Reins[?] beneath, relaid and with armorial bookplate of Lorenz Heister (1683-1758, anatomist, surgeon and botanist) to verso, following two dedication leaves repaired at lower margin, several leaves with old ink pen or pencil marginalia, some spotting and browning with light brown stain to lower blank margin throughout, lacks leaves T2 and 2S6, 18th-century calf, rebacked and corners restored, oblong folio Jacobus Theodorus, called Tabernaemontanus (1525-1590), was a physician and an early botanist and herbalist, the 'father of German botany' whose illustrated 'Neuwe Kreuterbuch' (1588) or 'Eicones Plantarum' (1590) was the result of a lifetime's plant study and medical practice. It provided unacknowledged material for John Gerarde's better-known 'Herball' (1597) and was reprinted in Germany throughout the 17th century. Backed on linen, few fold marks e stains of humid among the upper margin. Restored tear among the margins. A light blue ink stain has been covered with an insert during the restoration. The woman portrayed closely resembles a ballerina, with her silhouette perfectly accentuated by her dress, so light and refined as to become, in no time at all, the dream of each woman informed of the new fashions of the period. Note: The same size exist with the names and the addresses of the shop of Milan, Rome, Naples and Trieste.
