Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Young Mule Deer" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for the Baby Wildlife of the 50 States, postmarked February 14, 1984. Exploring the colorful Arizona desert on wobbly legs, the Mule Deer fawn playfully investigates a fluttering butterfly. This fawn will not wander far from the protection of its mother however, for the youngster would fall easy prey to the predators of the desert. If an enemy does attack, the mother will fiercely defend her young fawn. The doe will raise up in the air and then angrily stamp her hooves in an attempt to frighten the attacker. If this fails, the doe will try to lure the enemy away by whistling calls and retreating in a circle pattern. During the heat of the day, the doe will hide her infant in the shade of small bushes while she ventures off to feed. At dusk, she will return to her fawn to nurse the infant in the quiet peace of gathering darkness. As the fawn grows older, its dappled coat will fade to light brown . . . and later to a heavy grey coat as summer turns to winter. Young bucks born the previous spring sprout tender antlers which are covered with a velvety fur. These antlers grow quickly during the summer to crown the handsome buck for the autumn mating season. Later, the antlers will deteriorate, and they will drop. This magnificent animal is easily recognized by its large furry ears that can detect danger at long range. Bounding through the mountains and deserts of Arizona, the Mule Deer is truly one of Nature's most beautiful animals. Image Size: 11 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 19 x 20.75 in. Unframed. (B08395)

An early family photo shows me at about four years old, at the living room coffee table, already with a paint brush in hand. Creating art has never been a conscious choice or an option. Rather, it is a unique wellspring of creativity that truly defines me as a person. The process of creating art comes as naturally to me as spoken language.I was born and raised in Southern California. Fascinated by stories about Hawaii and the islands of the South Seas and the Caribbean, I often dreamed of living and working in the tropics, and at age 19, I sailed from California to Hawaii on a 30 foot sailboat. Then I hired on with the famous Windjammer Cruises. It was a dream job! I sailed through a series of tropical paradises, and in my spare time, I continued to draw and paint impressions of what I saw. It was during that period that my unique painting style began to develop. Later, I relocated to Honduras and worked on a private sailing charter boat in the Bay Islands, where I continued to record my experiences on canvas and paper. I continue working on my artistic skills and enjoy seeing the changes over the years. My deep respect for the beauty and diversity of nature, and my lifelong interest in travel to exotic locales, is evident in my painterly depictions of the verdant foliage, sparkling waters, lush colors, and the quiet scenes of everyday life in Hawaii. My colorful paintings, drawings and murals are represented in numerous public and private fine art collections throughout the World.I live on the beautiful, magical island of Maui and continue to enjoy various exotic travel venues that continue to inspire and enhance my creativity."

CONTACT USSKU#: 119297US Shipping $120 + insurance.BIOGRAPHY:Charles Archibald MacLellan was a 20th-century American painter and illustrator. His works enjoyed a wide-ranging, popular appeal in the United States, and he was probably one of the most recognizable cover illustrators of the day.Charles Archibald MacLellan, son of Charles and Augusta (Clute) McLellan, was born June 22, 1885, in Trenton, Ontario, Canada. His father, Dr. Charles McLellan was born in Scotland in 1844. He was an orphaned and subsequently brought to Canada by his uncle in 1852. Dr. McLellan received his M.D. at the University of Toronto, and practiced there until 1892 when, by way of the Grand Trunk Railway, he moved to Chicago. After graduating from high school and having completed his preparatory work, young Charles intended to enroll at the University of Chicago. However, he opted to begin formal studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago instead, where several well-known artists such as Dunn, Shrader, and Hoskins were at that time. MacLellan spent about two and a half years at the Institute before he accepted a position at an engraving house in Chicago, ultimately concluding his studies under the tutelage of the legendary Howard Pyle. Soon afterward, he leased a studio of his own, in the Auditorium Tower. While in Chicago, Charles A. MacLellan illustrated several magazine covers, designs for stained glass windows, advertisement posters for Marshall Field & Company, and a myriad of newspaper sketches for the Chicago Examiner. In 1909, "Mac," as he was referred to by his friends, relocated to a studio that was built by Howard Pyle at 1305 North Franklin Street, Wilmington, Delaware. At that time, MacLellan began painting calendars for Rand McNally & Co., establishing a highly successful illustration career that lasted through the first half of the twentieth century.MacLellan is best known by virtue of his many illustrations featured on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post. Between 1913 and 1936, MacLellan's work appeared on forty-four Saturday Evening Post covers, making him one of the most prolific Post cover illustrators of his day. MacLellan specialized in the female form, and nearly all of his cover illustrations feature a woman as the central, and often only, subject.During the early 1930s, Charles A. MacLellan feared that he would lose his eyesight and that he would be unable to continue working as an artist. Not surprisingly, he decided to travel west, in all probability, to find a new direction in life. Fortunately, he didn't lose his eyesight, and returned to Wilmington to concentrate on teaching and portrait painting.Throughout his career, MacLellan received numerous awards and accolades, including those from the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts, the Pasadena Art Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Terry Art Institute, and the Delaware Art Museum, which owns three of his oil paintings; "A Young Singer," "Tinker Bell," and "Attic Finery." The Studio Group in Wilmington owns one of his studies for a portrait, "Head of a Girl," and the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford Township, Pennsylvania, owns a commissioned landscape by MacLellan as well.Charles A. MacLellan's hobbies included gardening, golfing, and occasionally acquiring antique furniture on behalf of the Winterthur Museum in Winterthur, Delaware. In fact, in 1926, he was chairman of an exhibition presented by the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts entitled "Early American Furniture."MacLellan was also a member of the Accessions Committee at the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts from 1943 until 1958, and he taught at the Studio Group, located at Howard Pyle's old studio, from 1943 until his death in 1961.After his death, a memorial exhibition was held at 1305 North Franklin Street, from December 3 through December 17, 1961. Thirty-three works of art were displayed, including items on loan from the Delaware Art Museum, as well as items from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Caesar Grasselli, Mr. and Mrs. David Stockwell, Mr. and Mrs. Lammot du Pont Copeland, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Bissell, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Now known primarily for his marine paintings and postcard designs, he was initially famous for his panoramic paintings of battles. In 1884, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, where he studied with Gabriel Hackl and Alexander von Liezen-Mayer.His fame initially derived from his impressive battle paintings. In 1894, over the course of six months, he worked in Innsbruck, where he created a 1000 square meter (10,800 square feet) panoramic painting depicting the Battles of Bergisel (1809), in which forces led by Andreas Hofer defeated the armies of Napoleon and the Kingdom of Bavaria. It is currently on display at the Innsbrucker Riesenrundgemalde; one of only thirty surviving panoramas from that period.Another panorama from 1896 depicted the Battle of Bazeilles from the Franco-Prussian War. It was displayed at a specially constructed building in Mannheim and is now lost. He created several works for the Deutsches Museum in Munich; including a Roman aqueduct for the hydraulic engineering display, a Medieval herb garden and the flight of a zeppelin (1909). In Stuttgart, for the "Ketterer", a restaurant at a brewery, he produced a series of fourteen large paintings on the history of Swabian emigration. As a watercolorist, he produced numerous landscape paintings and maritime scenes, poster designs, and postcard motifs. He also worked as a musician and a composer. His wife, Hermine, was the eldest daughter of the actress and writer, Wilhelmine von Hillern. His son, Franz-Zeno Diemer, was a pioneering test pilot and flight engineer.
