The painting is executed in oil on a canvas support which has been lined. There are some minor undulations across the surface but the canvas tension is good and overall the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition. There is a network of age cracks across the surface which are secure. The appearance of the painting is good, the varnish is clear and glossy. There are a few localised areas of retouching which are reasonably well matched to the original although slightly matte in areas. There is a little damp/ bloom to the reverse however the front of the painting does not appear to be affected. Examined under UV light small patches of retouching fluoresce to the sky in the upper left, in the centre of the painting by the gulls and along the right edge, lower centre. Further restoration shows to the left and right of the sail of the boat on the right, and on and around the figure in the cente of the boat. Small spots of overpainting show at the base of the cliff and below the rowing boat in the lower centre. Some of the lower half of the painting is covered by a thin layer of varnish which may obscure further restoration. Please see additional condition images.
