A Palestinian Appreciation of Energy, Devotion and Loyalty in the Days of Struggle for Liberation of Mankind, The Book of Job, manuscript on 105pp, 107 vellum leaves, illuminated with numerous watercolour illustrations, rubricated capitals and vignettes with protective tissue-guards. 4to (28 x 22cm), lavishly bound in crushed morocco with precious metals, studded with carved ivory plaques, rubies, spinels and hardstone with filigree clasps, central engraved presentation plate on lower board, "This Gift Book is Presented to Colonel Albert Gedo [Guido] Bonn, Military Cross, by Simon Diskin Esquire and Family at Jerusalem in the Holy Land, Anno Domini MCMXLII". The book is entirely manuscript, i.e. completely written & illustrated by hand. There are 16 plates, and 44 illuminated capitals with vignettes, giving a total of 60 colour illustrations. Very well-preserved, clean & bright, some light wear to covers, housed in an olive-wood box. Jerusalem: Designed & Executed by Gur Aryeh & Raban, December 1942   ❧ Brigadier Albert "Bertie" Guido Bonn, CBE, MC, MICE (1889-1962), was Chief Engineer (Airfields) Middle East during World War Two. His two sons were killed in the Second World War, and evidently no expense was spared in the production of this important and breathtakingly beautiful manuscript ❧ Ze-ev Raban (1890-1970) was a leading painter, decorative artist, and industrial artist of the Bezalel school, and was one of the founders of the Israeli art world. In 1921, he participated in the historic art exhibition at the Tower of David in Jerusalem, the first exhibit of Hebrew artists in Palestine, which became the first of an annual series of such exhibits. He designed the decorative elements of such important Jerusalem buildings as the King David Hotel and the Jerusalem YMCA, and also designed a wide range of Jewish religious objects. The Colour of Magic, FIRST EDITION, SIGNED & INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, 8vo, publisher's green cloth lettered in gilt, dust-jacket with publisher's overlay, 205pp. Internally very well-preserved & bright, a few very pale marks/stains in places but otherwise appears almost unread, one small black spot on rear endpapers, gutters showing slightly at title, incredibly faint dust spots to edges of text-block, dust-jacket remarkably well-preserved & bold, incredibly light pushing/wear to spine edges/corners, binding tight & square, cloth very good, a couple of surface marks at lower edges, slight bumping around spine/corners, overall an excellent example of this scarce title, especially rare signed, Gerrards Cross: Colin Smythe, 1983    ❧ An excellent and very scarce SIGNED example of the first Discworld novel Provenance: The vendor purchased the book upon its release, having enjoyed the first two serialised episodes of The Colour of Magic on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour in 1983. She had some difficulty sourcing a copy, but eventually managed to order one directly from the publisher with assistance from her local library in Portsmouth. A receipt for this order, probably from publishers Colin Smythe, was kept as a bookmark by the vendor, hence its inclusion here. The vendor and her husband both started PGCE teaching courses at Bristol University in 1990. The vendor's husband became a science teacher at Wood Green School, Witney, Oxfordshire, and was present when Terry Pratchett visited the school to do some readings for the classes, c. 1992, which is where he got the book signed & dedicated by the author to his wife, i.e. our vendor

We were very lucky to get tickets as her audience was only 500 people! She used to live very close to my family's home in Edinburgh - about 200 metres away.'
