The statesman continues his letter by discussing the upcoming Paris Exhibition, ´the necessary committee and officials both in Paris and here were appointed about a year ago, and before I became State Secretary. A large sum of money has also been placed on two estimates for the purpose (20 or 30 thousand pounds). I think it is a pity that the Orange Free State.....did not see fit to place a sum on the estimates for the same purpose, for though from a commercial point of view there may be no great advantage in advertising a State at such Exhibitions, yet from a political point of view, States like the two Republics should take advantage of every chance of making known to the European world that they exist, & mean to continue existing´. Reitz concludes his letter by making a reference to his family, in particular one of his (thirteen) sons who is studyling law in Amsterdam and who ´has also joined Grays Inn London whether (sic) he goes every quarter to eat his dinners & (once a year) to pass examinations´. Acton states that he agrees with his correspondent and that Lord Berners deserves a biography, ´which might be very unusual and an amusing "period-piece" depending on the writer´s approach´, explaining, however, that he is unable to take on the task himself, although suggesting that Berners´ friend, Robert Heber-Percy (´who inherited his house at Faringdon, near Oxford´) should be able to suggest a worthy biographer, and further adding ´My own suggestion would be Peter Quennell, but I gather he is engaged in his own autobiography. Sir Frederick Ashton might also be able to suggest a qualified writer as Lord Berners contributed much to the ballet, even in Diaghilev´s time´. Together with a second A.L.S., Harold Acton, two pages, 8vo, Piccadilly, London, 26th November 1976, also to [Stephen] Brook, on the printed stationery of the Ritz Hotel. Acton states that he finds ´the whirl of London very fatiguing after Florence´ and regrets that he will not be able to meet Brook, further writing ´Any book about Lord Berners would involve some knowledge of his music but he has left some characteristic writings and paintings for he was extremely versatile. I fear it would not be an easy task, unless you had access to his correspondence. And I wonder if such a book could interest the average modern reader? Even I am treated as somewhat of a dodo´. BARTOK BELA: (1881-1945) Hungarian composer and pianist. A.L.S., Bela Bartok, two pages, 8vo, Berlin, 11th December 1929, to [Michel-Dimitri] Calvocoressi, in German. Bartok sends his correspondent a German version of an appendix (no longer present) that he had previously mentioned, adding that he had been through it himself and submitted some corrections, and continuing to draw Calvocoressi´s attention to a few points, ´1) “Komitat”: is a German term; the word actually means “county”, doesn’t it? Here it means “department”. I don’t think it’s good to use a German term, rather use “county” or some other English word. 2) S. 97 “Brunn” is the German name; an English name exists, but should we use the Czech name “Brno”? 3) S.98 Turoezszentmarton and Rozsa are the Hungarian place names. Should we use those, or the official Slovak names Turciansky Svatyillartin and Ruzomberok? 4) S.99 Appendix III is overblown! (This was the unfortunate idea the German editors came up with, which is quite impossible to translate into English). Instead, we should insert the new, attached, Appendix III. 5) S.113 “Pandur” or “Pandour”?? The Oxford Dictionary uses the second. 6) “Biro” original means “judge”. But “Dorfrichter” or “Dorfschulze” are used more often, meaning something like “mayor of the village”’; but a mayor is very definitely not a “judge”! Is there then an equivalent word in English? A “biro” in a village is a farmer, who over many years has come to take a lead over official affairs of the village´. Some light overall foxing and with a thin band of discoloration to one edge, GMichel-Dimitri Calvocoressi (1877-1944) French-born English music critic and musicologist of Greek descent.
