* Chaucer (Geoffrey, c. 1343-1400). An early manuscript copy of extracts from a John Stow edition of the Works of Chaucer, [1561 or later], early 17th century, 20 leaves, written in double columns to rectos and versos in a neat but small hand on laid paper, comprising ‘Table of the Tales Conteined in this worke called The Canterbury Tales’ and ‘Eight goodly questions’ & Prologue dedication, [2 pp.]; ‘A kind of Prophessie of Sir Geoffrey Chaucers that is fulfilled almost in every Age’, title cartouche showing “1471” edition, ‘The Prolgoues of the Tales wherin the Speakers are Described’, (pp. 1-8); ‘The Knights Tale’, (incomplete, ends ‘And thus with good hope, and heart blithe’), pp. 1-8; ‘The Complaint of Venus’, ‘The Letter of Cupid’, ‘A Ballad to Kinge Henry IV’, and several other short works on ‘Good Conseile’, ‘Of the Praise of Women’, ‘The Ten Commandements of Love’, and ‘The Court of Love’, pp. 344-358, 358-366, minor marks and light marginal damp stains, facsimile of the manuscript ‘1471’ Works edition inserted at front, modern cloth, slim folio (29.5 x 18.5 cm)QTY: (1)NOTE:An interesting Chaucer manuscript curio. Though evidently using a printed or manuscript copy of Chaucer’s Works it is not clear that the layout, wording or spellings match up with any specific printed edition. John Stow’s name appears more than once in the text, indicating that the text followed does not predate his known involvement. The first Stow edition of the Chaucer’s Works appeared in 1561, but without mention of his name. However, the text of this manuscript follows this edition much more closely than the first Thomas Speight edition of 1598, with which Stow was also closely involved.
