Dennis Lyall (American, B. 1946) "Sylvan Dell Riverboat" New York City. Signed lower right. Original oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Sylvan Dell Riverboat stamp issued August 22, 1996. In 1787, John Fitch built the first experimental steamboat in America, but it wasn't until the early 1800s that the first commercial steamboat was designed. Robert Fulton, an American inventor, engineer and artist, changed America's waterway transportation system with the debut of the 150-foot-long vessel he called simply "Steamboat." The boat was powered by two 15-foot-diameter side-wheel paddles, driven by a single-cylinder condensing steam engine. In August 1807, the vessel took its first trial voyage, a 150-mile run between New York City and Albany. Traveling at an average of 4.7 mph, Fulton made the trip in 32 hours, a vast improvement over the typical cargo carrying sailing sloop's four day trip. After making a few improvements, Fulton began steaming commercially in September 1807. Every fortnight, he would complete three round trips on the Hudson River, carrying passengers and light freight. In the winter of his steamboat's first year, Fulton improved his vessel, fitting guards over the paddle wheels, beautifying the passenger quarters and enlarging the hull. These modifications significantly improved the boat, and in 1808 Fulton registered it as "North River Steamboat of Clermont." The press referred to the vessel as the "Clermont." Fulton's successful enterprise led to a 150-year booming steamboat industry. The painting features the Sylvan Dell on the East River in New York. It was one of five ships owned and operated by the Harlem & N.Y. Navigation Company. Image Size: 14.5 x 12.5 in. Overall Size: 16.75 x 14.5 in. Unframed. (B15437)

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Mockingbird and Magnolia" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood commemorative cover for Balke's Birds and Flowers of the 50 States, cancelled December 10, 1985. Mockingbirds start tuning up in late January and reach their vocal peak in spring, singing almost any hour of the day or night. The light of the rising moon often provides the cue for this bird's most rapturous song. Quiet during the August molt, they return to singing form in the fall. At this time the females deliver a soft but beautiful song, usually from the seclusion of a bush. Mockingbirds were sold as cage birds in the South, a practice which has been stopped. Today, the Mocker is a familiar sight around Mississippi's parks. When perched, this bird displays its gray back and white underparts. The Magnolia of the South is the most spectacular flowering tree in this country. Always green, and shaped like a pyramind, it may grow to a height of one hundred feet, with a trunk four feet thick. The long oval leaves are leathery and glossy. At the end of almost every branch the leaves form a green background for the immense white flowers, which often expand to a width of ten or twelve in. The fragrant blossoms have six to twelve waxen petals and three sepals which look like extra petals. Magnolia trees bloom in spring and early summer, although a tree will sometimes produce a few beautiful flowers in the autumn. Image Size: 11 x 12.75 in. Overall Size: 19.25 x 21 in. Unframed. Howard Koslow (1924 - 2016) "Space Exploration - Mercury w/ Mariner 10" Signed lower right. Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the United States 29c Mercury wtih Mariner 10 stamp issued October 1, 1991. Launched in November 1973, Mariner 10 reached Mercury in March 1974, initiating a series of observations that shed new light on the smallest planet. Mariner approached Mercury on three separate occasions through March 1975, coming as close as 200 miles to the planet's surface and sending back data and photographs that show a world with amazing contrasts. Mercury, it was revealed, has an ancient surface resembling the Earth's Moon, heavily scarred by meteorite impacts. One such crater, named Caloris, is more than 500 miles across. The planet is also characterized by a feature unique to the Solar System -- long, curved scarps (cliffs) that appear to be the result of compression on the planet's crust as it cooled. But on Mercury, cool is a relative term: the planet's surface temperature on the side facing the sun is 950?F. In contrast, Mercury's tenuous atmosphere of argon, neon and helium -- a trillionth the density of Earth's atmosphere -- retains virtually no heat on the planet's night side, with a resulting temperature of -350F. Mariner 10 also revealed that Mercury has a magnetic field, similar to that of Earth yet far weaker, and that the small planet's core is likely comprised of iron. This artwork shows the mosquito-like Mariner 10 as it passes close to the surface of Mercury, beaming back its priceless information to the ever-curious men of Earth. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 19.75 x 17.75 in. Unframed. (B13252)

Lot 261

Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Checkerspot Butterfly" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 13c Checkerspot Butterfly stamp issued June 6, 1977. The family to which the Checkerspot belongs, genus Euphydryas, is found throughout the northern hemisphere, with eight species in Europe and six species in North America. There are no known tropical species. This Checkerspot is also known as the Baltimore because it carries the orange and black colors of Cecilius Calvert, Second Baron Baltimore, who is more universally known as Lord Baltimore. He was granted the colony of Maryland by King James I of England. This colony became the State of Maryland which still carries the orange and black of Lord Baltimore on its insignia. This type butterfly is widespread but individuals remain in one particular area, usually a wet meadow where its food plant, the turtle head, grows. The young larvae gather on the same plants, weaving a silken web around the tender young leaves of the turtle head. Here they remain and eat until autumn and hibernate through the winter. In spring the larvae separate and continue feeding until they become adults during May and June. The Checkerspot or Baltimore is an eastern butterfly and is found from southern Canada south to Georgia and Missouri. Scientists believe that butterflies' bright colors may dazzle predators and make it difficult to catch the butterfly. The bird or other predator probably sees some butterflies as bright flashes of light which vanish when the butterfly lights on a branch and folds its wings. Image Size: 17 x 16 in. Overall Size: 21.5 x 20.5 in. Unframed. (B05117)

Lot 262

Lyle Tayson (American, 1924 - 2014) "Butterflies" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Combination Cover for the U.S. 13c Butterflies stamp issue of June 6, 1977. Thoreau said that the study of butterflies extends the limits of being in new directions, so that "I walk in nature with a sense of greater space and freedom. It suggests, besides, that the universe is not rough-hewn, but perfect in its details." A butterfly is among the most beautiful of creatures. There's so little structure or power to produce such a flash of light and color. Their color is partly dyes and partly diffraction of light and is similar to the colors seen on a wet oily street or in a rainbow. The colors, some brilliant and some subdued, protect the butterflies by letting them blend with their background, by advertising that they taste bad, by suddenly dazzling their pursuer, or by making them resemble a larger animal the pursuer fears. Butterflies have been seen at amazing heights by airplane pilots and far out to sea where they have landed on ships to rest during migrations. Most species eat plants, some eat insects, and some cross-pollinate the many flowers they visit. Some newly-hatched bachelor butterflies swarm around a mud puddle for days before beginning their search for a mate. There are species which like to fight, attacking birds, dogs, and people, often driving them away. Butterflies and the rest of nature were classified by Carl von Linne -- Linnaeus in Latin. His name is part of the scientific name of many butterflies, indicating that he named them first, for example, the pipevine swallowtail is Papilio philenor Linnaeus. Image Size: 17 x 16 in. Overall Size: 21.5 x 20.5 in. Unframed. (B05118)

Jesus Rafael Soto (Venezuelan, 1923 - 2005) Titled: "Cuadrado y Curvas Virtuales", 1979 from Sintesis series. Signed "Soto" on a label affixed to the reverse. Numbered: (14/110) Medium: Silkscreen on Plexiglas with metal rods. Jesus Rafael Soto was born in Ciudad Bolivar and studied at the School of Visual and Applied Arts in Caracas. During this period he became acquainted with Los Disidentes, a group of artists that included Alejandro Otero and Carlos Cruz-Diez. In addition to his fellow compatriots, Soto's work was influenced by Kazimir Malevich and Piet Mondrian. The main artistic tenets evinced in Soto's works are pure abstraction, vibrations, progressions and geometric rigor. They can be seen through the use of lines and superimposed squares in his sculptures, made with paint and a series of industrial and synthetic materials. He spent much time in Europe, becoming a key member of the Group Zero movement, which included such artists as Lucio Fontana, Gunther Uecker and Yves Klein. As a result, Soto's work also incorporates modernist concepts such as light, time, movement, color manipulation and space. All of these facets place him as an important figure within the Kinetic and Op Art movements. Dimensions: 19.25 x 19.25 x 4 7/8 in. (48.9 x 48.9 x 12.4 cm)

Herb Kawainui Kane (American, 1928 - 2011) "Flowers of the Pacific - Vanda" Signed lower left. Original Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 34c Watercraft Racing stamps issued April 6, 2001. A bouquet of colorful sails billows in the breeze creating beautiful patterns of color on the water as canoes, windsurfers, sailing dinghies and cruising yachts forge through the waves. Boating has been an important part of the culture for centuries. In ancient times, Polynesians built light-weight canoes for fishing and exploratory voyages. Since then, boating has remained vital to marine industries and has become an exciting recreational activity, with watercraft races held throughout the year. This artwork portrays a detailed image of a popular racing watercraft: Canoeing, Windsurfing, Cruising Yacht, and Sailing Dinghy. Image Size: 9.75 x 15.75 in. Overall Size: 17 x 22.5 in. Unframed. Arthur Singer (New York, 1917 - 1990) "Western Meadowlark and Oregon Grape" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 20c Oregon: Western Meadowlark and Oregon Grape stamp issued on April 14, 1982. Western Meadowlark - In 1844, Audubon commented on the curious notes uttered by Western Meadowlarks along the upper Missouri River. He observed that although the species was known to members of the Lewis and Clark expedition, no one had taken the least notice of these birds since. Consequently, Audubon named the Western Meadowlark, Sturnella neglecta. Today the tag no longer fits. Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, and Wyoming have picked Meadowlarks as their state birds. The Western Meadowlark unleashes a bubbling medley of rich, flutelike phrases that is well-known from the Great Pacific Ocean. Oregon Grape - The Lewis and Clark Expedition into the Northwest Territory is credited with bringing the Oregon Grape to the East where it has been grown and appreciated as an ornamental flower ever since. The Oregon Grape's lustrous, dark green, leathery leaves, pyramidal spikes of bright yellow flowers, and light blue grape-like fruits in early summer, make it effective for use in many garden situations. By autumn the fruit develops into grape-like bunches of bright purple berries. The fruit is edible, and sometimes jelly is made from it. The Oregon Grape (or holly grape as it is also called) was used by the Indians and early pioneers as food, medicine, and drink. Image Size: 13.75 x 11.75 in. Overall Size: 19.5 x 17.5 in. Unframed. Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "German Cruiser - Admiral Hipper" Original Oil on Canvas painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Marshall Islands Battle of the Barents Sea 29c Admiral Hipper stamp issued December 31, 1992. Shortly after 7 a.m., the Admiral Hipper opened fire on the convoy and within hours had sunk the destroyers Achates and Onslow. As the German battleship Lutzow sailed into the midst of the merchantmen, two British light cruisers -- the Sheffield and Jamaica -- appeared on the horizon, fired on the Hipper and scored a direct hit. Vice Admiral Oscar Kummetz, the ships's commander, ordered his cruiser to withdraw. The Lutzow followed posthaste. Enraged by the fleet's failure, Hitler ordered it scrapped. A compromise introduced by the new Grand Admiral, Karl Donitz, ultimately saved Germany's navy. Image Size: 13.5 x 16.25 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 20.25 in. Unframed. (B14034)
