Shaftesbury Election. Minutes of the Examination taken before the Select Committee who were appointed to try and determine the Merits of the Petition of Hans Wintrop Mortimer, Esquire, Complaining of an undue Election and Return for the Borough of Shaston, otherwise Shaftesbury, in the County of Dorset, Printed... 1775, 154 pages , some light browning, recent boards, printed paper label, edges untrimmed, folio. Shaftesbury was a scot and lot Parliamentary Borough returning two M.P.'s, and for most of the eighteenth century the Earls of Shaftesbury and Ilchester nominated a candidate each: the two candidates being duly elected. For the election of 1774, when dissatisfaction with the Earl of Shaftesbury as Lord of the Manor had reached a peak, some Shastonian voters put up a third candidate, Hans Winthrop Mortimer, against Sir Francis Sykes and Sir Thomas Rumbold. Mortimer was defeated but he instituted proceedings against Sykes and Rumbold on charges of bribery and corruption. The Parliamentary Enquiry found in favour of Mortimer, who was seated in place of Sykes. Mortimer then began a lawsuit on twenty-six charges of bribery against the two, and was awarded £11,000 damages. (1)

According to Hyett and Bazeley, Vol. 1 p.270, after the Second Number an Appendix to No. 1 was issued, which consisted of a folding plate bearing seven views of the exterior of Gloucester Cathedral, after which publication was discontinued. The present volume contains the single-sheet announcement that Queen Charlotte had become a subscriber, dated Sept. 28, 1799. (1)

Highly important royal letters patent, dated 9th October at Westminster, in the thirty seventh [1595], in which Elizabeth grants and appoints Ralph Eure, Knight, Lord Eure, guardian or warden general of teh marches of our Kingdom of England, bordering on Scotland, that is to say, in parts of the Middlemarche and in the domain of Scotland, it further orders that Ralph is to restore and put right everything attempted and perpetrated defiance of any truce and to chastise and punish appropriately and persons doing wrong in that area, by inprisonment and forfeiture of lands, tenements, goods, cattle wherever the wrongdoers are found, to investigate all pleas and disputes relating to abductions, plunderings, pillage and any other feuds and also to hold Court Warden and Sessions in the marches, to make enquiries concerning any person breaking the aforsaid truces, or regulations made, to find information about the identities of offenders and to punish them according to their offences, that Ralph should punish in any way which seems best to him any person refusing to carry out his orders or persisting in disobedience, to enquire and seek out persons who collaborate with out enemies and to punish such traitors, to set watches and other spies, for our defence against the hostile incursions of our enemies of Scotland, to relieve our village and castle of Barwicke in Scotland, whenever they are beseiged by the Scots, to array all defenders between the ages of 16 and 60 being within the boundaries of the marches, to prepare in good time all men at arms, soldiers, horsemen and archers, to array them when equipped in thousands, hundreds and twenties, to make ready all men at arms, soliders, light horsemen, and archers to defending the marches, etc., with attached fragmented white wax Great Seal of Elizabeth, in old linen bag, accompanied by full translation of the document, together with other notes. The Eures were a very important family in the North of England, with many large estates, noted for their military exploits against the Scots, the family finally becoming extinct in 1680. (1)

St. Alcuin (735-804) a theological scholar and teacher, was born near York, attended the Cathedral school there and later became its headmaster. He wrote various treatises on arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, rhetoric, as well as poetry. He also created the Carolingian miniscule hand, a standard script which is still in use as our modern lower case cursive. (1)

Nunc secundis curis auctior longe, additionibus multis passim insertis: correctior quo[que] mendis sublatis, 2nd ed., Mainz: Johann Albin, 1603, three parts in one with eng. vign. border to general title, (spotted and somewhat soiled with old ownership name of Bloutn at upper margin), some spotting or light browning throughout, lacks folding table, ex libris Prinknash Abbey, contemp. calf with old reback, covers and title det., some wear, folio. This famous book, first published at Louvain in 1599, deals with magic in general, diabolical magic, maleficia, prophecy and divination, rules for judges, function of the confessor. (1)

Durandus (Gulielmus, Bishop of Meaux, c. 1275-1334). Rationale Divinorum Officiorum, Impressum argentine Anno dni Mccccxciii, [Strasbourg, 1493], gothic letter, printed in double-columns, 46 lines to the column, three unnumbered leaves, 260 numbered folios (I-CCLX), initials and numerous paraph marks supplied in red, occ. light dampstaining, contemp. pigskin over wooden boards, remains of brass clasps, covers peppered with worm, some soiling and minor wear, portion to head of spine missing with old repair, folio. Guillaume Durand wrote his eight-volume Rationale Divinorum following his Consecration as Bishop of Meaux. The work is a detailed guide to Catholic liturgical rites, including daily offices, the mass, feast and saints days, church buildings and decorations, together with an astronomical system for calculating the church year, and went into many editions following its first appearance in 1459. This edition not in Adams (see D1157 for a 1503 edition with the same imprint). (1)
