ÆŸ CONSTANTINOPLE PANORAMA: BARKER, Henry Aston. A Series of Eight Views forming a Panorama of the City of Constantinople and its Environs, taken from the Tower of Galata. etched key sheet with title as above (545 x 440mm.) and 8 **** etched plates (sheets 715 x 585mm.), loose and uncoloured, as issued, [1813].References: Atabey 60; Blackmer 76.RARE. If joined, these plates would produce a panorama four metres wide (each image is approx. 50 cm. in width) and provide a 360 degree view of the city of Constantinople.  In 1797 Robert Barker took out a patent which gave him exclusive rights to exhibit such paintings. His first exhibition was of a painting of London and for this his friends provided him with a title sufficiently striking to gain a permanent place in the English language. 'Panorama', derived from the Greek words meaning 'all' and 'view' had its first use in 1791 in the advertisements for the picture of London. Together with his son Henry Aston Barker, Robert opened a fashionable venue in Leicester Square, 'The Panorama', where examples of this new art form were exhibited to an eager public. A form of education and entertainment, the Barkers' panoramas soon became "all the rage" according to the artist John Constable. When their monopoly ended in 1801, the Barkers realised that they had to take steps to ensure their patrons were not enticed away to rival exhibitions. As a result, views from all parts of the globe began to appear at Leicester Square and, in 1801 the first foreign city to be presented at the Panorama was Constantinople. The present plates form a reproduction of the view. Indeed, they represent the only large-scale reproduction of any of the views exhibited.  Condition Report: Margins with some slight tears, slight creasing and light dust soiling, but overall in good condition. OSCAR WILDE: MONTGOMERY HYDE. H. (1907-1989). LAST LETTERS OF OSCAR WILDE TO ROBERT ROSS, 1898-1900. A very interesting and rare Wilde item, transcribed by Montgomery Hyde at a time when the full contents of these letters were almost certainly only available or circulating in just a few copies (perhaps no more than two). 8vo., (270 x 220mm), bound within brown paper wrappers, typescript title to front, tied with thin green ribbon, 60 typescript letters (ex 63), comprises: 2pp. Preparatory Note by H. Montgomery Hyde, London, October, 1949; 1pp. Abbreviations, the letters typed to single sides of 100 leaves, each letter numbered I - LXIII top centre of page, (letter nos. 37, 38, 39 are not present), numbered abbreviations to lower r.h. corners of pages, 'M.M. 64 - 90', (Max Mayerfield), and 'D. (Dulau & Co. Ltd.), 68 -130', with numerous names, references to individuals or homosexuality underlined in red ink; the first letter, '[Paris] May '98', the final letter, numbered LXIII, '(dictated), Hotel d'Alsace, Rue des Beaux Arts, Paris, Wednesday, [November 1900]', Preparatory Note by H. Montgomery Hyde: 'The following 63 letters and post-cards were the last written by Oscar Wilde to his friend and literary executor, Robert Ross. They cover the period from May, 1898 to November, 1900, thus completing the series begun by Wilde in Reading Gaol and partly published in De Profundis (1908 1.) and continued after his release in France and Italy under the later published titles of After Reading (1921) 2. and After Berneval (1922) 3. The letters were transcribed by me after copies made by Walter Ledger, the well known Wilde collector, from a type-written transcript of the originals which had previously been prepared by Stuart Mason, Wilde's biographer. 4. Ross to whom the originals were addressed, left them to Vyvyan Holland, Wilde's surviving son, and on the latter's instructions they were put up for auction, after Ross's death, in the Dulau sale rooms in London in 1929, when they were purchased by the late Mr. Gabriel Wells acting on behalf of William Andrews Clark. They are now in the Clark Memorial Library in Los Angeles, California. Extracts from this correspondence appeared in the Dulau Sales Catalogue, but the expurgation to which they had been subjected was so drastic as to render most of the personal references unintelligible. In the complete text given here the omissions are shown in red. Some of the letters have also been published in a German translation by Dr. Max Mayerfield, Oscar Wilde, Letze Briefs (1925), but here again the omissions, though less than in the Dulau Catalogue, are by no means inconsiderable . . . , 1. Edited by Robert Ross. 2. Anonymously edited by Stuart Mason. 3. Edited by More Adey. 4. The Ledger Version is now in the Robert Ross memorial Collection in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. 5. One letter, dated April 16, 1900, had been previously published in one part by Robert Ross in his Selected Prose of Oscar Wilde (1914). 6. Dulau Catalogue at pp. 16-17'. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), was an Irish poet and playwright. He was convicted of gross indecency for consensual homosexual acts in one of the first celebrity trials and imprisoned 25 May 1895-19 May 1897. Wilde left England for France on the evening of his release, and developed meningitis in 1900 whilst living in Paris: Robert Ross (1869-1918). was as an ex-art editor at the Morning Post, and his role as literary godfather was of primary importance to the Sitwells. Osbert had met Robert Ross before the First World War, and during the war years he got to know him well. Ross's bachelor rooms at 40 Half Moon Street are nostalgically recalled in 'Noble Essences' and it was through Ross that the Sitwells met amongst others, Edmund Gosse, Arnold Bennet, Siegfried Sassoon Wilfred Owen and Reginald 'Reggie' Turner. 'Reggie' was one of the few friends who remained loyal to Oscar Wilde and supported him after his release from prison. Osbert Sitwell put a comic version of his friend Reggie Turner as 'Algy Braithwaite,' into his verses 'On the Continent', 'Reggie' left England to live in Florence, concerned that some of the hostility toward Wilde might continue to be directed towards him. Oscar Wilde's correspondence to Reggie is part of the Lady Eccles Collection bequeathed to the British Library. Harford Montgomery Hyde (1907-1989) was a barrister, politician and author and a significant figure in the legalisation of homosexuality. He became a Member of Parliament in 1950 and during that decade was a vocal supporter of homosexual law reform. However, when the Wolfenden Report ('The Report of the Departmental Committee on Homosexual Offences and Prostitution') was introduced into the House of Commons in 1958, he was deselected by his party, the Ulster unionists, for supporting its implementation. *Catalogue Note: The Robert Ross Memorial Collection although bequeathed to the College it was, for many years, housed in the Bodleian Library. In 2017 the collection was repatriated and is now housed in the Library of University College, Oxford.Provenance: The Sitwell Family Library, Weston Hall.Click here for full description.Condition Report: Paper wrappers worn with light marks, upper and lower covers with creasing and numerous clean edge tears along the cover's edges and to the spine, a staple rust mark to the top centre of the first page (Preparatory Note), internally clean save some toning to the typescript pages. additional reference notes to abbreviations 'M.M' and 'D'., marked to lower r.h. of letters. iV. ÆŸ  OTTOMAN ATLAS: Raif Efendi, Mahmud. Cedid Atlas Tercumesi [A Translation of a New Atlas]. single volume, hand-coloured engraved pictorial title with the tughra of Sultan Selim III, text in Ottoman Turkish, (79pp + 1p.), 24 hand-coloured terrestrial maps, including 2 twin-hemispheres and one world, all double-page, (some additionally folded), one double-page, plain celestial chart (coloured in outline), contemporary Ottoman blind-stamped calf, folio., (548 x 365mm), Constantinople, 1218 AH (April 1803 - March 1804). Provenance: Probably given to General Lord Hely-Hutchinson of Alexandria, 2nd Earl of Donoughmore, by the Ottoman Sultan Selim III. RARE. This is the first large folio world atlas printed in the Islamic world, 'of which only 50 copies were printed' (Catalogue of the Library of Congress). The maps are based on William Faden's General Atlas (pub. 1796), a copy of which was obtained by the author when he was in London serving as private secretary to the Ottoman Ambassador. They are close to Faden's originals, but place names are transliterated into Arabic script, Christian symbols are removed, and the cartouches are without their human figures - Neptune's trident remains but not Neptune himself. They are accompanied by Mahmud Raif Efendi's geographical treatise. The atlas is one of the products of the Ottoman 'New Order' (Nizam-i Cedid), a series of reforms instituted by Sultan Selim III to match the European powers militarily and politically. Several copies were reserved for high-ranking officials and important institutions, but others were lost during the Janissary revolt of 1807/8, during which Selim was deposed and Raif was killed. Selim was killed by assassins soon after. It has been estimated that a maximum of twenty complete copies might survive in institutional or private libraries, though this figure may be revised slightly in the light of recent discoveries. How such a rare and prized book found its way into this library is uncertain. One possibly would be through General John Hely-Hutchinson (1757-1832) who was second-in-command of Abercromby's expedition to Egypt in 1801. On Abercromby's death Hely-Hutchinson assumed command and his successes at Cairo and Alexandria against the French led to him being rewarded by Sultan Selim III, who made him a Knight, First Class, of the Order of the Crescent. Another possibility is Frederick North (1766-1827), fifth Earl of Guilford, the philhellene and book collector, who travelled in the Ottoman empire and settled in Corfu. Other family members included Richard Heber (1773-1833), the bibliophile, and Reginald Heber (1783-1826), bishop of Calcutta and half-brother of Richard. Condition Report: Binding slightly rubbed, short split at head of spine. Minor damp-staining to some pages. Covers slightly worn. Please refer to additional images. Condition Report Disclaimer

CIRCLE OF ROBERT WALKER (BRITISH 1607-1658)PORTRAIT OF SIR NATHANIEL BARNARDISTON IN ARMOUROil on canvasLater inscribed with sitter's name and further inscribed 'By Van Dyck 1632' (lower left) 132 x 107cm (51¾ x 42 in.)Provenance: The Barnardiston family at Brightwell Hall until brought to Weston Hall in 1744Thence by descent at Weston Hall. Literature:Sir George Sitwell, A brief history of Weston Hall, Northamptonshire, and of the families that possessed it, London, privately printed 1927, p. 42, p. 56.Catalogue Note:This portrait depicts Sir Nathaniel Barnardiston (1588-1653), Parliamentarian politician and ecclesiastical patron, known as 'the patriot' during the English Civil War for his opposition to Charles I (Sir George Sitwell, A brief history of Weston Hall, Northamptonshire, and of the families that possessed it, London, privately printed 1927, p. 42). It came to Weston Hall, Northamptonshire, through inheritance. Barnardiston was the grandfather of Arthur Barnardiston Esq. of Brightwell Hall, Suffolk, who married Mary Jennens (d. 1788), eldest daughter of Mrs Susanna Jennens (1688-1760) of Weston Hall. An Appraisement of pictures dated May 1744 for Mary Barnardiston records two paintings of Sir Nathaniel: 'Old Sir Nathaniel Barnardiston's picture' at a value of £10, and 'Old Sir Nathaniel Barnardiston, a half piece' at £2 2s (ibid., p. 56). These paintings were probably moved from Brightwell Hall to Mary Barnardiston's London house in Bedford Row prior to being sent to Weston Hall (ibid.).Born in 1588 to parents with strong puritan views, Barnardiston was from one of the oldest and wealthiest families in Suffolk, who could trace their ancestry to the reign of Richard I. In 1618, he was knighted, and a year later, following an inheritance of additional lands, his annual income increased to over £3,500. Barnardiston controlled the appointments to four livings in the Church of England in Suffolk and Lincolnshire, and together with like-minded allies provided advowsons for eight puritan ministers. In 1624, he was appointed High Sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant of Suffolk. At the county level he supported the parliamentary cause; in April 1640, he was re-elected as Knight of the Shire for Suffolk, for the Short Parliament; Barnardiston set out for this parliament with a sense of mission, believing that failure to enact reforms would endanger the church and kingdom. In November 1640, he was re-elected to the Long Parliament, though he played only a modest role, serving on lesser committees, including one concerned with the reformation of ecclesiastical courts. At his death, he was lauded as the father of his country for having defended its rights and liberties. His friends, including Christopher Burrell, published a volume of elegies, Suffolks Tears (1653) in commemoration of his life. Barnardiston's third son, Samuel (1620-1707), was given the epithet 'Roundhead', from which the use of this name for the Parliamentarians arose, during the apprentice riots - a protestation against Charles I's implicit threat to use military force to support his government. Henrietta Maria, Charles's consort, is said to have spied Samuel standing out among the closely cropped apprentice boys and remarked: 'see what a handsome young Roundhead is there!' (. Accessed 10 August 2021).Condition Report: The canvas has been relined. There is a horizontal crease running the width of the painting, through the sitter's breast-plate, possibly cause by the canvas being folded previously. Some light scattered surface dirt and craquelure throughout. Stretcher marks visible in a raking light. The canvas is a little slack. Inspection under UV reveals scattered retouching throughout, including to the aforementioned creased area and also to the later added inscription (lower left). There is also a green cloudy masking varnish which may be hiding the extent of any further retouching.Condition Report Disclaimer
