†Rick Griffin : Grateful Dead in Egypt, pencil on tracing paper, framed, overall 57 x 72 cm. Extra Information - When Rick produced this drawing he was working on illustrations for the 'Gospel Of John' and other art with Biblical themes. He was also reading about Egypt and, coincidentally, the landmark traveling exhibition, 'Treasures Of Tutankhamen', was mounted at the Los Angeles County Museum, further stirring Rick’s interest in Egyptian art. In September 1978 the Grateful Dead played a number of concerts at the Sound & Light Theatre at the foot of the Great Pyramid and next to the Sphinx in Cairo.Rick took this opportunity to create a work of art which reflected his interest in ancient Egyptian themes and which could be combined with the then current music happenings of the Dead. The image is based upon an excavation in Egypt and the figures in the foreground were derived from photographs taken in the 1920s when archaeologist Howard Carter discovered Tutenkamen's tomb. The 'Relix' in the centre refers to the title of the popular Deadhead magazine. According to Ida Griffin this art was created for the cover of the magazine, to commemorate the three nights that the Grateful Dead played in Egypt. Playing to a largely local audience who had little or no idea who the band was, and after various technical problems, the third night saw everything come good and the band performed under the eclipse of a full moon, which made for a very memorable event. Bill Graham recalled that it was '...one of the great experiences of my life - dancing to 'Sugar Magnolia' in front of the Great Pyramid.' Please note that VAT is payable on top of the hammer price at 20% in addition to standard buyers' premium inc. VAT for this lot. Please note this has been framed back to front!
