I.A.O.C.); 1939-1945 Star; Africa Star; War Medal. Lacquered good very fine. (4)Footnotes:I.D.S.M. London Gazette 19.6.1941.This Indian driver showed great personal courage on the 15th May 1941. During 'A' Company's attack north of the Customs House. Under heavy M.G., L.A. and Breda fire he drove his truck forward with Sgt. Rogerson to pick up two wounded men. The distance covered was about 800 yards and his truck was hit on several occasions. Pair to Major General G.Cautley, 5th European Light Cavalry, 8th Bengal Cavalry,Sutlej 1845-46, Ferozeshuhur reverse, no bar (Capt G:Cautley 8th Regt L:C:); Punjab 1848-49, two bars, Goojerat, Chilianwala (Capt.G.Cautley, 8th Bengal Cavy). Silver riband bar to the first. A couple of light contact marks, otherwise very fine. (2)Footnotes:Major General George Cautley was born at Moulsoe, Buckinghamshire on the 18th January 1809, he was the son of the Rev. Richard Cautley of Newport Pagnell.He became a Cadet in 1824, and Cornet on the 22nd September 1825 attached to the 8th Light Cavalry. He arrived in India on the 23rd February 1826. He was promoted to Lieutenant 17th May 1829. He was married on the 2nd November 1840 to Emma Octavia the 4th daughter of George Christopher of Morton House, Chiswick.He was promoted to Captain 10th July 1844 and served in the First Sikh War at Ferozeshuhur as Captain with the 8th Light Cavalry entitled to the medal. He served in the Second Sikh War at Ramnagar, Sadulapar and Chilianwala again serving as a Captain with the 8th Light Cavalry entitled to the medal with two bars. Major 16th August 1859. Brevet Lieutenant Colonel 28th Nov 1854. He transferred to the 5th European Light Cavalry in 1858. Brevet Colonel 28th November 1859.He retired on the 31st December 1861 and was made Honorary Major General on the same day. He died at Jersey Lodge, Herne Hill, Surrey on the 1st October 1881 the home of his son -in-law, and is buried at Old Chiswick Cemetery, Chiswick, London.One of his sons son Lieutenant George Lister Cautley was murdered by mutineers at Gorukpore on the 8th June 1857, aged 24. A couple of light contact marks and edge bruises otherwise very fine, possibly better. (Lot)Footnotes:John Saunders was originally from London and he volunteered for service with the 1st Madras European Forces in India in 1850. He transferred from the 94th Foot (Connaught Rangers).He was employed from the 14th September until 30th June 1853 as a Private in No1 Company and was present in the 2nd capture of Pegu 21st November 1852, the attack on Pegu on the night of 27th November, the investment of Pegu from 5th to 14th December 1852 and the 2nd investment of Pegu from 4th to 9th January 1853.After the second capture of Pegu, General Goodwin stationed a British force in the City and returned to Rangoon. The force he left was however too small.Major Hill of the Madras Fusiliers, was in command and had two companies of his own regiment, 200 of the 5th Native Infantry, some gunners plus thirty sappers. On the 27th November the Burmese took to the offensive and Major Hill and his men came under heavy attack. Reinforcements were sent for but because of this difficult terrain and stiff enemy resistance were unable to break through. As there were no sandbags, the Pagoda was fortified with barrels of Pork and Biscuits, and 6000-8000 Burmese continually bombarded and assaulted the position.Privates McClory and Kelly of the Madras Fusiliers found an old iron gun and this was brought into action. 2nd Lieutenant S.H.Jones-Parry has described it: 'It was a Bull dog looking thing with a touch hole as large as a handle of a church door. We had an excellent instructor in one Bombardier Sale, as grand an old soldier who ever wore a belt. The men who volunteered to form a gun crew were from No 10 Company and their names as far as I can remember were Liptrot, Vincent, G.Moore, Weir, Saunders, Dunsheath and Dennis Kelly'.The small force under Major Hill were able to hold off the Burmese until General Goodwin arrived with his relief force on 14th December. On 20th December the province of Pegu was annexed.Saunders having been promoted to Sergeant was subsequently present during the Indian Mutiny at the Relief of Lucknow and Lucknow. On the Muster of the 1st January 1861, he is shown as 2847 Sergeant Madras European Veterans aged 39. He died 17th September 1861 and his estate of 33 rupees 1 anna 11 pice was delivered to his wife Matilda Saunders on 11th July 1862.Sold with a copy of Red with Two Blue Stripes by Colonel B.A.H.Parritt where Saunders is mentioned, and assorted copy paperwork and research.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
