Stoppard (Tom) Travesties, early reprint, Michael McClure's copy with his ink ownership inscription and manuscript notes for two short poems to endpapers, rear endpapers torn out and loosely re-inserted, original pictorial wrappers, light creasing at joints, 8vo, 1975.⁂ The full ownership inscription reads, 'Michael McClure, Cambridge University, Oct 30 1975, Caius College, Gonville Room'. The poems written in McClure's hand seem to have been inspired by his environments in England where presumably he was on a visit; one is entitled 'November London' and the other 'All the yellow gold and coppery England underneath an autumn Cambridge Sky'. McClure (1932 - 2020) was an American poet, playwright, songwriter and novelist. He was a key member of the Beat Generation, a literary movement that explored and influenced American culture in the post-war period. McClure participated in the famous Six Gallery reading of 1955 where Allen Ginsberg read 'Howl' in public for the first time and he is the origin of the character Pat McLear in Jack Kerouac's novel Big Sur. Tolkien (J.R.R.) The Hobbit, second edition (fifth impression overall), colour frontispiece, illustrations, map endpapers, original cloth, faint marking to covers, light rubbing to extremities, but a bright and sharp example overall, 8vo, 1951.⁂ An excellent example of the important second edition, containing substantial revisions by Tolkien. When writing Lord of the Rings, Tolkien realised that Gollum's maniacal obsession with the ring, crucial to the plot of the later trilogy, was not apparent in his earlier work. He therefore made a number of changes to convey a more consistent character and included them in the new 1951 edition.

Tully (Jim) Circus Parade, first English edition, some light scattered spotting to edges as well as first and last few ff., original cloth, light fading to spine, dust-jacket, price-clipped, chip to foot of upper panel, a few short nicks with creasing to head and foot, light surface soiling, rubbing and scuffing to upper panel, 8vo, 1928.⁂ Tully's scarce second volume of autobiography based on his experiences with an American circus. The unvarnished descriptions of the hard life behind the curtain, including casual violence and sexual abuse horrified many circus-lovers (and owners) and led to the book being banned in Boston.
Tutuola (Amos) The Palm Wine Drinkard, first edition, browning to endpapers, original cloth, bumping to foot of lower cover, dust-jacket, designed by Barnett Freedman, light browning to spine, light creasing to tips of spine and corners, a near-fine example generally, 8vo, 1952.⁂ Tutuola's first book and the first African novel published in English outside of Africa. The Palm Wine Drinkard was reviewed enthusiastically by Dylan Thomas and was translated into French by Raymond Queneau.

Wallace (Edgar) The Four Just Men, first edition, first issue, half-title, folding frontispiece plate, with numbered 'solution' form on perforated stub at end, light marking and browning to endpapers, spotting to lower edge, original first state orange cloth blocked and lettered in black, minor dulling to spine, faint rubbing to extremities, but overall an excellent, sharp copy, 8vo, Tallis Press, 1905.⁂ A very good example of the author's crime novel that offered a substantial A£500 reward to one lucky reader who correctly "solved" the death of Sir Philip Ramon and sent the solution to the publishers via the form present at the back. The book was it seems reissued subsequently with a pictorial label over the reward statement on the upper cover, and with the solution rather than the form present at the end.

Fleming (Ian).- Knight (Maxwell) Gunmen's Holiday, first edition, occasional light foxing, original cloth, 8vo, 1935.⁂ Loosely inserted is a hand-painted wooden diorama of a dalmation and chicken by G.E. Studdy (signed "G.E.S."), mounted on card with calendar (for 1938) beneath and pink ribbon above, inscribed on verso by Maxwell Knight "To Joan & Dennis [Wheatley] with all good wishes from Max". The book itself is dedicated to the Wheatleys (To J. and D.W.). Charles Henry Maxwell Knight, OBE (1900-68) was supposedly the basis for the character 'M' in Ian Fleming's James Bond novels. G(eorge) E. Studdy (1878-1948): British artist who created the cheeky cartoon dog Bonzo in 1912. Bonzo's popularity prevailed throughout the 1920s and 30s and he appeared on postcards, toys, annuals and even in silent cartoon films.
