NO RESERVE American Revolution.- Washburn (Emory) An Address Commemorative of the part taken by the Inhabitants of the Original Town of Leicester in the Events of the Revolution, original wrappers bound in (lightly soiled), p.3 with pencil ownership inscription of Harriet E. Henshaw to head, light scattered spotting, handsomely bound in modern navy morocco, gilt, marbled slipcase, 8vo, Boston, 1849.⁂ The citizens of Leicester, Massachusetts played a key role in the battle for American independence. On April 9th, 1775, the town's standing militia and company of minutemen marched to aid Lexington and Concord in the first conflict between Mass. residents and British troops. The term "minuteman" itself has its origins in Leicester. At a meeting of the Committee of Safety in 1774, Colonel William Henshaw of Leicester first suggested its use when he stated, "we must have companies of men ready to march upon a minute's notice". Rare, we cannot trace a copy at auction since 1958.

1893 (Apr. 19) 1a Postcard to Frank Finn in Maidstone, written by the Mombasa Postmaster T.E.C. Remington and signed "T.E.C.R" (as used on the 1895 provisional surcharges), the interesting message including "Am sending by this mail to the Zoo, one lemur, one monkey, one box millipedes. The mongoose I have had for two months needs go and die last night. I wont forget about the birds & lizards by next mail", light fold.

1927 (Mar. 31) Rangoon to Penang flight by Neville Vintcent, cover to "The Director-General of Posts and Telegraphs, India, New Delhi, via Penang" with India KGV 2a cancelled violet boxed "RANGOON-PENANG / FIRST AIR MAIL / APRIL 1927", Rangoon (Mar. 31) and Penang (Apr. 2) datestamps alongside, light crease, otherwise very fine and scarce. 1819 (Oct. 17) Entire letter from Frome to "Q.M Serjt Rayside, H.M 66th Regt, Saint Helena" prepaid 1/11, with light Frome handstamp, London Paid datestamp and red oval "Post Paid Ship Letter / (crown) / LONDON" (Jay 1248a, Robertson S41, only recorded in red in 1819), backstamped with the very scarce double oval datestamp (Jay 1424, only recorded 1818-19 on covers passing through London with a London Ship Letter handstamp). The letter is from a former soldier discussing money, debts and pensions. Tear at lower left edge, otherwise fine, two scarce handstamps and an unusual destination, sent shortly after the Packet Service to St. Helena had ceased. Photo on Page 220.
