm.Boiler History: No boiler history available.

An exhibition standard approximate 1 inch scale model of the first steam fire engine built for New York City in 1840, to the designs of an English engineer Paul Rapsey Hodge. The engine is self propelled but steerage was by a leading horse. The model was researched and built by the late Mr Russ Titford of Essex from a water colour held by the Science Museum Picture Library. The model with cylinders fitted to the sides having connecting rods to the large rear driving wheels and finished in light blue, black and red livery.
