With a paper label 'This blue & white china tea service was brought by Albert Smith from China about 1858. Provenance: By descent from Albert Smith's sister Laura Eady. ** POOR CONDITION. Tea pot extensively broken and stuck back together. Saucers: four with breaks some of which repaired, two with light chips to the rim. Tea bowls: three broken and stuck back together, two with light chips to rim. Cups: three with extensive damage.

RARE. This rare series of engravings record the battles and victories the Chinese Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799). The first series of views (nos.1-16) record the many conflicts with the Zunghars between 1754-1760 and were commissioned by the Emperor Qianlong in 1765. The original scheme was ambitious and when the production of the oversized copperplates faltered, a new printer and engraver, Isidore-Stanislas Helman, took over production, producing detailed copper-engraved plates on a more manageable scale. The original series of sixteen plates proved so successful, Helman produced two further series, smaller in scope, in 1786 and 1788. All series are present here. ** Some watermarks to lower right margin, light spotting throughout, text leaf creased and soiled with lower edge torn with minor loss of engraved borders, boards with extremities worn.

Rudyard Kipling met Captain Edward Henry Bayly (1849 "“ 1904) when they were both travelling to South Africa on the SS Mexican in 1891. They became friends and met again at the naval review for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee when Bayly invited Kipling on board HMS Pelorus for the Review and manoeuvres.
