The subject of the boyar is based on Konstantin Makovski's lost picture executed in 1913 for the tercentenary of the Russian Empire. The subject is the central figure in Makovski's The Boyar Wedding. The Romanoff Boyar House in Moscow had recently been unrestored by the goldsmith and Faberge workmaster Fedor Ruckett.
